Steering Rack Making Noise

I think I have found my front end noise. I usually notice it when leaving my neighborhood. There is a hill with a slight left turn at the top. My truck will make a bump noise when the drivers side wheel unloads at that point. I was getting ready to change the oil today and was jacking the truck up. I decided to check the ball joints and tie rods for play. I just changed the upper control arms a few months ago. Working the wheel left and right I heard the noise I hear when leaving the neighborhood. Seems there is a little play in the end of the rack upon closer inspection.

 

Anyone else seen this?

mine went out 2 times but I didn't notice a noise outside of the truck. On both occasions I had a clunking kind of sound when I turned the steering wheel left or right while going slow like in a parking lot while parking or backing up. Someone mentioned on another thread on this forum yesterday that there is a recall on the steering rack now but I haven't heard that from my dealer. At any rate, they really seem to be a problem.

Mine is making a clunking sound also. I thought it may have been a ball joint. Upper a-arms replaced and still there. I think it is the drivers side of the rack where the rod connects to the rack itself.

That's it. That's what mine was doing. Mine was only noticeable in the steering, no outside sound that I heard though.

<p>I may need to get in touch with my service guy about that recall and see if I can get  the rack replaced.</p>
