31 MPG is this for real? 2017 6.2 Denali

Yes, definitely with the flow of traffic. In some areas troopers have been known to pull people over and tell them to keep up with the "flow" if they are going substantially slower..... I bet they were surprised by the officer's comment, lol

A better sampling is to reset the trip odometer and sample a full tank of all around driving. Highway mileage can vary greatly depending on speed, wind and the grade of the highway (amongst other things) 25 miles is too short to determine anything. Absolutely possible to get those kind of numbers or even higher from a 25 mile sample, but it does not represent an overall realistic number.

I get 15 city, average across a few tanks commuting. and 19-21 straight highway over a few tanks on vacation. Hand calculated. the cluster is off by 0.5 in my truck ish.

I did not buy my truck (2016 5.3L regular cab) for economy however my less than 11 mpg average during non aggressive city driving with lots of stop n go (most of my driving) seems a bit low as does the best of less than 22 mpg on an all highway trip at an average speed of about 65 mph with no load. The service advisor said ithis is normal for "real" mileage but I wonder now after seeing the much better mileage some of you are getting in the larger trucks with larger engines.(?).

I've been running the recommended 89 octane for a while now this time around I decided to try 91 so nice I noticed the truck was idling a little rough. With the vast majority of my driving being stop n go as usual I went from 10.6 mpg avg to 13.0 mpg and no more rough idle. Wondering if the mileage was a fluke/maybe from slightly different driving habit etc or if the higher octane can actually improve mileage but more importantly is it better for the engine?

I've been running the recommended 89 octane for a while now this time around I decided to try 91 so nice I noticed the truck was idling a little rough. With the vast majority of my driving being stop n go as usual I went from 10.6 mpg avg to 13.0 mpg and no more rough idle. Wondering if the mileage was a fluke/maybe from slightly different driving habit etc or if the higher octane can actually improve mileage but more importantly is it better for the engine?

I have the 6.2 and of course 91 is recommended but you can run on 89 the ECU will automatically adjust the timing and it definitely is rougher with 89 when I 1st bought the truck nobody told me that I ran The 1st 2 tanks with 89 as soon as I put 91 in the rough idle went away in and it drove a lot better. Needless to say this truck will never see 89 octane again while I'm driving it.

I figured this much compression/power needed 91 so I used it from new until reading 89 was recommended (which was confirmed by my service advisor) but I'm with you now on sticking with 91.

Where did you read that 89 was recommended for the 5.3? The manual recommends (for the 2017 5.3) 87 octane (minimum). I assume the 2016 5.3 is the same?

My manual also says 87 "minimum" however I read in a thread here I believe that 89 was recommended and when I mentioned it to my service advisor he said there was no benefit to the 91 I was running but 87 was too low. I do remember trying 87 once out of curiosity and it ran terrible so I never used it again but I'll run another tank or 2 of 91 to see if I am really getting the better mileage (my daughter actually noticed/mentioned the shake was gone while sitting at a stop light so I know I'm not imagining the smoother idle)

I've been running mostly mid grade (89) since i got the truck, but I never really noticed any issues with 87. The 89 seems to give it a bit more pep and slightly better MPG. We only have 3 grades here in MA. 87, 89 and 93. No 91

Incredible mileage is possible under the right conditions.

 

First week of October 2016, we had 70 mph gusts out of the west, so I did a little experiment. With my cruise set at 70, I got this between Casper and the last turn for Pathfinder reservoir.

On the way back, with the wind at my back and the cruise at 70 again, I set my record.

The other night I drove out to Bairoil for grins, had a 40 mph headwind, and the cruise set to 70. Got 18.5 I believe, not horrible bad. 

On the way back, I set the cruise to 55 since I was cutting it close on gas. It was about midnight, so no traffic. Got this gem.

Sure, these are from the DIC, so some may say these numbers are exaggerated. While that may be true, I'd put my money on the screen connected to the PCM, which monitors both the injector flow rate and hub rotational speed, over any hand calculation.

My 16 Max tow 6.2 get 25 mpg average all the time but I’m in Canada and our speed limit is 60, my mileage takes a big hit if I run 70 to 75 in the US. I had a 15 5.3 and the new 6.2 get better mileage!!

Always surprised with hwy mpg. Even with level and bigger tires. Not the big numbers seen above but still impressive. I have 5.3 IMG_2398.JPG

2016 5.3 cc   

(fuel meter 'bin size' is different on cdn trucks)

404 mile 23.2

62 mile 29.9

31 mile 36.5 (like others, it was coming out of mountains)

34817 miles 17.4  (includes towing from Port Huron to Phoenix and back at less than 10mpg)

 

Local running, not towing, I'm disappointed when a tankful doesn't average 20 or better.  (20 - 21 range is most common) 

 

I didn't save the data from the 2015 6.2.  It wasn't worse mileage but cost per mile was higher because fuel price.

Just bought a used 2017 Denali with the 6.2 earlier this week and took it from Colorado Springs CO to Ogden UT and back and got 37.0 for 25 miles and 30.6 for 50 miles between Laramie WY and Fort Collins CO and 21.7 for the last 400 miles. This was on a cold and windy day doing 75 to 80 on I-80 and dealing with Denver weekend traffic. Granted the stretch from Laramie to Ft Collins I had the cruise set at 68 and it must be a lot more down hill than I thought but by no means is it flat there are some pulls on 285. I was pretty impressed, did a lot better than my 06 Chevy crew 4x4 with the 5.3 ever did on this same run. Hand figured mileage for the entire 1253 mile trip was 20.8

    • I bought belts and pulleys for my '20 L5P at Rock Auto a couple years ago. I have used them for many years, and almost always save significant money, especially when I buy maintenance stuff ahead of time.   They carry many OEM parts, which is all I use unless an aftermarket is shown to be same/superior, or if it is an insignificant part or unavailable OEM part anywhere else. RA is usually lower priced, often by a bunch, but parts are sometimes unavailable or out of stock, and I do shop around and sometimes find better prices at other sites.   Be aware that you pay shipping, and if you buy multiple items and they are coming from different warehouses, the shipping can kill the advantage. Planning ahead is best if possible.   If you have a transmission service in the near future, check out their OEM (AC Delco ULV) fluid, usually MUCH less than anywhere else.
    • New member here, very long time occasional guest. Saw this thread, thought it would be a good time to contribute someting. It is only my experience and not a claim that everyone will have the same.   I bought my '20 3500 L5P new and have put 99.9% (literally) of it's current ~400k miles on it myself, with over 50% of that towing loads between 4k to 15k, and to me this truck has been nothing short of amazing. For the first 235k I had zero issues, and from there until 321k I replaced a NOx sensor, two failing glow plugs, and three of the notorious injector connectors. I believe this truck is in part, a testament to good luck, but also good care and following a decent maintenance schedule (I also keep meticulous records.) As a result, it looks as good as a well cared for 70k rig, up and down, inside and out.   At some point before that 321k mile mark I began to get a little spooked about the 10L1000, especially the valve body. Word of mouth about potential issues prompted me to jump on the net to sift through all the noise and determine what all the fuss was about. I routinely take long trips, coast-to-coast and points in between, so roadside breakdowns can be '...a thousand miles from nowhere' and a bit of a challenge, and though I had no issues, my guard was up and activated.   And then I stumbled across a chance to salvage some parts off a new 2025 that had been wrecked in transport. I grabbed a few wear items (alternator, pulleys, etc.) and on a whim asked what the ten speeder would cost me. It was cheap...really cheap. I knew some changes had been made in the '24+ version 10L and were supposedly not compatible, but I called service/parts at my local Chevy dealer and asked why and they didn't know. A call to a well known aftermarket transmission outfit revealed it was very likely it would be fine, but to them not 100% sure.   Because it was cheap (really cheap) and I was spooked, I took the chance. Had it installed by a local shop and it worked like a champ, shifted just like the original. At it's first service at 37k, I had the shop put in a Next Gen valve body kit, which after some initial hiccups and rough shifts, smoothed out though with somewhat firmer shifting.   All that said, I have a very serious concern about my newer transmission as just two weeks ago it suddenly began to exhibit a strong reluctance to engage forward or reverse. It was a bit past due anyway so I took it in for service. The reason it was sticking was due to 'glitter' in the fluid clogging the filter...not good folks, often indicates a converter giving out. We ended up going ahead with the new filter and fluid, first to see if it would move and shift, and then if so buy me a little time. It did, and I've driven it over a thousand miles and it is shifting smooth, no noises or slipping. Regardless, it looks like a third gearbox is in my future so I can resume taking long trips with some confidence. In the very short term, my curiosity will have me examining the fluid to check how much glitter has reappeared.   An earlier poster had alleged, in the context of 10L100 failures, that it is another example of how we seasoned citizens somehow descend into hysteria, lose control of our senses, and react irrationally after brief encounters with the idiocy of the internet infosphere. Let me say (and I have used and abused said internet since it's infancy) there is no segment of the populace that has a corner on over-reaction to digital garbage. Just as my offering of experience in this arena is purely anecdotal and should not be considered gospel or all-encompassing, I believe it is still worthwhile information to consider, along with other relevant anecdotal experiences about things like complex transmissions, especially when balanced with other sources.   So to answer the original question, yes I got high miles out of my first 10L, trouble free for 321,000. Now I really wonder how much longer it would have went. Did I 'overreact' to the internet ghouls by replacing a 'good' one with a 'bad' one? Maybe. Who knows, the thing might have taken a puke a 100 miles later. So I'll just fix it again, then move on and start thinking about all the other stuff that will eventually wear out. It still has the original brakes (they're at ~60%), original injectors/pump, turbo, water pump, etc....pretty much original everything. Knock on wood.
    • At peak temperature.  They get to cool down and warm up more, especially those with the external cooler.  I have three GMT900s and one of them has over 225K on its original transmission.  Fluid gets changed about every 36K miles, all of it.     It's not the bean counters, it was the government.  They had to meet CAFE standards and other government requirements.   To get around that, we tune them and modify them to our liking.
