Florida Looking Down a Gun Barrel

The current track predictions put hurricane Irma on a course to hit Florida this weekend. With sustained winds currently at 180 mph and gusts to 220 mph, at the eye wall, it will devastate any areas in its path.

While predictions have Irma weakening to a category 4 before landfall on Florida, there's some warmer water between Irma's current location and Florida. That could maintain or strengthen it.

This one has the potential to devastate Florida as much or more than hurricane Andrew.

The people of Florida, friends and members in the path of Irma have my best wishes for their safety.

If you chose to live there you have to deal with this.

Same as building on the coast, beach maybe high water or potential for slides.

We have to deal with dry conditions at our home leading to potential forest fires.

There are very few places you can live without some kind of potential weather disaster.

I understand but many do not have the choice as to where they live. Children come to mind. Irma is exceptionally strong and no one chose to live in her path! My thoughts and wishes for safety go out to all residents of the United States impacted by these disasters.

Scary part is people always wait until the doom. In everyday life one should always be ready to bug on a moments notice.

Yes I totally agree, knowing full well I'm marginally ready for a storm that isn't going to hit me. Completely not prepared considering I have 2 other people here that decided to evac from the coast. Oh well. Life goes on.

I suppose that depends on where you live and the probability of a need to bug out. The Gulf Coast and southeast coast people are at risk regularly. They should be ready during this time of year. Hell, if I lived there, I'd have a bed tank and an oversize fuel tank and fill it this time of year. I'd probably not acquire as much stuff either. Other places where there are fires and bad things happen regularly, same thing.

My best wishes and thoughts are with everyone here who lives in Irma's path. Stay safe everyone!

Keep in mind, it's no different than those that live in tornado alley, or live in an earthquake zone; you get use to it and know how to deal with it. What the media spins up isn't nearly as bad as it is...most of those folks aren't nuts, as the media would have you believe.

There are a lot of highrise buildings on Southbeach in Miami, but the majority of the folks that call it home live at sea level. Not only is there not a choice where they live, they don’t have the resources to relocate to another part of the country. The cost of living in the Southeast US is relative to the rest of the country, until you don’t live in the Southeast anymore. The gov can add Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas’ to Texas. Hurricane season doesn’t officially begin until Nov, this is just pre-season.

I've never seen a hurricane stretch the entire length of Florida. You should be more than marginally ready, you're going to be hit.

When I mean hit I mean something damaging. It'll probably be a cat 3 when it reaches Orlando. 2004 season wasn't bad and we got hit by 3. If I remember right one came back and hit us again so hit 4 times. My area doesn't flood and this isn't truck country so I've yet to see diesel run out. Used to be you had to worry about the gas station having power but I think after 2004 season any station over 8 pumps has to have a generator. Our summer thunder storms have been more violent than the last few storms to come out way. It could prove me wrong, I'll be fine. I know where to get what I need if it comes to that. If it truly is the end all like the media says I'll just reclaim stuff from the looters.

*edit*

Now that I remember it I'll be on the bad side of a hurricane so that should make it interesting. Also I don't think Irma is the largest in diameter either. Hard to tell since multiple sites use different measurements. One will use total diameter another will use hurricane force winds diameter, eye diameter. I'm not denying that it's a big powerful storm but if it indeed does come up the tip it'll be slowed considerably by the time it gets to me.
