I would like to add the buttons to the overhead console and am trying to square away the parts needed.

Looking at online schematics I have found the following parts. Has anyone tried this yet? I did this with an older Malibu a couple of years ago, it's basically finding a hot wire and tapping into it, fairly simple if you have the right pieces.

I'm guessing you need the transmitter which kind of sucks because it lists for around $100. the other 2 parts are pretty cheap.

Any tips or pointers?

Save your money man, the openers that come from the garage door company work much better....

Never had a problem with the homelink units in any GM vehicle for years now. They have all worked and have good reception.

I've never had a problem with the Homelink system either. It's convenient versus having a separate opener.

I will agree that doing this mod is probably more of a PITA than is needed for this feature though.

I have a 500' driveway, my Silverado w/ homelink will open the door about 200' from the house, my Malibu has the opener from the manufacturer and that sucker will work all the way at the end of the drive way. I guess my point to the OP is what are you gaining for the $$ it's not gonna perform better than the free one you've already got... I kinda like having the clean look in the cab but, I wouldn't spend $$ to have it, my truck just happened to come with it.

500' driveway here as well. My Chamberlin will open my garage door coming down the street. No big deal for me to have it on the visor. Can do it with my phone, but that's more hassle.

This was a feature that I did not care about but my Sierra just happen to come with. And I will say I really like it now. I can hit the button way down my street and it opens. Works great!

I'm at a loss. What does the length of your driveway have to do with opening your garage door? My driveway is about 50 ft.. My street is about 200 yards long. My truck's built-in will open the garage door from about halfway down the street, if the POS Chamberlain opener motherboard isn't screwed up. All that would seem to matter is the door opens far enough away that its open when you arrive. How fast are you coming up your driveway?

I drive about 15-20 mph on my street. Slower as I get to my house as there are often children playing in the cul de sac island in front of my house.

My point to the OP was just that I have the homelink and in my opinion it's not all that impressive/doesn't perform any better than the free one that you get with your opener.

Agreed. And for all practical purposes, it doesn't need to.

I initially thought it’d be cheaper than it is. The last time I did this it was maybe $50 for the whole deal.

It makes a difference when you have more cars than available remotes, those remotes aren’t cheap these days.

Thanks for the info for those that helped.

For those who park outside of their garage, think about the safety feature. Someone just has to pry your truck door open and then press the highly visible garage door opener and they have instant access to your garage. No thanks. I prefer to keep the factory opener and hide it somewhere in the truck.

I’ve found that if I am sitting in my driveway, in front of the garage door, it works when it wants to. If I reverse and move back and forth at distances (all within 5-10’) it varies.

I used to have a key fob opener and think I might go back to that. It stays with the keys all the time and no chance of someone busting windows and opening the garage.
