IPhone 8 & wireless charging pad

I'm not looking to "blame" either Apple or GM for this problem, what I am looking for is a solution to the problem.  Since we now know that the 2018 GM charging pad works with the iPhone 8, I have asked my local dealership to look into replacing my charging pad and/or just the charging block with the 2018 version.  If the newer charging block fits into the 2015-2017 location, then the problem should be solved.  If anyone has information on this please pass it along.  When I hear back from the dealership, I will post that information here.  Thanks.

OM's prior to 2016 indicate the wireless charge both.

Tis is the is the wording from the 2016 sierra manual:

"The vehicle may have wireless
charging on top of the center
console. See Center Console
Storage 0 117. The system
wirelessly charges one PMA or Qi
compatible mobile device."

And in 2018 sierra manual they add info about capacity:

"The vehicle may have wireless
charging on top of the center
console. See Center Console
Storage 0 122. The system
operates at 145 kHz and wirelessly
charges one PMA or Qi compatible
mobile device. The power output of
the system is capable of charging at
a rate up to 1 amp (5W), as
requested by the compatible mobile
device. See Radio Frequency
Statement 0 4"

For those iterested, this Wiki article has some info about the competing inductive charging standards and the introductions to market and updates to the standard.

Seems like it's still a moving target.

I am at my local dealership right now and I tested a 2018 model with my new iPhone X and it started charging just fine.  Now talking to the parts person to get a part number for it.

So here is the part number from the parts counter.  13507652

Now, to note, he told me that this states for the 2018 model year and does not list any previous years.  He said that typically means that it will not work in the previous model years.  I am going to reach out to a technician on Monday and see what they can tell me.

IT IS THE QI charging in the 17 and under that isn't working ... According to apple website the 18 will work and I personally verified this- my 17 works with iPhone 7 in a Mophie case and not my iPhone 10... HOWEVER MY buddy has an 18 Z71 and my iPhone 10 charging fine.

While this is cool, I have this feeling my new iphone battery is going to get fried over the course of a year.

My guess is it is the shield to “turn off” charging.  Your battery should be protected by the circuitry in your iPhone.

So, does anyone know what that piece actually does?  Does it act as a regulator or something?

I’m thinking it may be some type of switch/safety mechanism to keep the charger from turning on when random metal objects (keys, etc) are placed on the console.
