Harsh Ride 2017 Sierra SLT

Anyone else have a 2017 Sierra with a severe harsh ride. I mean bang when you hit expansion joints and then another jar when the rear wheels hit. I have had it back and replaced all tires twice. The dealer has admitted it is a harsh ride. Claims the frame was beefed up to raise the roll over rate and now a rough ride (harsh) is considered normal.

I traded an exact build sheet 2104 for this 2017 and it rides completely different.

The dealer has been great but has no solutions.

I am exhausted riding in this truck and feel it is unsafe. The factory, gm customer care was as useful as hemorrhoids and just about as pleasant. They were unresponsive and then just consider the ride normal as compared with other vehicles. Seems funny since I have a friend that also just bought a 2017 X71 that is much smoother.

I have a couple of choices.

1) downsize to 17" wheels from the 20"

2) hope for another hurricane

3) file a lemon law case

Anybody have any ideas?

This would be the wrong section for your rant.

4) Downgrade to 17” wheels with beefier sidewalls. Upgrade your shocks and suspension.

5) Don’t buy another truck with leaf springs...they do add more clunk to the rear and.

Get rid of the 20" rims, they have no place on a truck.

Biggest rim on a truck should be 18", but 17" would be an even better idea.

Oh Boy, I just purchased a 2017 Sierra 4X4 club cab exactly like my 2014 I traded. I got the same 20" wheels, the same suspension according to the build sheet. I finally got rid of most of the vibration in the seat at 65 to 80 mph with the help of Michelin. They also helped to a degree addressing the absolute rediculiuos hard ride. They recommended Michelin Premier LTX which has a softer rubber compound. It did help as far as the ride now on a smooth road at 80mph is as smooth as silk. Michelin has the absolute best customer service.

Now, the harsh ride when hitting bumps is a real issue. The dealer feels my pain and is working with me trying to find a solution. This is a $52000.00 truck that hits bumps and makes your spine hurt. I hate the truck because of that. I have managed to put almost 4000 miles on it so far but enjoy very few of the miles. I even replaced the original tires with Michelins to make it exactly the same as the last. That $1000.00 was a waste but it was after Michelin honored their 30 day ride guarantee and suggested another tire that I felt the money was well spent as far as the vibration and a bit of the harsh ride. This truck has an issue with the suspension and is much stiffer than my 2014. Nobody warned me that I would encounter such a crappy ride. Of course not, its gotta be better than a 3 year old truck you would have to think.

After hitting an expansion joint the rear axle has a bump-bump with the second bump solid as a rock. My 2014 was such a pleasure to drive now I understand why they gave me such a great trade in.

According to the GM field rep, the frame has been stiffened up to increase the roll over rating which has caused the additional harsh ride. Try to get that same guy to show up at the dealership. He can hide behind his email and the phone easier and not have to communicate with the end user. He is a coward. Man, do test drive adequately before buying and don't assume like I did that the ride would be like your identical truck 3 years older. The biggest mistake I have made in a long time.

I am going to either downsize the tires , install a set of aftermarket Sulastic's , or trade this terrible riding truck. It really sucks to have convinced my company to buy GMC pick-ups and now have one I can hardly drive.

Any suggestions out there? I called GM customer service and what a waste of time. The lady said she had no technical knowledge and therefore she was absolutely no help. She actually blew me off and said so sorry, truck is working as engineered. Well they need some new engineers or at least send one out to ride in this beauty.

I couldn't even get GM to send a field rep to ride with me. I am really upset about this one. Nothing but GM cars in the family and this will probably be the last.... Such a shame ..

Maybe some GM representative will read this and relay the issue to the Corporate offices since customer service is a joke.

By the way Chevy roofer, where is the appropiate place for my rant please? I am new to these forums but not new to owning GM vehicles. This one is an absolute nightmare!

Come on guys. The issue is the Rancho shocks. Complete garbage. Get a real set of shocks and all will be fine. 5100's are a good start.

The truck is equpped with the original shocks which are not Rancho's. the GM part number is 84043233 which means nothing to me as far as what they are. I am hoping the 5100's will actually affect the rapid jolt that is felt from the rear axle sometimes on minor road bumps or imperfections. I have a 2102 Yukon also that had 20" wheels but doesn't have this same Bump/bump that tranmits directly to my butt and up my back.

Considering the OP doesn't even have them, but the Rancho's are far from garbage... Thanks for the irrelevant spamming though! I am going to go out on a limb and guess you are a Bilstein sales rep???

OP, how many topics are you going to start on this?

How does it ride with weight in the back?   Sounds like defective shocks regardless of manufacturer They should do what they are made for , not all shocks have the tell tale sign of oil leaking ,

Trucks Have come along way in ride quality,  but Trucks and comfort should not be in the same sentence   up until the year 2000s you expected to be uncomfortable , now with the crew cabs air tight cabins , now they actually  can be used as the " family sedan "  Good luck to the OP , But my 20s ride great with stock tires and I Notice with 200LB + loads  in the back its really smooth, I haven't overloaded it yet but thats  inevitable , its going to happen

I have a 2017 Max Tow with the 20” wheels. I expect it to ride hard so I put 4 50 lb. bags of sand in bed. Makes a big difference.

How’s the gas mileage since you put in the bags? I know nobody cares about gas mileage because it’s a truck but just curious.
