Leaking axle

While tightening my u-bolts (which were only torqued to 50 pounds), I noticed some minor leakage going on at the driver side rear wheel. I assume the seal has failed. Doesn't look like anything is dripping but I do notice that it is leaking.

My truck only has 24k miles on it. I'm going to have the dealer check the rear axle run-out while it's there. I'd imagine a failed seal at 24k miles has to be caused by something.... Right?

Might be just a bad seal.

Might be a machining problem on shaft or housing.

Might be a wheel bearing.

Might be a.....

Tell them you think you might have a leak and let them figure it out.

How long did it take the dealer to repair?

With the GMT900s it's 1.5 hours under warranty and 2.7 hours standard.

What do you mean by that? Are you saying they take longer when it's not under warranty so they can charge you more?

I think the dealership would look at it differently; that they're not getting paid enough from GM to make repairs under warranty.

My friend was a Ford dealer tech for several years, and finally moved on due to one main thing: WARRANTY REPAIRS. Ford is even worse than GM when it comes to allotting enough time to properly perform a warranty job. It's criminal how they screw the already low paid techs.

OP- At 16k I had my RR axle seal go.  Gear oil on the tire, wheel, all over the frigging place.  Dealer replaced the axle seal in a few hours, back in business.  Since then I have noticed a weeping type leak if you crawl up under the truck.  I had the dealer look at it 3 times.  I gave up, they kept jerking me around.  I was told not to worry because I had a 100k power-train warranty.  I de-grease the backing plates and all, 5-10k miles later the RR is wet looking.  I've lived with it and it has not gotten any worse.  I would have the dealer fix it, but heads up on my ordeal.
