Getting new tires...keep old or dispose

Recommended Posts

My 2015 Silverado has ~40K miles. I'm looking to replace the stock tires with Goodyear Duratracs. The stock tires have 7/32" left on them. Should I keep the stock tires for this summer or just dispose of them?

I would personally wait and keep them for the summer time. You can get another 5-10k out of those tires, they just get a little louder towards the end of their life. Then new tires for winter to stay safe.

Living in the Midwest as well I run on All Season tires to 5/32 in for winter and 3/32 summer. If you feel that is too little tread then you might consider snow tires such as Blizzak. Then you could run your current tires maybe two more seasons with ease in summer only use. Then again if you just want new tires....

That area between 7/32 and 3/32 is the most fuel efficient time of a tires life. There's a thought.

You know anyone disadvantaged who could benefit from your generosity if you decide to get new ones? The tire shop will resell ones with that much tread.

I would get rid of the old tires by selling them cheap. I have found it easier to sell 4 matching tires in decent shape for $100 than disposing them!    It is a pain to store tires and costly to switch them on and off.  The money saved can go to your next new set!

I agree with Donstar. They charge $80 to $100 here to mount and balance 4 tires. Then you have to do it again the next fall. Better to sell them and get it over with.

would you be purchasing new rims for the new tires? more cost.

would you be switching the rubber back and forth each spring and fall? more cost.

I would second what Donstar said. If you determine that your existing tires are done, just get them out of your way. if they have any life left, someone on craigslist will pay you and you wont have to eat the recycling fee.

Keep 'em leave 'em out in the yard when it rains during the summer so they can fill with water. You'll have a great crop of mosquitos

Thanks for all the input. I'll check into my local pricing for mounting and balancing. If it's going to run about $100 it's likely not worth it. Not to mention my time waiting at the tire shop. Plus I'm looking forward to new tires. I've always been luke warm about the stock Goodyear Wanglers.  Not bad, but not great. They sucked the most in wet.

Smoke em off or sell them.

Im glad I don’t have my summer/winter wheels anymore. Tired of them taking up space in the garage.

Get pregnant, plan on quadruplets.  Tire swing for each (won’t take up garage space).

ok, that was pointless.   Sorry.  I agree with donstar too.

I have too much crap lying around, so I vote get rid of them.

I'm not a mudder, but we get plenty of snow.  And I just run all season tires and get along fine.

If the new tires are of a completely different type of tread (chances are, if you're going to Duratracs), run the old tires clear down and dispose of them.  If you are getting new tires with the same type of tread, especially if your truck is 4WD (and you want a similar tread pattern on all 4 corners), in that case, I replace them a little sooner and always keep a couple of the old tires (select the best 2) in the shed for 'road hazard' type of emergencies, such as when Tire Rack tells you the new tires you want are on backorder for 6 weeks.  Having a couple of correct full-sized tires in 'reserve' has come in handy a few times over the last 25 years when a sharp rock, pointy stick, long nail, or piece of mostly buried rebar has gone way out of it's way to find the sidewall on one of my tires.
