    Hi everyone, new to the site but not new to GM. I have owned a few GMs over the years. Recently I have decided I need to upgrade and purchase a new truck, you know with a growing family and the need for space and practicality. I've recently been browsing all the car sites and such looking for a 2016 crew cab 4x4 1500 with a 3.42 rear. I guess I'm hear wanting some feed back pros cons and most importantly price. I completely understand you get what you pay for and I am GM to the core. What say you?

Welcome to this forum!  Good luck with your search!  Why restrict your search to a '16?  If you're looking for used then '14 - '18 are all similar.  If you are hoping for a near new in good condition, then I'd recommend buying new.  There are usually great incentives which put the price of new very close to used!

The Projector Head lights in the 14/15 sucked.  The big thing is run any of them up over 75MPH and make sure there is no vibrations.  Few trucks have this issue and it's hard to correct.

 

Of course if you read this forum they make it seem like they all do it... But the reality it's a small % of trucks of course Ford and Ram have similar stories in their forums,,

 

I have had a 2014 GMC Sierra Double cab and a 2016 Double Cab never any major issues.

The 16-18s are way better than the 14-15s for a number of reasons, mostly due to the facelift, lighting, and technology (if buying SLT-Denali trims).

A gently used truck will command a high price tag. You may be better off shopping for brand new. If you are really hoping to save money you are going to have to find one that's 3+ years old with 50,000+ miles

 

Get an out the door price quote on the new truck you like and compare that to used vehicles before you decide which way you want to go.

I would have a far easier time listing the similarities than the differences between '14-'18 "SLT Denali trims".  I bet the average truck buyer would also need help to spot the differences!  I am a GMC truck fan yet I rely heavily on the window sticker to confirm the year!

I was in the same situation Jcollins82, only I wanted the 6.5' bed as well. After a lot of searching and pricing out options I decided it was better to spend roughly $5,000 on a brand new 2018 rather than the 2015-2017's I was looking at, just make sure the dealer gives you all the rebates that are out there. Better features, 1-3 years newer with 30-40,000 miles less. With all the GM incentives the dealers had it didn't make sense for me to go used, you might find the same thing. If you don't mind the 5.5' bed on the crew cab there are a lot out there, there weren't a lot of 6.5' bed in my area but they do exist if you search hard enough. Hope that helps you some, good luck!

For exterior, all it takes is a glance at the headlights/fog lamps and you'd know in an instant it's a 2016+  

 

For the interior, it's easy too.  Android Auto/CarPlay icon in screen = 2016+

wifi = 2016+

wireless phone charger if bucket seats 2016+

yes, its easy to tell the 16+ with the LED lighting on the front. But from the sides and rear, I can't tell the difference either (unless the new tail-lights are lit up). The small changes to the lights and grill don't affect the drive-ability, hence they are nearly the same from a mechanical standpoint. If the OP wants the latest gadgets, he should definitely buy new then.

 

and I wouldn't know a wireless charging pad or carplay icon if I saw one.

Yes but the other 29,996 parts are similar or identical.  Some features must overlap as I have wifi in my '15.  I'm just playing as I do appreciate there are some differences between years.

Look at Dennis Dillon and Laura Buick GMC. I was like you looking at used. I could get a new truck for a few thousand more than used. Thats what I did! Found a 2018 SLT Premium Plus with 6.2 for 25% off of sticker. Most people are getting at least 20% off MSRP on a new truck. 

 

FYI on GM Financial. You get an extra $1000 off but must keep loan for 6 months or 181 days. Interest rate is 6% even with excellent credit so it ends up being a wash with interest or more $$$ if you don't refinance after 6 months. You CAN make larger payments, no prepayment penalty, thats what i plan to do to save a few $$$ in interest until I refinance.

 

I would rather by end of a generation because hopefully most of bugs are worked out and you get the refreshed features aka Lane keep assist, forward automatic braking, apple and android car play, etc vs buying new generation.

If looking for what to look at before buying a “new” to you truck read though this post. I tried to list the most common problems IMO with these trucks. I also agree with the above posts about if you can afford to go new it’s the way to go but I understand not everyone can.

One thing I miss on the previous years is the warranty. 

 

5yr / 100k miles 2007 - 2015

 

5yr / 60k miles 2016+

 

Duramax HD 2500 / 3500 retain the 5yr / 100k miles. 

 

All years have the 3yr / 36k mile bumper to bumper warranty.

Are you sure about the 6 month thing? If you pay off immediately (to take advantage of the deal) the dealer doesn't get their spiff. For that reason many dealers like to "suggest" that you keep the loan for a more extended period.

Yes, I talked this over with the dealer. They get their $$$ if you hold loan for 180 days. They told me I can refinance on the 181st day and all is well. They also said if I refinance before the 180 days they do not get their $$$ and I will be put on a no sell list. Since the dealer I purchased from has some of the lowest prices in the nation, I'll hold loan for 6 months so I can purchase again ;-)
