Question on New 18 Silverado Negotiation

You're right. NE area dealers are tough. The economy is especially good in the area, so they don't care if you buy it or not. The worst part about buying my 2017 was my trade value. I bought last year when GM offered 17% below sticker. 2017 LT DC midnight edition stickered at $51, I paid like $42.3 (before trade).. The GM discount took all other incentives off the table including my supplier discount. The fun began when they offered me $3k for my 2008 Tacoma which had a trade value of between $8-9K according to KBB/NADA.. I got up out of my seat 3 times during negotiations. I finally got $8k , but the whole experience sucked and I told them that as we closed the deal.  Why put us both through the BS, when in the end I got the $8k I wanted. I was so aggravated towards the end of negotiation that I also demanded $700 running boards. I was seriously going to walk if they didn't give them to me. That was Diamond Chevrolet in Auburn. To be fair, I will say that the service dept is completely different than the sales dept. I've been happy with the service after the sale.

That story sounds typical of the area.  I've purchased many vehicles over the years and typically know the product and prices going in, but it can still be tough.  On my 2016 I had them give me $500 Linex free after all other negotiations were done, so good job on running boards and sticking to your guns.

Oh, and they put customers through the BS because they want you to cave and want to get the hell out of there and succumb to the lower trade.  Statistically, they probably get most customers not wanting to deal with the stress or not knowing any better and do what the dealer wants.  I also love the tactic of holding the keys of the trade while they're wearing you down.

Laura GMC and Laura Chevrolet out of IL.

Mentioned a lot on this site for the favorable deals on New trucks, average on trade in though.

Market conditions. The old "whatever the traffic will bear" prevails.

The negotiating part of the car buying process is the most stressful part of the experience, imo.  It bothers me that if I don't choose to play the "game" I'd be expected to pay thousands more.  In my past two purchases I initially told the salesmen to give me their best deal.  I knew they wouldn't do this, but in both situations I would have paid around $4k more if I accepted their "best deal".   I seldom feel like bragging about the deal when leaving a car lot and usually feel upset that they tried so hard to overcharge me. The dealer will not sell you the vehicle unless they have made a profit.  All you can do is try to minimize their profit and hope that you get as close as possible to their bottom line!

I have no way to know this for sure, but I don't think Laura likes trade ins.  They have a million new cars there and I don't know how many people go there looking for used.  Everyone I've ever known that has gone to Laura either sold their car on their own or traded it into CarMax or CarSense and got a decent trade value that way, thrn flew out to Laura to buy.

Exactly...

When they offered me $3k for my truck that had a $8-9K trade value, around $10K private party/retail, it really pissed me off. I was insulted that they thought I was stupid or naive enough to accept $3k . A RAM dealer offered me $8k right off the bat.

I honestly love buying new vehicles haha.  I like the search and the negotiations aspect of it.  When I buy I am a 30% from sticker type person and do not settle for much less unless it's a must have.  If you think dealers play games it may be hard but I just play a harder game with them.  If one doesn't deal just buy a truck from somewhere else even if you have to travel to get it.  Limiting yourself by distance from home is why people usually overpay.. it is what it is.

I know I will start to play my game towards the end of the 2019 models of the HD trucks and try and get a second one like my 2017.  That should last me for the next 20 years haha.

I visited 6-7 Chevy dealerships between MA and NH when looking for my Silverado, and ended up buying from Quirk Chevrolet in Manchester, NH.  I was close at a couple of dealerships, but ended up walking away for various reasons.  In the end I think I got about 18% off MSRP before trade, which was about the best I had been able to do.  Nothing near the 20%+ that I was hoping for based on these forums, but it was better than some of the prices TrueCar and other sources said were typical of the area.  Next time I might seriously consider flying out to Laura GMC.

I like the negotiating part of the process too, it's a little stressful but fun.  Everyone has a different strategy, but try to negotiate the deal without the trade-in at first.  Get their best offer then negotiate the trade-in.

Im in the Northeast as well.  Sold my 08 Sierra privately and flew out to Laura in June.  Deals were crazy.  Got my 18 Sierra CC SLT for $32.5 after GM Card points No local dealer could come close.  They were off by $7k-8k.

I agree with everything in this post.  I've always negotiated new car first, then and only then bring trade into the equation.  In our area, 18% is pretty decent.  In 2016 I got 20% from dealer down the street.  I may call Laura Chevrolet and just hear what they have to say over the phone on a selected vehicle from their lot.  If it's a couple grand difference and I have to go through the hassle of trading elsewhere, flying down, etc...it's not worth it to me, but as another poster stated, and 8K difference is very significant!

I feel exactly the same way.

I just bought my first new truck ever. 18 Sierra CCSB SLT, 6.2, 4x4, Z71, buckets. MSRP was 56k, ended up at 42k, so 25% off. I was really happy. 6.2 are kinda hard to come by. They offered me $500 trade for my 05 acura TL hahaha. I said no thanks and sold it for 2k cash the next day.

Couldn't get them to throw in a dang bedliner though. Told them "it should be illegal to sell a truck in texas without a spray in liner" lol.

They did throw in window tint though.

Yes, it sucks. I wastes an entire vacation day buying my 2018. This one reason I hardly ever buy a new vehicle. Takes all dam day. Got there at 9 am finally was driving my new truck home at 3:30 pm
