If you can use a brick paver or something similar to bring your RPMs up just a little and listen to see if the rate increases that will help diagnose it.

Perhaps the audio of the video doesn’t accurately reflect what you’re hearing there in person. A blinker sounds very different to me than an exhaust leak.

The vacuum pump exhausts the air it removes from the booster into the crankcase. It sounds very similar to an exhaust leak and tends to decrease or go away once it’s warmed up. A mixture of no longer drawing air out of the booster/expelling air into the crankcase and that the engine oil has had a chance to properly lubricate the moving parts probably contributes to the quieter operation.

If you remove the engine cover under the truck (6 hex bolts, very easy with a socket wrench) you may be able to pinpoint the sound. The vacuum pump is located on the bottom corner of the engine closest to the driver’s tire, right next to the steering shaft. It’s very easy to see it with that cover off if you look from the front of the truck towards the back.

So this morning I started it. The sound started about 10 seconds into idle.   It sounds like it increases with rpms but the engine drowns out the noise at 1200 rpms. 

 

I'm thinking it's got to be something related to the exhaust.

If it really sounds like an exhaust leak on the driver’s side, my money is on the vacuum pump being the culprit. I thought I had a driver’s side manifold leak. I removed my vacuum pump and replaced it with an electric one. When I spindle the pump off of the vehicle, it replicates the sound I was hearing. My truck no longer sounds like it has a manifold leak.

 

Many people complain of an exhaust leak type sound on the driver’s side and after taking it to the dealer they are told the sound is normal without further explanation. I think the overwhelming majority of these cases are the vacuum pump exhausting into the engine.

I would also like more info. I read your posts on doing it, way out of my league. How much do you think the overall cost would be to have a mechanic do this? My truck is still under warranty so I might see if they will just replace it for now.

I would also like more info. I read your posts on doing it, way out of my league. How much do you think the overall cost would be to have a mechanic do this? My truck is still under warranty so I might see if they will just replace it for now.

I would stick with getting warranty work done. Same with the OP, he should be approaching the dealer if he hasn’t already to see if they can resolve this issue. The mechanical pump is covered under the bumper to bumper warranty, not the powertrain.  

The electric pump install shouldn’t take a competent mechanic more than 2 hours of labor. Since you’re not plumbing in a bypass oil filter, once the old pump is removed (which is the hardest part of the entire thing), plug the oil galley holes with 2 screws. Simple. Use 5” stainless steel bolts, stainless nuts and washers to secure the new pump to the frame. Drilling the frame is the second hardest part, which isn’t hard with the right drill and drill bit. Add a vacuum reservoir so the pump doesn’t run all the time, connect the hoses, wires and voila, you’re done. I wouldn’t pay more than $150 for someone else to do it.

Thanks for the info. I've been to my dealership 3 times for this noise, 1st they said bad gas then they said they don't know what it is so its normal. It's driving me nuts.

So you're having the same noise as me, or is yours different?

I do have your noise also, its only when the truck is cold after it warms up it stops. Dealer said it was normal. I also have another noise that sounds like an exhaust leak only under acceleration. These "normal" noises are making me consider a Ford.

Yup, mine goes away too when warm.  I'm at the dealer now.  Lets wait and see what they say.

Well, of course the truck was warm by the time I got to the dealer so they couldn't hear it.  I had a recording of the tick and the tech said it sounded like the high pressure fuel pump but said they all do it.  It's bs but what can I do?  

 

Screw it, it's under warranty. If something breaks, I'll get it fixed.

Others have been told the same. I can tell you, my truck does not sound like that and I have the same high pressure fuel pump. The difference is I don’t have the OEM vacuum pump. (My truck does, however, sound like a sewing machine from the valves and injectors)

In the end, the good news is that it’s unlikely that anything is wrong or malfunctioning. Keep the warranty, drive the truck and enjoy it for what it is.

Curious if you even found out what the issue was? Did you get it fixed or just go with it? Just noticed the noise on my 18 Silverado
