Is 6.2 worth $3700 extra?

Hot rod mag did it with a stroker, carburetor, and a Paxton. You can buy a na stroker new from GM that’s makes 450-500 HP. Add boost to 600 easy. I guess you never heard of tpi conversations for carb engines for big power. I did some of those too.

With a carb on it or one of the aftermarket multiport setups yes... not a tbi with what exactly? Two 85 or 90 pound per hour injectors in it?  That's not even enough fuel to make 600 hp flywheel... you can crank up the pressure and they will flow into the low 100s but still.

I'm only mid build of a 383 that should make 550 to 600 hp N/A... AFR 210 cc heads, 12:1 compression, cam will be a minimum 250 degree @.050" intake as a solid roller, victor manifold and an 850 quickfuel to start anyway.  Spinning it to a minimum of 7500 rpm I shoot low for my power goals... that way I am never disappointed.

Just Premium. All I wanted was an SLT with a 6.2L, Bose stereo, and heated and cooled seats. All the other included accoutrements of the SLT trim were fine, but I didn't want to pay for the BS that I didn't want/need, so I went with SLT Premium and these three upgrades. Oh, and mine was a little cheaper because it is a 2WD. All I needed was 2WD because when I moved from my farm town to the Los Angeles area, my old truck never saw 4WD again. My plan the whole time was to supercharge it, so the weight reduction was on my mind. Regardless, Hiley had SLTs with Premium Plus and 4WD under 40K.

My sticker was $51,385 and I paid $38,850.IMG_4872.thumb.JPG.b5dfeee653a7446273996c97c4ef33f4.JPGIMG_6672.thumb.JPG.89e953434ad738974f348e7433de2290.JPG

It's 2wd giving you that deal.  My LT was 50,800 (51.5 before the all Star discount, similar to your Texas package) and I paid 36090 +ttl.  Mine is a LT Z71,center console, All star, Bose, tow brake controller , premium paint and few small lpo options.

Most people go with the stroker to stay 5000 RPM and under. If the go forced induction they use a blower. Stroker are torque monster. Also helps with fuel requirements. My truck shifts at 4500, still smokes them through 2nd gear. Last post we’re messing up the ops thread.

Oh yeah we messed it up Haha.  You can rev a 383 to the moon if you want.  It's all in the heads, cam and induction.  Been doing it against the rules in the circle track cars for years.  I would like to do a small block for me sometime... just one as I am otherwise all LS.  Dart block, 427, 225 or larger afr's and a big solid roller.  I have nothing to put it in but that's not hard to remedy either.

I don't know who those people are, unless you're talking about 30-40 years ago.  Of the literally thousands of stroker builds I've followed over the years, not a single one of them was to stay below 5000 RPM.

I don't mean to pile on, but that's interesting for a 600 HP engine.  You'd need 700 lb-ft of torque to make 600 HP at 4500 RPM.  I have seen combos that could do such a thing, but all of them have used turbos...

The whole reason behind strokers was tq on the down low. I guess that changed? Otherwise why bother? I used to spin my small blocks up high to make power. I liked the idea of not spinning up high, engines last longer. Maybe I’m not using all available HP, I don’t have fuel problems pulls hard and lasted me eight years. No ones gotten around me yet, the ones that could get so freaked they blow the tires away. That’s what’s fun about the truck, sleeper.

Bought 2018 Tahoe with the 6.2 and absolutely love it. Gas milage is better than the 5.3 Tahoe we traded in for the 6.2. Would not go back to the 5.3.

Cubes makes more power.  If you build a truck engine you get a truck engine.  That's the 180 cc intake port head hydraulic roller cam with 10:1 compression or less crowd. Truck engine, boat engine or whatever.

Spin it high however with the parts like I have said and yup... race car lol.  Really I am only building a 383 as we got a fresh shortblock in a junk Camaro and said why not.  It's my buddies Firebird and he has a lower budget so it is what it is.  I would like a bigger bore but it will work just fine.

Of course it should make torque down low.  But in this day and age if it dies before 5000 RPM (which is not by any means "high RPM") you did it wrong and wasted a lot of money.  The heads are where the power--and torque--are made.  There are enough relatively cheap off the shelf heads that flow well, (especially for LS and LT motors) spending all the money to build a stroker and putting heads on it that will choke it off before 5000 RPM is not a smart way to do things--and will cost you low end torque as well.  Even a relative budget set of heads will still make good power over 5000 RPM on a modern smallblock if chosen well--even with a "truck cam" aimed at low end torque.  A set of heads that choke off the engine before 5000 RPM will make less torque down low too.

Obviously, I choose not to spin the high. Don’t need too. The dart heads will handle that. The MSD shuts down at 7000. I took it there once it still pulled hard. I having my fun believe as you wish I’m cool with it.

I’ve been seeing this topic float around for a few days so I guess I’ll put my two cents in.

I’ve owned  the following:

2015 Chevy Silverado LTZ with the 5.3/ 6Spd - totaled in a head on doing just under 55. The 5 star crash rating is legit.

2015 GMC Sierra SLT with the 6.2/ 8 Spd - Traded for my current vehicle below

2018 GMC Sierra SLT with the 6.2/ 8Spd

I Love(d) all 3 trucks and the 5.3 was not a bad engine. It pulled my 6000lb TT up the mountains of Idaho. I surely wasn’t going to win any races but it worked. Now once I had a taste of that 6.2 I was hooked! Plenty of power and torque..... and with those 2018 deals it made trading up a no brainer.

I'm sure it is, and don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking it.  I'm just sayin' with all this deflection it's pretty obvious you've never put it on a dyno but go around saying it makes 600 HP.  That's a pretty big number to be bragging about for an engine that's never been dynoed, especially one you shift at 4500 RPM.

Back to the topic at hand:

.... I have never owned a 6.2 so I am wondering is the bigger motor worth the extra money?

If you're going to tow much, especially anything relatively heavy, especially especially in mountains or anywhere with large hills, absolutely!  Life will be much more pleasant when doing so.

If you don't do the above, but are a performance oriented guy, one who has owned (or wanted to) fast cars, enjoy "driving," etc, absolutely!  The 6.2 is a fantastic engine with giant aftermarket support and can be a lot of fun.  Mine only made about 500 HP with simple bolt-ons....   :D    And no, one of those bolt-ons was not a blower.    :D    The 5.3 is fine and responds well to mods, but if you're one of the above it'll always be in the back of your mind that every mod you do adds less power than it would on a 6.2.

If the truck is just a tool, just a mode of transportation and cost of ownership is what's most important to you, the 6.2 isn't worth spending an extra $3700 and the extra for premium gas on every fillup.

I need an explanation.  It looks to me like all of the rebates are via GM Financial, none by the dealer.  Is that correct?  If so, how much do you think I could expect the dealer to knock off on this truck?  They offered me $38500 for my Tahoe where as Laura GMC only offered me $33500, but I still think that is a little low.  Am I stretching to think I can get them to $4000 or $4500 difference if I use the Costco rebate?

Shifting RPM has nothing to do with capable HP. Simple bolt ons equals 500 HP hummmmm.

I definitely believe it is worth the extra dollars, as I said before having a choice between the 5.3 and 6.2, I'd go with the 6.2. Performance and gas mileage is definitely better (your milage may differ, but mine went up)
