Not surprised that the media is jumping all over this .

This happens every year around this time this just happens to be a little colder than usual. I doubt any records will be broken around here anyways. Hell this is only a few days . I remember about five years ago it was below zero for like twelve straight days

Minneapolis had 54 days it was below zero that winter . Remember the polar vortex?

Antifreeze would be fine. I doubt you would be that cold to freeze the antifreeze and blow out the freeze plugs on the engine.

 

If you want to help protect your washer fluid just add more alcohol to it. That's essentially what keeps it from freezing is a higher alcohol solution.

 

Put some of that aged 1 year J. Carver bourbon in there. About all it's good for.

Thinking it is just rubbing alcohol, or lighter fluid, probably could drink it and live (happily) if you went off of the road. Could only imagine what your paint would look like after it sits on it all winter.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just don't let anyone or anything drink it. It has a very low vapor pressure, and evaporates quickly.

I’m currently on the deck drinking a ?. It’s 51F out. Was 18F this am. I’m in high elevation AZ @ 7000’. We average 100” of snow a year but the sun is so intense at this elevation we usually get several 50 degree days during winter. 

 

Have some relatives in the crazy cold area and they are not looking forward to it!

I assume that -44 is the wind chill? otherwise your coolant in the motor might have some trouble

That's was the actual temperature at 7am Sunday. No wind-chill added 

My coolant is good to -40 so I'll be idling my truck for hours if it dips down below-40.  I don't want problems

Add a little puff of wind and the wind-chill is about -60 F.

I am considerably North of International falls, Saturday was -40f before the wind, so -45f with the wind factor, -50f at 70mph going down the highway and we have one more week of that BS yet. I have had problems with WWF this year already, I buy big barrels out of Winterpeg for my service trucks and Class 8's for the bulk price. Their mix must have been a little water heavy last round, so I added a 4L jug of generic non-diluted AF to it and it cleared up. The Chevy nozzles like to freeze, especially if you don't get all of the summer stuff out before winter hits. You should be good with most brands, if you have issue freezing the nozzle just add a little pure antifreeze, or airbrake antifreeze (or cheaper straight methanol) to your bottle. You wont have any issues with the engine's coolant at that temperature unless GM uses a different coolant (or temp rating) in the US? I don't run a winter front on any of my GM gasoline trucks. Does your truck have an engine block heater? Because if your truck is not used to starting in temps that cold, they usually wont haha.

I got a block heater but my truck is brand new I got just under 2000 miles on it. It better start. I might just plug it in at night though. No sense in beating the hell out of it just to get it started. I put in some prestone washer fluid good to -35F and i might just get some better stuff when I get up there because all I can find in Minneapolis is -35 .
