It can increase mpg as for the same power output the tires turn more aka move you farther down the road.

I would look at a good tune first. It is 1/4 the price and you can pick up more power and better shifts. You need to change the tire size and also the TCS values. I would tighten up. The slipping as it is harder on the trans moving those large tires coming out of afm or fuel. Cut.

My understanding that a higher gear number means better transfer of power on the lower gears and getting into top gear faster, which means top gear will run at a higher RPM on highway driving, which means lower MPG during highway but better city MPG.

Is this thinking not correct? I don't see how it can better both your city and highway MPG considering you're changing a single gear. Same as a cam you're favoring top end or torque but not both. I'm no mechanic so this area is new to me and I very well could be wrong but I don't understand how changing your final gear ratio for more get up and go could possibly increase your highway MPG. I suppose you could up your city MPG without effecting your highway milage in a very measurable way considering the OD gear is so tall?

Ive heard so many people recommend regearing from the 3.42 gear ratio to the 4.10 or 4.56 for a 33-35 inch tire.  I understand that it will increase the MPG a bit.  But honestly for my z71 a regear is 2000+ and something I may do down the road.  But is it necessary and how much of a difference will it actually make.  Is it necessary for an average guy that just likes to drive his truck back and forth to work and around town with no intentions of showing off just wanting to look good!?!?

For what you’re using the truck for no you don’t need it.

I for example tow a 33’ toy hauler at around 9000lbs. I have a 7” lift on 35’s. In my situation I very much need it. Im going from a 3.42 to 4.56. From all the gear ratio and fueling calculators I’ve seen, a 4.10 gear isn’t enough

I've been considering regearing my truck that has 3:08 gears.  Can someone recommend a shop in Texas that does this?  I've tried to find a shop that specializes in doing this  but have been unsuccessful.

Where in TX are u?

DANG THATS A BEAUTIFUL RIDE.  i have the white one just like that.  Whats the lift here on this one? 6.5?  also where did you get your tow mirrors? Also what other options do you have here on the beauty?  Any tune?

Thank you sir! It’s an 8 inch lift with an additional 1.5 body lift because I didn’t want to notch the bumper or do a nor cal mod on the fenders. The mirrors are syppo tows with smoked leds that I disassembled and sanded all the texture out of and then had color matched. If by options you mean mods, front to back it has headlight amber delete lens from klearz, LTZ chrome grill, K&N Blackhawk intake,  Mighty mouse catch can,  Color matching and powder coated engine bay, syppo mirrors, all color match trim on interior, recon 3rd and tail lights all been disassembled and color matched,  Color match tailgate handle,  line X bedliner,  Magnaflow exhaust, g2 dif cover, wicked  steering rack lock, amp steps, XD 201 22’s on toyos, lift is coil over and new leaf packs, polished drive shaft and exhaust. And then all the custom candy powder coating throughout the truck, wheels and suspension and some custom vinyl here and there. I’m currently looking into tunes and on another site everybody and their mom loves the Diablo (Lew) tune so until I hear somebody with something better that can back it up I’m probably going to go with that, Also possibly a rotor upgrade. And yes 13ish mpg unless I’m cruising on the freeway. Sorry if that was more info than you were looking for haha

Seems to defy logic and yet on occasion it does work out that way. It was more common when motors were carbureted but it can happen with fuel injected motors as well. Modern mapping is dynamic. We no longer have a set amount of fuel for a given rpm no matter what. RPM is considered but so is 'load'. Fuel trims are huge now as is torque management initiated fuel and spark retard. Most of what Joe Average hates about the factory tuning is hated without knowledge of it's workings in its entirety.

Of course everything in reason. A move from 3.08 to 3.23 may improve MPG while stepping off the cliff to 4.88? Not likely. Yet circumstance may dictate it other given the right load to work against.

Hell no it wasn’t more info.  That’s awesome!  Any pics of the interior!?

Did you do the Klearz swap yourself? If so, how was the process?

Well first the word more power is incorrect. It may feel that way and be faster but it is simply the use of the bower you have. The 4:11 for example get you quicker response of the line and down low this will help large trucks and big tires where the fixed value of the power is need to be maximize. On the express way it can hurt you but with a 6 or 8speed the od and final. Ratio is much better.
Towing you want more trans gears and a low rear end gear. So you "in speed" rpm is low.
In tune we change the drive gear demand tables so there is power and aggressive. But low throttle input or demand it knows that it can up shift and does keeping that rpm low and getting you to you overdrive gears faster.
Think of the corvettes, camaros, and firebird. The manuals had a "skip shift" and under low exceleration it locked out 2nd gear so you go 1 to 3 to save mpg.
Again better use of the engine power and tans tables are way better. Than gear alone.

Well you know how we love our rides, People ask me what I’ve done to it and I’m like “well let me break out my PowerPoint” haha  and yes I have pictures of everything done to the truck because I did the majority myself but couldn’t have done it all without the help of good friends for actual paint color application, powder color application, the polishing of my driveshaft and my headlights. 8F41A09E-68BC-4167-B86D-E9D306BBE932.thumb.jpeg.9262a5c49af9d5ab6f192441abe1eb7e.jpeg

Damn that’s pretty sweet I love that bluish powder coat you got going!  Real nice thank you for the pictures

I did not my friend I was doing my tail lights at the time, my buddy Frank he did the headlights  and they came apart reasonably easily but I remember him saying I hate permaseal like 100 times while he was cleaning it all out of the channels because that stuff does not want to come off and you have to get every little piece of it off so that when you re-seal the headlights it makes a perfectly even seal so you never get moisture inside of them.

Again thank you, it’s a transparent powder coat called HD Teal over a micro flake base coat. Looks pretty cool when it gets some sun on it in my opinion.

With 4:56 gears and 295/70/17 tires I average 17.5MPG  city and hwy combined, I could definitely get better but that seems to be my happy medium of still enjoying the truck and maintaining decent fuel millage.

That being said, around town the added power back I can easily get 10-13 MPG if I don't stay out of it.

I should have said faster response, but yeah I follow. I've already had a tune, just looking for more power around town myself, but didn't want to kill the highway MPG. Thanks for the info.

So 4:11 would be your recommended gear size if I was running 37’s? (a future endeavor)..  my knowledge of gear ratios is borderline nonexistent and I’ve read plenty of topics you have chimed in on along with your own build thread and you seem very knowledgeable on drivetrain. I do some towing but lots of highway and surface street driving.
