Whine Noise and lower than normal oil pressure - Need advice ASAP

2014 Silverado - 5.3l - 130k

A few days ago my truck developed a whine/hum/vibration sound when started up and at idle.   We had real cold, below zero temps, and I figured it was probably related to that.   After it's driven for a while the noise goes away.   It still idles smooth and seems to drive completely normal.  With it I noticed my oil pressure seems to be lower than normal.   While driving I'm at 35-40,  idle dropping down around 20 (it was never that low before at idle that I remember).

Oil level was just fine but for safe measure I just changed it with no difference.

Not sure what I'm in for and if I should continue to drive it / drive it to work tomorow?

Watched the videos. It’s hard to tell but maybe a bearing going out on a belt driven component? You could try to narrow down the source with a mechanics stethoscope.

Oil pump. I recently bought a 2014 Ltz that had a whine noise. Sounded pretty much like a power steering pump that was going bad, but maybe not quite as loud. Brought it back to the dealer and they did a tear down of the motor to diagnose. They found a ring in the oil pump was cracked. I had normal oil pressure and everything, only symptom was the annoying whine it caused.

Interesting.

If it is the oil pump - any idea on cost to replace?

I have a love/hate relationship with this truck.  Overall I'm just bummed.  I bought a newer truck with the intent to drive it 300k+ but this thing has cost my more money than all my previous vehicles combined.

Trust me, I have the same relationship. I have wanted a 2014-15 body style since they came out. Finally got in the financial situation to buy exactly what I want, then whammo I start discovering all these issues they have. Partly my fault, I should of done a lot more research than I did before buying.

I got got a copy of the invoice for the work done to my truck and the cost was $2,000. But I don’t know how accurate that’d be for someone bringing it in. Because, I bought my truck used from a dodge dealer and they included their own power train warranty. Being they were a dodge dealer they brought it to a Chevy dealer for the work. My service manager at the dodge dealer told me the Chevy dealer agreed to do some of the work for a certain amount of money(I think the dodge dealer didn’t think there was anything wrong with the truck). So in the end I don’t know if the dodge dealer work out some kind of deal with the Chevy dealer to lower the bill or anything because none of the tear down and diagnostic work is on the invoice.

Bringing it to an independent shop later this morning to get looked at.

I know folks say the lower oil pressure is normal but I can say with 100% certainty, it didn't do this 2 weeks ago and has never dipped this low since I've owned the truck.  The lower oil pressure and hum noise seem to have started about the same time.

The shop didn’t pinpoint the issue entirely but said they’re guessing a relief valve on the oil pump being stuck.   That make sense?

Recommended trying an additive and if that doesn’t help to bring in and they’ll tear it down, but it wouldn’t be cheap.

.. that psi variation is normal operation of these oil pumps. I was concerned when I first noticed this too until I learned that GM uses a variable displacement oil pump in these engines .. they are designed to drop oil pressure at idle to minimum engine requirements in order to achieve better gas mileage.

.. here is a cool little animation on you tube for the operating theory (not GM specific).

.. caveat, I am not diagnosing your particular engines operating variables.. just noting that these oil pumps are designed to drop pressure with reduced load.

Keep us posted Pickupman.

If there was an oil pressure problem, your AFM would not operate properly.

Have you noticed any funny changes with V4 to V8 and back to V4 operation recently?

The truck has had a BlackBear tune for the past 35k or so and with that turned off AFM.

The pump itself is around $100

Can someone chime in? Aren't these fairly less complicated to replace?

They are under the timing cover at the front of the engine and I know require a special alignment tool which is critical to installation of the new pump.

Is there any need to drop the pan?

Anyone?

Truck is going to the dealer tomorrow.    We’ll see what they say.

20 lbs is too low.

30 is the lowest I’ve see.  40 fresh oil warm idle. 30 older oil warm idle. 40 psi cold idle always.
