What Scotty gets dead wrong is the information on the Vega block and rings. No Teflon involved. The block is a die cast unit of A-390 Reynolds aluminum alloy. 17% Silicon content. The bores were etched before special geometry  Seal Power chrome rings were fitted. This left a very hard running surface as the rings contacted only silicon. Preproduction models were improperly honed damaging the bore. In early test in California those motor used a quart per 3,400 miles and the story stuck like stink on a skunk even after the issue was solved. Here is a link with the full story.

What he gets right is engines shouldn't use oil. Not any significant amount between 'reasonable' oil changes. But...what's reasonable? Ops...poked the bear. LOL

I've been using mobile one 0w20 . It is a 6 speed. Just inspected the undercarriage and can't find any sign of oil anywhere. Still  looks new underneath. A friend told me I should  start using the sea foam spray  to help keep the intake valves clean. Is this a good idea? Have noticed when at a stop light under load the center console shakes and my water cup vibrates to the point water comes out of the cup, could this be because  of dirty valves?

I will confirm this statement.  I was always using pennzoil ultra platinum and switched to amsoil about 15k miles ago.  While oil consumption is something some of these GM engines do, the amsoil has seemed to reduce mine.  Prior to amsoil i was adding a quart at 2000-2500 miles.  Since then I have been adding maybe 1/4th of a quart or less.  Let them do the oil consumption test though.  Sometimes there are actually issues that they will warranty.  I forget the consumption rates needed to rebuild or replace an engine by GM but its pretty absurd.  I think its something like 2 quarts every 2000 miles or something.

That’s insane, neither one of my GMC’s burn any oil, none and I check with the dipstick once a month and always same level. That’s great the you’re using Amsoil, oil that claim to be Full Synthetic are NOT 100% Synthetic. Good luck to you

insane yes but unfortunately true.  As someone posted above me, most LS forums and facebook groups will confirm the mystery oil consumption that [some of] the LS and LT engines have.  My truck doesnt have any blow by or leaks.  My catch can catches a decent amount of vapors but not 1 quarts worth.  I believe since switching to amsoil sig series my catch can doesnt get as full as quickly either.  My other car with an LS1 doesnt seem to burn any oil.  However it mainly sits in the garage lol.

Indeed. Toyota, Honda, and Subaru all say that 1 quart every 1200-1500 miles is "normal". Ford says it's normal for the Mustang GT350's 5.2 Voodoo can consume up to 1 quart every 500 miles and that's using 5W-50.

 

Most modern engines burn oil even when the oil level on the dipstick doesn't change. Test the used oil and you might see up to 5% fuel by volume. 

 

1/2 quart in 5000 miles is nothing.

GM will warranty any engine that burns more than 1 quart every 2000 miles *if* you have an oil consumption test performed by the dealer. That's not an absurd level of oil consumption when you consider the fact that the "reliable brands" like Toyota and Honda considering oil consumption of 1 quart every 1,200 miles to be "normal'.

I just went 15,000 miles (20,000 on 6.2L) in one year on AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-20 and it NEVER used any oil, stayed on full mark for the 15,000 miles and I never added a drop..

So youre comment got me curious what the consumption rate was for GM.  I found a link to their test.  It states for cars and light trucks, 1 quart per 1000 miles is acceptable.  They also state aggressive driving (3000 rpm to redline) increases consumption to an acceptable level of 1 quart per 500 miles.  Thats crazy for a truck that pulls trailers a lot or around here where 80-90mph is the norm on our toll roads.

In most states it's highly illegal to tow a trailer at 80-90 mph on public roadways. Using a little extra oil would be the least of your worries. The reason oil consumption warranties have an exception for extended high RPM operation is because the crankcase is a violent environment at that RPM. Gases and oil vapor are whipping around in the crankcase at over 100 mph. Some of that vapor can and will be carried out of the crankcase through the PCV system.

If there has ever been a piece of information that needs to  be ignored from GM this is it. There is nothing normal about using a quart in five hundred miles, a thousand miles or even five thousand miles.

 

All that statement really says is they wont do anything about it until the most gullible person on earth won't tolerate it. :rolleyes:

GM recommendations are not based on customers using high quality synthetic oils but on oil that meets the minimum standards (dexos) and not oils that are good, better or best.  By using base oils with higher volatility, more oil consumption is to be expected. Using one qt in 2,000 miles could be simply the result of the oil itself and not the engine.  Does anyone really think these cheap synthetic oils selling at the discount stores are using the best base stocks, heck no. They are using what they can get by with because they know that 90% are shopping for cheap oil and are changing it every 3,000 miles and that's what thier game is, to sell more oil.

Those were two seperate statements about going 80-90 and towing trailers.  Either way more often than not Ive seen big rigs doing 80+ down our toll roads and rarely see a light truck towing above 70.  I do find it hard to believe that when Im doing 90 on the toll road the pvc system is sucking in 1 quarts worth of vapors per 500 miles.  In fact my catch can says otherwise.  However Im a realist and know since (in my situation) im not seeing any blow by, so the oil must have been vaporized and burned somewhere within the engine.  I still think its laughable to allow this much oil consumption.  I've had far cheaper vehicles that never burned a drop of oil that get driven as hard as my current truck.  I'll give GM the benefit of the doubt since I know their LS and LT engines are pretty solid and reliable.  Thats why my mustang has an LS in it.

    • Hey guys, sorry for the confusison about this. This wasn't my experainnce, it was copied and pasted fom the net. 
    • The problem with failure rates or increase failures are there’s people who don’t have a problem. What are you doing wrong they say. We had 4 5.7 GM diesel’s in the family when they came out. One was flawless. My uncle who happened to be the most abusive. Early rotary engines were known to use oil. I abused my first car so bad in six months I replaced the clutch, transmission and rear end. It didn’t use oil. My brother in law has a 2013 Tahoe and an older Yukon. The Yukon has 280K miles. The Tahoe around 175K. He runs them to about 300K. If his lifters fail before that time he would consider it a failure. My Hondas, I know people hate it when I mention them. Identical engines. One with cylinder deactivation one doesn’t have it. One shudders when the eco light goes on or off. Cylinder deactivation. But wait! According to the web. It can happen with lock up too. So now people in the know are changing the oil and transmission fluid more often. Then you read it could be a programing issue. So what do you do? There’s lots of money involved. I see three ways to deal with it. One only works if you don’t drive lots of miles. Lease, never get out of warranty. Or only buy older vehicles with a good track record. They all have bad runs. Usually when there’s a change. Even Toyota and Honda. 
    • Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled.     • UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update  
    • GM Global A pickups 2019-2022 can do OTA programming for the radio.  GM VIP (GM Global B) can do OTAs for almost every module on board.  So a 2022.5 and newer pickup can do OTAs for recalls like the 2.7 fuel flow recall.  EVs get OTAs that improve one pedal driving, radio issues, HVAC issues, updated battery management software, etc.     So age of the vehicle/what GM electrical platform its on will alter what amount of updates can be pushed on OTAs.
