Looking for a good system but my budget is $ 400.

Also what do you look for when purchasing a R.D.?

They are about useless these days. There are systems that work but cost $5,000 or more and have many remote mounted sensors and jammers built in. Like the k40 best on the market.

Escort 360 Max is amazing but it is around $500.  Get you a BlendMount and MirrorTap for it and you are good to go!  It is a great detector and gives you PLENTY of advance notice.  The app that goes with it is super helpful also.

I had them in the seventies and a CB too. Driving the double nickel was excruciating. All that to drive 62 in a 55. Cant imagine the need today. Where I drive 72-74 no worries.

Escort and Valentine are good detectors to get.    Most now use the Waze app.  It alerts you of police ahead for the most part.

Well I had the k40 jammer on my Ferrari and it was well used. I have done 120 in the truck. And over 100 many times in the camaro.
And back in the day I collected speeding tickets. Oh to be young and dum again....

I grew up and lived in New Jersey till I was 23. My parents siblings and my wife’s family moved Texas. I got a ticket in NJ for 5 over, very stressful driving. I was a parts runner initially when I first got my license for my fathers job sites. I would travel to Pennsylvania, New York and NJ almost daily. I drove 60K miles that year and mostly every year since. The point system in New Jersey was insane. Moving to Texas in 79 was liberating in more ways than one. A drivers paradise.

Uniden R3 if you’re on a budget or R7.

Best long range on the market.

Does nothing for laser on/off.

Biggest pro tip: don’t be the fastest one on the road and 98% of the time, you’ll be fine.

watch YouTube tests of the above mentioned. There’s a guy who regularly does very controlled tests and reports are clear and bias free.

MY16 some good advice so far.  Absolutely do not be the lead car in a speeding pack or be going 7-10+ mph over the limit while driving with no traffic around.  Keep your eyes peeled near construction areas, approaching overpasses or hills, blind curves, at night, and places where speed limits transition rapidly to lower limits.  Keep in mind that terrain will be a factor in determining how far away a radar detector will alert to police radar.  Here in Texas it is mostly flat so a detector like a Uniden DFR7 or Radenso SP will likely save your hide if the officer is using constant on radar.

However DPS prefers instant on radar meaning their unit is on standby until the officer triggers it to get a speed reading.  If you are going over their threshold for speeding you are definitely getting a ticket.

For long range detections and having the ability to detect brief instant on bursts on the road ahead I would recommend either a Uniden R1 (No GPS) or the R3 with GPS.   If you can splurge a little by all means consider the R7 but it is $200 over your budget.

Consider installing Waze app on your phone as people report speed traps, wrecks, stopped cars, etc.. on the road ahead. (YMMV depending on time of day and traffic ahead)

As for Laser Detection no radar/laser detector will give much warning if at all unless you are being directly targeted.  Basically they only notify of an impending speeding ticket.  For protection against laser enforcement purchase ALP laser attentuators and including installation will probably spend around 2K.

For solid advice and reviews head over to the Vortex Radar website.  He also has videos on YouTube.

Good luck and stay safe.

Issue is and I have the ticket to prove it is cops lie. I have family that are police and they say the same. And as I have talked with lawyers and judges. A officer is a professional in his field and can tell best the speed of a vehicle. His word of what he sees is taken over your word. The laws are also written that way with the burden of proof.
I watched a man say he was changing lanes and the cop said on ticket he was 5-10 over. Then officer wasn't there so judge asked random officer to read ticket and swear it on record. Then heard the man and found him guilty. Laws are stacked against you.
I had a fish tail and speeding 80mph in a 45. Or something like that. Switched to impeding traffic. I have about a dozen impeding tickets.
Lawyers are speed dial.
Biggest one ever was 140+ in a 45. Again impeding. Same with my running a red, speeding, no signal, and failure to show registration. Changed to impeding.
Those are no points as it isn't a moving violation. $120 fee and free to go.

I’ve had 3 tickets in NJ in my first 3 years driving. 5-5-10 mph over. Lost my license for 60 days. I’m 63 had 2 more, both under 40 years of age. I didn’t slow down I got smarter and the laws changed. A cop friend once told me don’t speed alone. When in a pack don’t be first or the last one speeding.

You are quite welcome sir.  Not law enforcement but I drive a considerable amount for work.  After a scare and noticing a high amount of speed enforcement (tax revenue collectors) along the I35 corridor between San Antonio, DFW area I pulled my old Valentine 1 off the shelf.  Falses to blind spot monitors on practically every higher end car drove me to research a new radar detector.  I wasn't looking to spend $600+ on a detector and caught a deal on a new Uniden R3.  Works wickedly well and has a ton more range than pretty much everything else on the market unless you spend crazy money for a remote mount unit. ($1500 or more plus installation)
