Should have got a 6.2, sell or supercharge.

Unfortunately, in my experience, modding adds maintenance expenses.  However, a Whipple supercharger would be great fun and make the 5.3 stronger than a 6.2.  that style blower tends to give huge torque boost down low as well.  It still won't be a D-max, but it might start to feel more like one.

Im not saying i need or expect dmax power. I just feel like the power is soggy, the trans feels like it "shifts out" a little early. Maybe i need to play with the tuning some.

Just disable torque management and set the traction controls to on at 400*. The set you data logs and see how you like it. Also you have 4 factory trans settings normal,cruise,tow/haul, hot. So see what you like and copy the table to the other pattern. I use the all field editor to increase or decrease shifts vs going through every field. Same when someone say it is great but the 1-2 is to hard decrease .5. Also best to let the truck get to 180* engine temperature as the fuel tables, cat warm up, and idle change.

Before you are done look at the power enrichment. You floor it but computer doesn't let you have it all.

Sure I am missing something. Still need to redo mine when I find the time. Ha

This isn't even a "tune" as all the ve tables are still stock. We are just unlocking the power that is there so we can data log and see when and why it is stopping the fun.

Ive read you arent supposed to disable the TM on the gen V stuff with it all being torque based? I know back on my 2500hd lq4/4l80e i was able to just remove it all and was i good bump in power.

Yes and no. We do to tune so we can see true values in the log and know if power is being pulled out where it is coming from. The trans are clutch to clutch and this causes a lot more heat and wear. However there is a ton of slip programmed in for driveability and afm/DOD as a there is a power output difference. Your ve tables and torque values must be right or close. Think of it as the laws of system the trans works in these variables. If they are guessed or fake you will have issues.
Simple stuff like shift up and down based on mph or rpm is easy but 100% driver type. There isn't really a right answer to a point.

I know its not going to be a dmax, but our other vehicle is a 6.2 denali and it is far stronger than my 5.3. i wanted a 1500 for a better ride and less maintenance costs

The 5.3 is a great engine. I've owned and maintained an Ecotec 5.3 for 5 years now. On the engine side of things, it's all been gravy. You're talking turbos and superchargers and power adders, now you're conflicting with the "less maintenance costs" part.

Cool your jets, man. You have a Denali with a 6.2, great. Why do you need your pickup to double as a race car? It's utilitarian in function. Did you say what the rear end gear was? I promise you, a 5.3 with a 3.42 will pull a hell of a lot of weight for a 1/2 ton truck.

It sounds like you want a Camaro.

I do want a camaro haha, but not really practical for me. I dont see what is wrong with having a pickup and has some power? Something in the 500hp range isnt going to drastically affect maintenance costs.

[emoji23] ok man, whatever you say.

I will leave it at this. I'm a mechanical engineer by trade, and I know the engineers at GM designed the 5.3 as the workhorse do-it-all engine. They always have on their mid-size small block V8s. In the old days, it was the 5.7. It's got some power, but not nearly enough to over-stress the driveline. It's meant to just plain work. I'd reckon they sell more 5.3 1500s than any other configuration. It isn't a hot rod, but it plain gets the job done. Even the latest 4.3 is almost as strong as the LS-based 5.3 they used to sell.

If I were you, I'd leave it be.

Cool! I was a ASE master certified and GM certified technician until i started working for the DOD. So if something needs fixed i think im good! Maintenance costs im talking about was thousands of dollars to replace duramax injectors, or a trans rebuild, or head gaskets. Thats why i went away from the dmax. I literally cant even count the amount of 5.3 pistons ive replaced due to oil consumption and shitty GM engineering.

That's not been my experience with it. I have 180k miles of combined experience on a 5.3 L83 and have had no problems. It's been just fine.

If you had such poor preconceived notions about it, why'd you buy one?

Im not talking about L83. Im talking about the train wreck that the 07-10ish that are known for oil consumption. My point was just because it was designed by an engineer doesnt make it perfect. I owned one of those too. Im not afraid of problems like that because i know i can fix it[emoji106]

But the engine your truck does have is an L83. [emoji848]

I did not own an 07-13, and from what I have heard about oil consumption, I do not see on the L83.

Ok, you missed my point entirely, thank you for your opinion, have a good night.

No. I got your point. You want your 5.3 truck to perform like it's built for the Indy 500 when it was purpose-built for life as a working daily driver.

By all means, mod it and tune it to your heart's desire. But when the entire thing grenades on you, don't be surprised.
