If it came installed in your truck you get 3 months free, but you have to pay 9.99 for the startup fee. If you added it after the fact I don't think you get anything for free.

Thanks Mark. That's the info I was looking for. If I only get three months with the option, not quite sure if its worth it. What are some people's thoughts on if the XM is worth the monthly $$.

I did not get XM on my truck. After hearing so many people raving about I am going to add the Delphi Skyfi unit to my truck. I am actually looking right now to find the best deal for the reciever, car kit and FM modulator (I don't have a cassete player). See this thread

For $9.99 a month and 100 channels, I think it's well worth it!

I added the XM service two months after it came out to my '99 GrandAm, and when I sold that to get my Z71 in December 2002, I transferred the unit to the truck. In short, I listen mainly only to my XM. I haven't listened to the local FM in months and rarely to my CDs.

What I like is the sheer amount of variety. If you want something more than music, just go and check the choices. Briefly, I have CNN, CNET, and the Weather Channel programmed in. The Classic Channel is a hoot with the old radio drama shows. Alas, I was unable to finish listening to a Lone Ranger episode in which Tonto got thrown from his horse in Devil's Canyon. I have now gone through life, not knowing if he made it out of there alive.

I got three free months of XM radio with my truck (no start-up costs). Its awesome to say the least. News, music and the best channel - the comedy channel.

Like most people, I hardly ever listen to radio or CDs any more. I just did a 1,200 mile trip in the rig and listened to the same station the entire trip. The wife and I are talking about getting an XM receiver for our house we love the service so much.

Xm can in my '03 suburban. Got 3 months free with no startup cost. At first I wasn't sure about it. Now my 3 months are drawing to a close and I'm ready for $10 / month to continue. It is great.

We have XM in the new Yukon and love it. I love all the different choices. Currently, I have the following programmed:

1. 80's

2. Bluegrass

3. Boneyard

4. Bloomberg

5. Nashville

6. Fox News

The two comedy channels are hilarious, totally uncensored. It's cool to be able to listen to the news in the car. I'm definitely glad we got it.

Greyghost you might want to check out Sirius. I work at circuit city and we just switched from playing XM to playing Sirius. Plus sirius is having a major push and is letting their stuff go for good deals in order to catch up to XM. It is a little more expensive but the 60 music channels are commercial free whereas XM has commercials.

I've had XM for almost a year as an add on and I love it. I also put it in my wife's car with an FM modulator unit. I took the car to the races couple of weeks age and parked it next to my RV. To make a long story short after listening to Nascar on XM I go tinto the RV and was searching for station and the XM was coming in on the radio in the RV. Unexpected bonus.

The XM has been sounding interesting to me over the past dew months, and sounds like everyone here loves theirs. I just bought a new truck, but it didnt come with it option. Can someone give me any info on where I should look for a good deal? Is this something that I would have to go back to the dealer for? How much should I expect to pay to get all the equipment (I assume I need a new/different radio?). Sorry for all the questions...it wasn't even talked about when I bought my truck.

I had Sirius in my old truck and my new truck came with XM. After listening to both of them I prefer Sirius. Obviously I am kind of stuck with XM now because I am not going to add even more antennas to my roof, but I would prefer Sirius. There music channels (that I listened to) played better music and there were absolutely no commercials (XM plays commercials on the "hit" channels). The channel line ups are very similar in regards to getting CNN, Fox news, ESPN, etc. Like someone else posted here Sirius is a little more expensive a month (12 instead of 10), but right now you can get the Sirius tuner for free if you buy a deck that can control it (saves about 125 bucks). You buy the deck and the antenna and they give you the tuner free. I had a Kenwood system in my old truck that was awesome. I would have saved it if it weren't for all the problems I would encounter with swapping a radio in the 2003s. Hope this helps.

XM is the best. My personal fav is Channel 48 Squizz. The DJ's are cool guys and they always write back if you ask them about a song. It is way worth the 9.99/moth, but you can pre-buy service in bulk and get a pretty good discount.

I use Crutchfields for all my stereo needs. If your timing is right you can get rebates etc to help with the initial cost.

I made XM a requirement when I was looking for my 2003 back in April. I'm glad I did. Even with the 6 disc changer built in - I don't use the CD that often. XM is great - day in and day out - but you really start to enjoy its value if you travel much - you're never without your favorite stations. I know competition is good for the market, but Sirius is still struggling. Since I've had good experience with XM - I wouldn't even shop. For the best resources go to XM Radio and for the best fan/user based page go to XMFan.

XMFan has forums for General discussions, Programming, Hardware, Electronics, and dedicated forums to each of the genre's of music played. You can request songs from the page - as well - they have a link in and show all songs playing on each channel at any given time. They've got close ties to XM - so obviously slanted - but it's where the info is at - they usually have it there first. The latest radio out and meant just as an add on to existing systems is just hitting the shelves the last two weeks - hard to find still, but look for the Roady.

After the first two weeks - you'll be hooked and no one will be able to pry your XM from your fingers - you'll never miss local radio again.

    • It's official. Chevy pulled the covers off the next-gen 2027 Silverado 1500, and we got the first official look.   Full breakdown here: https://www.gm-trucks.com/2027-chevrolet-silverado-official-first-look-specs/   The quick hits: LT is dead. The new core trim is just called "Silverado." Two new V8s, a 5.7L and a 6.6L. No horsepower or torque numbers yet. The 2.7 TurboMax finally gets the 10-speed. ZR2 moves to standard 35s with front and rear lockers. Over 60 inches of dash display on ZR2 and High Country, passenger screen included. Seven trims, three lifted from the factory: ZR2, Trail Boss, and a new Custom Trail Boss.   So let's get into it: 5.7 and 6.6 instead of holding out for a 6.7. Right call? Killing the LT name after all these years: bold, or a mistake? Does the new look land for you, or is it too safe? No power numbers at reveal. Smart tease, or frustrating? What are you ordering on day one?   Drop your first impressions below.
    • LOL west coast they need to see what the midwest actually has.  We have been holding at 2.99 for a few weeks now.  Even by work they have come down to 3.02 for the past week.
    • Diesel or gas?  The 37s will obviously, drastically reduce mpg, but the gasser will take a bigger hit to mpg, and power.  Rough guess, but I'd estimate at least a  2mpg hit on the diesel, and up to 4on the gasser. Maybe more.    I wouldn't sweat a gear change on a duramax at all, and unlikely on the gasser either. You're obviously not concerned with acceleration or towing, and the 10spd will find itself in the right gear without much hunting, if any.    If towing, mpg and acceleration are a concern, you're doing the wrong mods.  Either leave it alone, or do the lift/tires and let the chips fall where they may.
    • I understand. It is disturbing to think a manufacture asks so much and gives so little in engineering support. This is not a GM issues, this is a greed issue and one the ALL practice.    My intent was not to remove the wind from anyone's sail but rather to point out the areas deficient so that they can be discussed with improvements the goal. But to do that you have to know the truth and what that truth is.    The commercial interest are honed in on a few select issues in which they control all the variables and are not forthcoming in the least with their customers about the details. Failure is the only thing that drives these people to improvement. One way not to fail it to manage public "expectations". The set a bar they can clear and put their thumbs under the suspenders with chest puffed.... Only the internal data tells the story fully. As we don't have access to that for decades then we have to generate it ourselves. UOA's with data that matters.
    • I had skimmed through that article when you posted the link and honestly I felt rather defeated in a sense and realized that all these years in changing oil that in fact putting in what I was told was a good quality oil was probably not filtered as well as it should be although the filter put on the engine would be what ( as long as it never went into bypass mode ) would be the final filtering of the new oil that the engine components would first see, but then the filtering media itself is not up to par to what is ideal because a full flow filter would be too restrictive to filter fine enough for the engines best outcome in the long run. Only one of our tractors over the years which was a Versatile with a 855 Cummins had a separate bypass filter, some engine manufacturers did spec a partial bypass system within the main oil filter but I don't believe any other trucks or equipment I was servicing used such a filter. No doubt a product like the Amsoil bypass system is of benefit as long as nothing goes sideways with the extra plumbing and filter such as a rupture/leak that could cause the oil to pump out of the engine ( yes that Versatile had a remote canister with hoses routed to it as well ). With the idiot egr system on a diesel and as a result forcing a lot more soot into the oil, that certainly isn't helping the diesel engines cause or as you pointed out the GDI engine issue with creating more soot and aside from having a fancy secondary filtering system, changing the oil more often helping lower the total soot load.     So oil manufacturing and the end product is not something one can control and I wonder if there are specs on what various oil packaging companies produce in particle count or size. As to the filtering, if the OEM is not designing a filter size and spec that is really what it could be, they too are short changing the end user and so what is the answer. Of course as you say the oil side can only do so much if the air side isn't keeping up its end of the picture and air filters are only so efficient and if in a dusty environment such as farm or construction or driving gravel roads there is a lot of dirt to filter out and some of that ends up into the air stream.    Of course the irony in places like where I am where they dump the salt on the highways but also will mix in some calcium or outright pure calcium for problem road area's, or using calcium as dust control on gravel roads, the vehicle that gets used in that environment may rust out before a properly engineered engine and maintenance finally wears out so one has to face that reality in the rust belt.
