the diesel cost more , to operate, if you go 5.3 get the 4.11 gears or 3.72 rear gear for economy,

my 2500 get 11mpg with a toyhauler, and 12  mpg unloaded, my silverado 1500 gets 11mpg loaded with trailer and 22-24 mpg on the highway unloaded, the diesels dont do much better

I'm assuming your 2500 is the 6.0? 11 mpg isn't bad if so, especially when the 5.3 gets the same

Are the 6.0's really that slow? I've read that in other posts. Also, I am planning on upgrading my trailer to a bigger one in a couple of years when my son is old enough to get on a snowmobile. It won't be my daily driver, so as much as i hate the sound of 10mpg, I'm really not all that worried about it.

6.0 = NASCAR Stocker

6.6 = F1 Race Car

6.2 = NHRA Top Fuel Dragster

Lent my friend the AT 6.2 to go to San Antone since his Duramax was in the paint shop.  He couldn't stop commenting about how much faster and lighter my truck was compared to his diesel.  One thing that doesn't compare are the brakes.  His 2500 Denali HD stops on a dime even when pulling a 6K pound trailer.  The brakes on the 1500 are marginal when towing and just ok for daily driving.

No matter which truck I choose, I will definitely level it and put a larger tire on it. Nothing too much larger than stock though.  I want to keep it as close to stock as I can. What would that do MPG and power wise to the 6.0? 6.2?

what size tire, ?

I suggest either 17" wheel on a 1500 truck or 18" wheel  on the 2500 both running 35" tires load range D for trailering, 12" wide tire.. for this set up, dont get anything less than 3.72 gears

I don't believe that for a second

I think there is a 35x11.50 out there. I cant remember if that was for 18 or 20 inch rim though. I would get something around that range. Either with the 3:72 or 4:10 gears

i don't know what to say,  there really isn't much change in mpg,  its a 2012 2500 Sierra with the 6.0. and 6speed. i'll have to check the rpo for the rear gearing , I would be willing to bet it's in the 4.10 range..

That weight is no problem for either engine and the frequency. If it's going to be a daily driver, a 1500 might give you a bit of a smoother ride. That being said, a similarly spec'd 2500 gasser might actually be a bit cheaper than a 6.2. It also has the benefit of no-AFM.

A 4500 lb load a dozen times a year?  My '84 S15 can do that (and has up and down the East coast and across NY) with a 110 hp V6.  You'd be fine with a 5.3.  I do over 20 mpg on E85 with a 5.3, which no 2500 can come close to touching.  Either a 6.0 or a 6.2 is using a lump hammer for finish carpentry, and has more to do with ego than ability.  It's a couple of sleds (you know, things you can lift and move by hand), not a car transporter.
