Safety Chains with Stock Hitch

Recommended Posts

Anyone have issues getting trailer safety chains hooked to the factory hitch openings?  If so, have you found any solutions?

I have a hell of a time getting most safety chains hooked up and usually have to twist it so it will only go on a certain way, it would be nice if there was a solution to make it easier.

I had to cut the spring clasp down about an 1/8” to make mine fit. Still holds good

It matters on what trailer i'm using. My boat has larger chains, so i get my truck in position and remove the hitch pin, feed the chains through then replace the pin and then put the tongue of the trailer on the hitch of the truck. It really doesn't take that much work but i do wish that they would of make them holes bigger or have them moved more to the side so it is less obstructed if you using a lockable pin.

Large quick links through the hitch holes and hook the chain hooks to the quick links...

...or saw them small hooks off and get some clevis hooks.

I honestly haven't. All I pull with the truck is my 22' open deck car hauler and its safety chains fit the stock hitch perfectly.  If I hooked to my little 10' utility I don't think those would fit at all but the chains are also tiny compared to my 14000 lb gvwr flat deck.

I swapped out the standard safety chain hooks with these Grade 70 hooks.

X2. I did the same thing. I keep an extra set in the toolbox in case I borrow a different trailer.

I used 1/2 clevis.  Lot stronger than quick links.
Agreed. The quick links were a temp solution until I find clevis hooks NOT made in China.

That’s the hook I’ve got but still had to cut about an 1/8” off of the clasp to make it less aggravating to hook.

I used these and really like them.   Crosby 1018133 with 4.75 ton working limit and  3/4" pins.

I like @Cowpie solution but what about these? Do you think they would fit?  It seems they are the same size that @Cowpie uses except they are a 2 pack for $22 instead of $40 a piece for the same part number from Crosby.
