I read all of these and am amazed. I have a 2015 Sierra 1500 Denali and earlier this summer I had to replace everything, pads and rotors front and rear at 42k miles.

So, I live in Syracuse, but work from home sometimes travel the Thruway to see customers. The front outside pads were real thin and the back pads were to the rotor. The back of the rotors was rusted craters.

The rear brakes looked OK, on the outside, but the rear inside pads were getting pretty thin and the rotors were rusted bad.

This is my vehicle that stays outside, but I never let it stay dirty and stop at the touchless carwash after any real salty travels.

I NEVER leave my truck dirty or salty.

One thing I wonder about is the factory 22" rims -they definitely leave the calipers very exposed?

Funny thing was the truck had been NYS inspected last September and they didn't say that I was close. Never heard the wear indicators, The only reason I took a closer look was because I had just started feeling a very slight pulse and heard a light growl.

I totally love this truck and was just surprised by the brake wear.

I'd suggest that the calipers may be sticking. That would cause the rotor to overheat and extra pad wear. The caliper slide pins need regular maintenance on these trucks.

I agree and will do this at least every spring. I have just had only GM vehicles, trucks, cars, vans etc. and have never seen rotors rust that bad. Like I said, from the exterior side, they looked fine and were VERY smooth, never warped etc. right until about 3 weeks before I replaced them all. So, I am amazed that no one else has had this problem and most seem to have the same experience that I have had with my previous GM vehicles.

Caliper slides froze. I check their freedom every tire rotation which for me is every 5,000 miles. There's a grease for that.

I see a lot of rusted rotors on a lot of different vehicles, especially the rears...pretty common for them to get pitted and then just corrode from the inside out. Nasty.

As for the uneven pad wear, I agree with everyone else...caliper pins probably need a little attention.

I find that the more you drive a vehicle, the less rust you get on the rotors...the pads will throw the moisture off a rotor when it rotates and the heat generated from braking will do the rest. A vehicle that sits is the worst thing. The people I see with the 80-100 mile daily highway commutes have the best looking brakes (but the worst looking windshields and paint up front).

Posted in another thread...but to follow up

2017 Sierra. 63 k

front pads 50 percent worn

front rotors are warped. Pads dug into them pretty good.

All slide pins were fine.

Everything came apart easy minus the bleeders. They were starting to rust jack and didn’t come out well. Bought a new set from NAPA...the self bleeders.

Removed calipers to clean and paint them. Trying to keep the rust away and make this thing last.

waiting on pads delivery (Friday) but went with AC deco severe duty from RA. Came to a little under $300 for the fronts.

Rears at a later date. Not sure if they need it but I plan on pulling the calipers to paint and match the front sooner than later. I’m 99 percent sure the front rotors were causing the pulsation at highway speeds while braking.

Going to put EBC Green stuff up front on my next pads....which I will change in couple thousand miles.....

So I went to check out the rears. They’re smoked.  Brake shoes shot too and crumbled coming off.  Had to beat one rotor off. Wicked rust holding the rotor from passing the shoes. They were at the lowest setting too.

Its a shame the rear calipers aren’t painted. Corrosion like crazy. Hardware clips were flimsy too.

Ordered the same ac severe duty rotors and pads. Love the fronts so far. Cleaned up and painted calipers too.

It seems that once you need rear brakes, you might as well do calipers and brackets too. Same with parking brake shoes.

Just brought my 2019 sierra in and rear pads completely gone and rotors rusted right out front pads aren't quite there but rotors are rusty too they suggest changing them too at same time 2200 bucks 94000kms sounds early to me thoughts??

Did you actually see the pads, that they are worn out?  And the rotors having some rust on them is meaningless, that's the sort of thing the salesman says to try to sell you on more parts.
