Oil leaking after oil change...

I have and it’s driven fine. No engine lights or anything. It was leaking from around the oil filter but it really wasn’t very much, looked like it was a really slow drip and I think I caught it before very much leaked  out.

Well, did you tighten it or it mysteriously just stop leaking? Leaks don’t just stop, either it was tightened to make it stop or it’s waiting for the opportune time when the pressure builds enough. I’d be EXTREMELY worried if I were you. At the least, go get it checked, better safe than sorry.

After a couple bad oil change experiences, I’ve started changing my own oil, perfect time to get to know your truck. Just be careful, you’ll be $&it out of luck if something happens due to low or no oil. GM will 100% toss you to the curb rejecting every bit of your warranty. Take care, Good luck!

He did tighten the oil filter and the leak stopped. He said so in his first post. I've heard nightmares about those places, but I have personally had a few good experiences with them. The dealership does mine now to keep my warranty in tact. If they mess it up, they can fix it too.

I tightened down the oil filter which made it stop. It was loose enough to where I could’ve unscrewed it by hand with no effort. I’m hoping that they didn’t tighten it down enough and it’s a non issue now that I tightened it.

Whats weird is that it took 2 weeks and a 300 mile road trip for it to start leaking. If it starts leaking again then it’s fair to say it’s the o-ring or something I’d think...

I bet they damaged it and they just decided to swap it out. Glad to hear you got it all worked out.

I’ve had something happen literally with each and every vehicle of mine. This one is the very first vehicle I’ve decided to do my own on. It’s lifted and I’m semi retired so I’ve got lots of free time and coming out of years of a Ship Repair business, I’ve kinda missed getting a “little” bit dirty lol [emoji6] Btw, if you haven’t tried this stuff before, you should. dfa615aa4de5cdebf045ef8e48f2500f.jpg

Spray it everywhere underneath your trucks frame and metal components, bonds to the metal and really does protect it. Just be aware that it drips into your concrete and may leave a few stains.

Heat cycles softened the gasket in a best case scenario. Hopefully you didn’t crank it too tight and smoosh the gasket; filters should only be hand tight. I’d be more worried that they cross threaded the filter causing it to back off. I wouldn’t trust that they put the correct oil in. When I had my ‘17, I took it to the dealer for free oil change at 500 miles, and they filled 8 quarts without ever draining the crankcase. Traded the truck a few months later. No self respecting person pays someone to change their oil; if you do, accept the hand that gets dealt as a result.

A human might not have tightened a filter enough which is a type of mistake we've all made/make in our professions or DIY projects.  Suggestions that Op should be extremely worried or he has no self-respect are not helpful and are simply incorrect.  My guess is that most North Americans don't change their own motor oil and most of these people have uneventful experiences.  I currently have mine changed at the dealership because I enjoy the time it takes by kicking tires!  BTW If someone makes a mistake that destroys my vehicle or sets it on fire, I'll be thankful that someone wasn't me!

Went back to the oil change place - they were as nice as can be and the guy basically just said he thinks they didnt tighten it down enough. Of course while I was there, they had a new employee and could hear the manager saying "hey, go down to the pit and shadow him so you can learn...". Doesn't exactly give the warm and fuzzies that they've got people who have never worked on a car in their lives working there, but I guess that's how it goes...

Reminds me of the horror story on the Audi forum where the guy took his S4 to a quick lube: they cut a hole in the underbody shield, drained his DSG and poured 6 quarts in his engine, and the pulled the air out where it immediately started smoking and lighting up. $25k for new engine and transmission. You get what you pay for.

Damn man don't scare me like that! The guys at this place seemed somewhat competent so I don't think they'd be that stupid lol

I thought about taking my truck in for the 2 free oil changes but decided not to at the last minute. I have always done my own oil changes since I was 16. I buy the oil when rebates are out and use OEM filters. Always hand tighten filter and never had one leak.

Same here, did my first oil change at 7 or 8 on the tractor, been doing my own ever since; had someone do it ONCE (dealer on that ‘17) and they messed it up. My ‘16 still has 2 free oil changes, but for semi syn...I’d have to pay the difference for full syn, and I wouldn’t trust they’re putting in full syn. Dealing with the hassle of a dealer just to save $100 isn’t worth it; it’d cost me much more in fuel and lost time than paying myself to do it. Not a single thing on these trucks that I couldn’t accomplish in my own shop; too many horror stories about incompetence, or innattention to detail. I remember decades ago I’d dropped my 442 off at the tire shop for new sneakers... picked it up with a spun bearing on #7. That shop soon was forced out of business.

You're OK with "somewhat competent?"

I have never let anyone else change the oil on any vehicle I have owned!  It's a good time to crawl under and just give everything a look over!  And too many horror stories of plugs cross threaded, filters not tightened and oil loss causing engine damage!

Bought my new GMC Silverado and did my own oil changes from the start.  Dealership called to try and get me in to do the two free service appointments you get with it.  I told them, they can rotate the tires and do anything else included except the oil change.  They looked at me strange when I told them I didn't want their free oil change.

They rotated my tires and well they checked the tire pressure and left the dang valve stem caps off last time.  So I don't trust them to do anything.  Although they did balance my tires on a road balancer pretty good!
