Wireless charger in Console Lid

Quick, inexpensive upgrade for anyone, including ones with the wireless charger already. I’ve loved having my phone sit on the console since 2007, so I’ve done this on consoles since that body.

First, open the console lid, use a plastic pry bar to pop off the cover.

You’ll need to use a die grinder or some other grinder to take down the ribs in the plastic and make it smooth.

I tried 4 chargers and this is the only one that would work thru the layers of plastic and my otter box case.

I used a 2 part epoxy used in bodywork to hold the charger to the lid. You can use any kind of 2 part epoxy to hold it on.

For wiring you have a couple options. One is plug it into the USB port inside the console. The other is, pull up on the rubber cup holder insert, you’ll fix a torx. Remove the torx and pull up on that cup holder trim piece. It will expose another torx that hold the rear panel on. Remove that torx and pull the rear panel off for access to the 12v wiring. I tapped into the 12v plug wiring And plugged the charger into that. All done. Enjoy. Not bad for about $20.

I love it! I have been wondering if there was something available from the older trucks that would fit the new ones. How well does that charger work? If its consistently good I may pick one up.

just ordered one of those chargers, I was wanting to do this on my old truck but was unsure that the charger would be strong enough to go thru the plastic and otter box, but if its working for you I'm gonna give it a try

got the charger from your link, installed it today but will only charge if I take the otter box off and remove the rubber mat from the lid

however it was an easy install even though it won't work on my phone

what phone/otter box do you have? I have the galaxy S9 and the otter box defender

iPhone X, not sure which otter box model, it’s clear and not too bulky.

IF it doesn’t work I’ll tell you how to make it. Peel back the rubber mat on the bottom of the charger, it will expose a couple of screws, disassemble the charger and glue the coils right to the bottom of the console lid. It will work then.

I was going to ask about doing that, definitely worth a try

I had to do that on a K2, worked perfect for over 3 years then we sold it. Still worked though.

getting that thing apart was a bear, finally broke the top off in pieces, but it still won't work with the otter box on, works fine without it though, soooo.... I ordered a new cover that will hopefully be thinner and work. I guess its just not going to work through five layers. (1.plastic on console,2. rubber mat, 3. otter box rubber cover, 4.otter box plastic and the 5.phone plastic)

i did the mod to my truck the first week i owned it. a year later...i never use it. for one the phone charges a lot faster when plugged in, the second reason is i use apple car play so the phone needs to be plugged in anyway. wireless carply is we need next...or wireless android auto for you rebels lol

I had an Alpine wireless CarPlay unit in my 2010 and did this same charger mod. Loved it, got used to it, so put the charger in the 2019. I rarely use CarPlay, only for maps

Thank you for sharing! I was able to use your method to make it happen! I did have to take apart the wireless charger to get the coils closer to the phone. Gotta love having 2 places to wirelessly charge!

Was going with the before mentioned single coil disk.... But decided to step up my game to 5 coils!!!!

Will be installing tomorrow... Will report back. Size is almost the exact same size as the phone tray in center console, so should work beautifully. Going to tie the power into the rear 12v.

Getting the cover off this larger one was infinity easier than the small disc one.
