I may have everyone beat on my timeline to frustration. Just purchased new 2020 GMC AT4 from Van GMC Buick in Scottsdale 3 DAYS AGO! The assembly date is June 20, 2020! It ran great the first two days... day 3, won't start. Total of 170 miles on the truck. Same issues that everyone has noted. Came outside, tried to open her up with the key fob and the battery was completely dead. Had to open manually. Push start did not function, no power whatsoever... basically a $65k brick in my driveway.

 

Connected battery to wife's Explorer and got the dash to light up but it wouldn't start. Tons of error messages. Kept trying to start it and it finally lights up... but was running very rough with knocking. This morning, started it up and it ran great. Dropped it off at dealer and they tell me there are no codes, it's running fine, the alternator and the battery look good. So I send them the videos below and a link to this thread... No word yet but will keep you all posted. So incredibly frustrating. Love the truck but now have to worry about this... what happens if it doesn't start when my family and I are in the middle of the woods camping/hunting? Ridiculous. 2020 could not get any worse. 

UPDATE: Dealer thinks they found the problem: Loose UBEC Bolts. There was a recent bulletin posted on 6/26/20 about this that may be the cause for this issue as a whole. Ask for document ID 5628169 or the following title for the GM bulletin: #PIT5756: Various Electrical Concerns (Inspect UBEC Bolts for Being Loose) - (June 26, 2020).

 

Condition: Some customers may comment on any number of electrical related symptoms. The following are some of the known reported ones:

  • no crank
  • no start
  • starter grinds or re-engages after engine starts
  • SES MIL
  • IPC guages sweep/fluctute and/or various IPC warning lights or messages
  • High or low system voltage
  • May have any of the following DTC's: B1325, B2750, B305D, B297B, C0049, P0562, P0700, U0100, U0101, U0102, U3006
  • some of these concerns may be noticed with powertrain movement, like when accelerating or braking. 

 

Cause: These concerns could be caused by the X50A underhood fuse box bolts being loose. The X50A has built in indicators which pop up as the X50A bolts are tightened down, to inidcate the X50A is fully installed. In some cases, even if these green indicators are popped up, the bolts may still be loose. 

 

Correction: Inspect the X50A Underhood Fuse Block bolts and verify they are properly torqued to 53 lb in (6Nm)

 

Dealer stated that my box was indeed loose (that's what she said). Has not been able to replicate issues. Really hoping this is the fix for my truck and all of yours. Will update forum either way. Best of luck.

General repair and maintenance shops but we focus mostly on the repair business. I had a 1500 Big Horn with the 5.7 and 8 speed. It was a great truck overall.

Not 100% sure on the year range but we do see cam/rocker issues on the Hemi engines- usually because people don't maintain their vehicles properly. Full synthetic oil changes every 5k miles will prevent most internal engine problems for the useful life of a vehicle IMO.

Still running fine? My truck is Dead in my driveway and can't get an appt for 8 days at the dealer. Hoping your fix is what fixes mine as well.

Yes, no issues whatsoever. While working from home, I start it and drive it daily. Slowly building back my confidence in the 65K rig. 

 

If you are 8 days out I would say try the fix yourself. It appears to be very easy. I've attached the bulletin here. Good luck and let us know if it works.

Talked them into an appt tomorrow morning so crossing my fingers I can get it started and to the dealer. Thanks for the info. I forwarded the bulletin to them so they added it to my notes and we'll see what happens.

Awesome. Please keep us posted. Not sure I'll ever get the confidence back in my rig until I know this fix works for everyone who has experienced this nightmare.

WIll do. I feel the same way. Supposed to take a road trip on Monday so we're nervous that we'll be stranded. Hoping it's either the UBEC bolts or the Brake Module that maybe got stuck on and drained it over the weekend. Dealer seemed receptive to the info and I'm making sure to bring 2 battery jump starters in the truck until I know for sure this is fixed.

I’ve had an intermittent no start issue for past month now and dealer hasn’t been able to find the issue. Replaced the ECM, EBCM, fuel pump driver module and performed every software update. I finally found the cause: there was a nut not fully seated on the battery distribution block on top of the battery. It’s the nut directly above the positive terminal with a small red wire attached to it.

Interesting. I'll have to check mine. Seems like GM 's having issues tightening nuts on all critical electrical parts!

Checked the UBEC bolts and they are all tight so probably not my issue. Checked the wire on the battery and tight as well. Tried jumping the truck to no avail. Charged the battery for an hour and still wouldn't start.

 

Called Roadside Assistance and they couldn't get it started. Guy said it was the 1st vehicle in recent memory that he couldn't start.

 

Called for a Tow after and he was just laughing about how many of these trucks he's towed recently. He said EVERY truck that he's towed had "computer" issues and clearly wasn't impressed with these. 

 

Appt at the dealer is in an hour so can't wait for the phonecall about how they will "fix" it when I'm sure I'll be dealing with this issue again.

Man, really sorry. That's disappointing; GM really needs to get this thing straightened out. Completely unacceptable.

Yea it's been frustrating. My wife is pretty stressed about taking the truck anywhere once it gets fixed. She's worried that we'll get stranded with the kids on a roadtrip or she'll get stuck somewhere by herself. The 3 months we've had it have been GREAT and we all love taking it everywhere, but now that our trust in it is shaken it's really hard. 

Had to cancel our roadtrip for next week and the kids are going to be bummed when I break the news to them. 

 

Couldn't get a loaner from the dealer since they're out of them supposedly and they suggested I front the money for a rental car and GM would most likely reimburse me. Wasn't willing to take that chance so now we're down to 1 car for the foreseeable future.

 

Have had 4 new cars in the past 7 years and EVERY one has had its fair share of issues. But none has just flatout failed to start and left us waiting for a tow. Really hope GM gets their ****** together and we can get back to enjoying our truck.

Dealer had the truck all day yesterday. Called me before they closed and kinda gave me an update.

 

They attempted to start the truck to move it to the service area. Wouldn't start. Tried jumping it and couldn't get it to start. 

Eventually got it running, and moved it.

They tried to start it again to move it into the service bay and it was dead again. Eventually got it jump started.

He told me my truck is "weird". Not very reassuring to hear, but I'm obviously aware there is an issue somewhere, duh.

 

Checked the battery, all connections, computers and everything is 100% and showing fine. Didn't give me exact error codes when I asked him, but did mention that the truck was saying low voltage somewhere. 

 

Told me it's running fine now and I could pick it up. I read him the BSCM bulletin since I park on an incline and mentioned that could have POSSIBLY been my cause and he said it very well could have caused the battery to die. I told him nothing was left on, but he kept asking if I maybe left a light on or something. I mentioned that the truck has a battery saver function built in and the lights will auto shutoff for that very reason. He said "oh yea you're right". 

 

He asked if I wanted to pick it up and I told him unless he could assure me it wasn't going to fail on me and that everything is fixed that I wasn't comfortable taking it home without some further diagnosing. He offered to put it on a Parasitic machine?? to see if any of the computers are draining the battery overnight and he'll call me today.

    • You must have that upgraded gvw package which is only available or at least was in 2025 with the diesel engine for the 3/4 ton and that gave the truck physically the larger 12.0 ring gear rear diff and the 3500 rear spring pack. There is a difference in what the diff housing looks like externally as one tell tale and also your truck should have the upper overload spring pack and the frame pads that the pack goes up against.    The pressure the tpms system kicks the alarm in on a stock setting truck, that is a good question and was just from what I recall but I doubt I made any notes on it as I knew for the rear that it was not at all what I was after regardless either. Being that you have a diesel and if running on stock tires the minimum pressure on an empty truck seems to be around 50 psi from hearing of those that have weighted the front axle but the rear axle is very similar in weight to a gas truck and again a near empty truck on the rear could go down to 35 pounds at minimum. However the weigh scale is the proper way to know for sure as a guide.    As to changing the readings on the dash from metric to the US measuring system, oh yes that is done easily but what I was attempting to explain was that I can't pick and choose items I want to have in US and those I still want in the metric system at the same time as its either all or none. For example lets say you drove into Canada and switched your dash over to metric so your speedometer read in km an hour, well then your reading kilopascals on your tpms readout and your wife looks over and says what the hell is that saying in the tpms screen and you say "darned if I know, I think its Chinese" !
    • This is partly why I decided to have switched over to Amsoil SS as a way of hopefully preventing the buildup of the sludge/carbon on the pistons and clogging of the oil control rings and the carbon that would cause the compression rings to stick in their grooves as well as stay cleaner up top of the heads in the valve train in the first place, an oil that has tested better by third party testing over typical shelf oil and also doing my best to run relatively short OCI. However in saying that I don't think there is any way to easily prove the oil I was using prior allowed for a buildup at the OCI I was doing, nor in the other direction to make claims the Amsoil is keeping everything clean either. There really isn't a window into the engine is there to know anything for certain even if oil samples were taken for example that showed still healthy oil being dropped out of the oil pan other than engine tear downs that extensive and expensive testing of oils does to actually visually see what is really going on inside the engine. I wish there was some easy method of seeing what is going on but I don't happen to be aware of that if there is.  
    • My truck is a ¾ ton but my placard also says 80 for the rear tires, I think I might have the upgraded suspension to the 3500 series maybe.   I put my air down to 60 and the light was still on, and there was no way I was putting over 60 psi in the rear empty and not towing because I knew the actual number Toyo gave me and I didn't wanna ruin the center of my tires!   And you actually can change it in the settings from metric or is and it will show kph or mph then when you go into your tire settings it will be either psi or kpa, but it would be nice to just change it directly on the tire psi page

    • We drove about 15 minute east today to visit a friend and saw a steep increase in price in the same county. About 50 cents a gallon steepper.
