We have 2500 miles on it and it has never gone into that regen mode or notified us that it has. I even had the dealer run the service bulletin update and we cannot get it to do so unless it is doing it silently and does not notify the driver. Any ideas? How can I tell if it has completed any of these cycles or if there is a problem until one happens as a result of no regens?

It does not notify you. You might notice a smell, and you will suddenly get crap fuel mileage, easily seen on your 25 Mike mpg estimate. It Regens every tank of fuel I believe, it has for all three tanks on mine. It does not run different while doing a Regen, and no notifications normally.

Not sure about GM but at work we have a fleet of Ford 2500 6.7L and ours idle high during regen and notifies you on dash with a blowing image symbol. We drive them mainly in the city and symbol alerts us it's time to take a run on the freeway.

Some of our drivers ignored the regen enterally and within 3 years $7,800 to replace filters and parts.

It won’t notify you. On my 2015 my rpm’s at idle would go up and I’d get crap mileage. It would have a dead pedal too.

 

y 2020 seems to be a bit different but I’ve only had 1 regen I know of so far, it was around 800-900 miles. I could smell it and noticed the crap fuel mileage. I didn’t notice a bump up in idle rpm, or a dead pedal.

 

GM has said in the past, their thought is that the truck should regen without the driver noticing.

 

I plan on getting a Banks iDash, if you have one of those, it will tell you when it’s in regen, as well as dpf soot level, etc... pretty useful.

Yea, the regens on the new ones are pretty undetectable. On my 2014, the higher idle was always noticeable, but I have no clue when my 2020 regens.

It won't notify you unless it is having troubles getting successful regened. (and gives the 'keep driving' message)

 

You dealer can connect to it and tell you how many regens it has done. 

 

If the regen happens when you are on the highway, it's really easy to miss the signs -- unless you are running on a steady pull and happen to be looking at one of the fuel economy screens.

2020 is damn near impossible to tell if it is doing a regen.

My '18 was slightly more noticeable, but much more frequent if doing only short runs.

city or short runs in the '18  regen could happen as often as 150mi, or my longest was 710mi.

My 2020 the shortest (all city) was 525mi, been averaging 750mi between.

I regenerated  on my drive home from St Louis and the only noticable thing was crap gas mileage.  This was around the 800 mile mark

I have 2800 miles and mine has done 3 regens, each occurring every 800ish miles. The only reason i know is because i use the torque pro app with a bluetooth OBD dongle. I added some custom programs which tell me the soot level and regen status. The custom programs are from a guy on youtube, Chad Ivan. He created the programs based on the small Duramax but it has worked great on the 6.6. The only thing i notice different when the truck is in regen is the instant fuel economy. Normally, when coming to a stop, the reading is 99mpg. During regen, it was 30 to 40mpg. I would have no idea otherwise.

I've noticed that too.

 

I also find that if I'm watching one of the fuel economy graph screens, and am running on a 'mostly level' cruise, that the instantaneous fuel economy will run somewhere around 10 mpg less than when not in regen. 

 

I don't track frequency anymore, but when I was they were about 400 mile intervals. More frequent than my LML, but they were shorter duration. 

 

Exhaust also sounds different, but that's tough to notice unless at parking lot speeds.

 

Currently somewhere over 25,000 miles.

Yep 2020 trucks you dont notice it, about the only thing I think I've noticed is the brakes dont seem as easy to stop the truck during a regen.  Mileage is probably the biggest give away your in regen.

2nd regen today.  Noticed it on the way to work this morning, crappy gas mileage while cruising on flat road.  Off pedal it would barely make 80 mpg which was a dead giveaway

My new 2021 3500 just did its first regen at 813 miles,I was in regen for 31 miles and stopped regen at 844 miles. I had the MPG screen up and I dropped from 17 to 8-10 MPG during the regen. My 2018 L5p would regen between 250 nd 600 miles and would be in regen for 17-20 miles.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
