Can't Decide

Well, I've decided it's time to part ways with my 2018 Silverado 1500.  My truck has the 6.2L and the 8-speed.  The transmission in my truck has been a nightmare since 455 miles.  That's when it developed "the shudder".  After finally having that fixed, my transmission started shifting hard from first to second gear, second to first gear, clunking, hesitating, etc, etc.  It's all the same things that affect many 8-speed owners on this forum.  My truck also shakes when in Park and idling and has now developed a new issue where when it shifts from first to second gear the first time I take it out, it goes into almost a false neutral.  The RPM's go up but the truck doesn't grab second gear right away.  That was kind of the last straw for me.  I've brought it to the Dealer many times and voiced my issues.  Escalating to GM Customer Care is useless as I've done that twice.  According to everyone, my truck is operating as designed.  I've been doing a TON of research on trucks and have driven just about all the brands, except for Nissan.  I've owned nothing but Chevrolet since purchasing my first truck roughly 12 years ago.  I guess I am somewhat brand loyal, but right now I have no issues moving into something else.  So...here is the point of my topic.  I've narrowed it down to two trucks:

1) 2020 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro -  Pro's: Extremely reliable; great transmission; sounds great, lower price tag

Con's - Dated design; horrible fuel economy; low towing weight; barely any technology offered

2) 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 LTZ w/ 6.6L gas engine - Pro's: I love the look; rides great for HD truck; shifts smoothly; great towing numbers; incredible technology

Con's: It's a first year truck and new engine (bugs?); I've read people have had steering issues at highway speeds; my current truck has

made me gun-shy to own another GM product; higher price

OK.  There it is.  I'm opening up the flood gates for everyone's opinion.  I know this is a GM forum, so the majority will lead to the 2500.  However, I really want to pick the right truck here.  I simply won't own another truck that has cylinder deactivation.  Hence why I've chosen these two.  While I do some trailering (dirt bikes, small boat, occasional enclosed trailer w/golf cart, etc.), my towing needs are not sky-high.  I can't afford to trade the next one in early.  Whatever I get I have for 10+ years.  Help me make the right decision!  Thanks.

I have a 2015 Yukon Denali with the 6.2 and the 8 speed. My wife is the main driver and she says it drives fine I believe the shutter is caused by the cylinder deactivation. My truck just went out of warranty and I plan on purchasing a programmer to turn off cylinder deactivation. The two trucks you mentioned are both good choices. The 2500 is probably a better long term vehicle.Im on my 5th HD and keep them to around 200,000 miles with no problems.

Cant understand why anyone cross

Shop a Tundra that is ancient regarding technology, gets terrible gas mileage, steers and rides like a 20 year old truck. I get your frustration with your present truck but you would be bored and unha3poy with a Tundra. I have had both.

Some people like 20 year old tech and don't want gadgets that break and just want a mechanical truck! That was me and why I have a WT model with blue tooth and a back up camera. That's all the tech and fancy stuff in my 2018. I wanted a truck! Not a fancy plush luxury vehicle with a bed.

Hey I'm with you on not being too high tech or over optioned and over priced! My last truck was a 16' crew cab 2500 wt. The one I just bought is an LT. My comments are more directed at the fact he is cross shopping a half ton compared to a 3/4 ton and the Toyota is not just simple it is very dated. It is lost in the year 2000.  Toyota is not in the game in full size truck market as a result. Cars are another story.

I had a 2010 Tundra that I bought new and sold last year for a 2019 Silverado 1500.

I loved my Tundra, they are great trucks and still look great. But yes, so outdated. And that’s not even including the tech side of things which is way behind too.

Last year when I was looking at new trucks I test drove the new Tundra’s and I was pretty disappointed. I felt like my 2010 was much better especially the interior. I expected a lot more and didn’t feel like I was getting an upgrade from a 10 year newer vehicle.

And 2020 is no different. But if you want a new truck that’s not really any different from back in 2007, get a tundra :)

I’d get the 2500.

Thanks for the replies.  I totally understand the Tundra is a dated truck.  The appeal of the Tundra, for me anyways, was its reliability.  Many of my friends have them, most with over 200,000 miles, and have had minimal issues with them.  We have tested both vehicles extensively and decided to go with a 2500 LT with the 6.6L gas engine.  For the kind of towing we do, a diesel would be overkill.  I will be placing the order for the truck next week.  Hoping to have it sometime in March.

Thank you.

You won't regret it.

One thing for sure, if many of your friends have a Tundra, they account for 75% of Tundra sales the past 10 years! ?

Keep us posted on your truck order process. Don't forget to post pics when it arrives!
