Did some poking around. Looks like some additive drop out which can happen for a few reasons. None of which are problematic. BTW I found references to Mobil 1 bottles with the same residue.

VOA's show some very high additive levels. Third in line in fact and a good deal more than other Full Synthetics. Are you familiar with the term 'saturation'? Example. I stir sugar into a cold glass of water a teaspoon at a time. It will take several teaspoons and remain dissolved. But at some point then next one drops to the bottom of the glass. A point of saturation has been breached. That sugar falling out will not lower the level of sugar in the water already in solution. I just wouldn't worry about it.

It can also happen of the bottles sit for an extended period of time.

Silly as this may sound. Pennzoil bottles being yellow provide great contrast.

The saturation of motor oil with a motors by products is another reason I do shorter OCI's.

Once satureated the motor by products end up in the motor.

My thinking.

That's not what I'd call sludge. I've seen that to some extent in my 5 qt. jugs, in  ALL brands I've used, but not anything like in the video. From what I've seen over on BITOG, it's common on most all oils, if not all oils. They even mention Redline and Amsoil

I’ll be doing an oil change next couple of weeks and will be checking mine. Amsoil Signature Series containers are black so I’ll be using a flashlight but shouldn’t be that difficult to spot any type of residue since is pretty clear anyway. No matter what I find, I’ll definitely be reporting back on that.

You’ve got a point there especially with these DI engines. Currently, I’m doing 4K mile OCI’s with Amsoil and filter at $100 every change, I’ve contemplated using the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum every 3k because I idle and run short distances often which apparently burns the oil up much faster. “Still contemplating”, I’ve got lots of Amsoil Signature Series left over from last two purchases, just don’t like switching from something that’s working very well for me.

Here is a sample from my wife’s car with this oil. 5w-30 though

Not as much moly or boron as I would have guessed. Down the middle add package. Nice! Thanks Bob. Now I have a reference point.

Odd note on this sample. Viscosity of this 5W30 at 100 C is lower than the Red Line 0W20 (9.1)

You know what’s interesting. The sample on 2/7/17 and the one before are ultra plat as well and the moly is high. I’m wondering if their additive package is not consistent. The others are Quaker state ultimate durability. What do you think?

I was wondering the same

Grumpy, do you have anything from Redline or Amsoil to compare it to?

The quarts at Walmart cost more than Amsoil, I would’ve thought at the least Pennzoil would be somewhat cheaper than Amsoil especially since everyone thinks Amsoil is so much more expensive.
