Best Waterproof Hard Tonneau?

Recommended Posts

I know, a million Tonneau cover threads. But one issue is more important to me and that is a hard cover that is darn close to Waterproof. I have the GM Rev cover which is a rebranded backflip mx4. It has its benefits but it fails so miserably at being waterproof I'm thinking of selling it for peanuts to someone who doesn't need waterproof and starting over.

I go camping and hunting a fair bit so I have all my stuff in the bed so keeping it dry is pretty important to me. I am used to a leer topper cap that never let in a drop.

I also live in the snow belt so want a hard folding cover as I think that works better in the snow than a retracting, rolling or soft cover.

So shoot me some suggestions. Nothing with drain tubes or gutters like the bakflip P.O.S. I spent $1000 on my truck right now.

I like the looks of the Lomax and weather tech covers, and originally almost bought the fold a cover g4.

I'm thinking the leer hf350m is going to be one of the best at water proof. It sits up on top of the bed rails and has no drain tubes.

My old 17 sierra had the GM tri.fold hard cover and never a drop of water in it. It was more bulky though and also say in top of the bed as opposed to rails in the bed.

Yeah I saw that last year but the leer one had just come out so I was "leery" of it. Do you have one?

I bought it but was backordered for over a month so I cancelled my order and got the GM REV hard holding. It leaks the corners as well as on one seam. Its currently getting replaced with a brand new one from the dealership.

Hopefully it works out. I like that the REV folds up below the rear view mirror camera on that back so they view isnt obstructed. I believe the Leer one folds up taller blocking the camera.

If this new one doesn't work out, I will be getting the leer

I’m pretty happy with my Extang Encore. I know you mentioned that you didn’t want any that have the gutters & drain tubes, which this has, but it sits on top of the bed rails so between that & the gutters, it stays pretty dry in the bed. I will get some water in when power washing but that’s about it.

It’s not folding but another option is the one piece fiberglass type. My previous truck had one & it stays bone dry under those. They’re very secure too, which is nice if you’re keeping hunting stuff in the bed. The tri-fold types are fairly easy to break into.

I put the ReTrax motorized roll-up with remote on my 15 Sierra. Plus, the gasket around the tailgate. It was waterproof. I liked it, but it ain't cheap. Didn't do anything when I traded for the Duramax dually because of the hitch. I put my toolbox on the new one and haven't decided if I'll do a cover or not yet. Only got 175 miles on it.......still have time to decide!?

Diamondback covers are extremely waterproof and very secure for your camping gear! Plus with the covers you can load stuff on top of them.Mine is the HD version and can load up to 1600 lbs on top! They are one of those covers that you either hate or love. I really love the rugged look on the AT4.

My rev hard folding was replaced already at the dealer since it's leaking right through the panels, soaking the teather straps and dripping in the bed. The replacement cover leaks worse than the original one and came with a torn seam. At this point I don't think my dealer will be very receptive to another replacement because they said leaking water isn't a defect under warranty since they aren't waterproof.

I'm considering the Extang Encore as well.  Like you, the main reason is the accessibility from the from of the cover.  Are you aware of any others (besides the Fold-a-Cover) that have this functionality?  Is removal of the entire cover for full access to the entire bed as easy as they make it look in the videos?  Also, do you know if a headache rack can be installed with the Extang Encore?

Fell in love as soon as you posted this picture and then saw that it costs 2 grand..... Now I'm sad again.

Batman, yes the price is out there for sure, however to really use my truck the way I wanted it was the best for me.  Actually I found this lid years ago and had planned on getting it when I upgraded trucks so it was already in the budget!  Carr a lot of expensive hunting and fishing items so being dry and secure was the most important things to me. They do offer a 10% military discount, helps a little bit.

Good luck with your search!!

I've never had a problem with the OEM GM covers.  And by OEM GM I mean the actual GM ones not the "business partner" made by an aftermarket company sold through GM like the cover you have currently.

I believe I saw similar models where the front opened up, while I was researching tonneau covers, but I don’t recall any names at the moment.
The two big deciding factors for me was the front access panel and ease of removal, which this does both well. Once both rear & front panels are folded over the middle, the whole unit lifts right out. There’s two retention clips that have to be unlatched first but that’s it. Very easy process.
If I have any complaint, it would be that these types of covers are fairly easy to break into but that’s not exclusive to the Encore.

Not sure about the compatibility with the headache racks. I guess it would depend on the design of the rack. It would have to mount on the bedrails outside of the cover and the lower bars/framework would have to be high enough for the Encore to clear when flipped up from the front.

Thanks for the feedback.

I was getting ready to pull the trigger then I went through the fitment page on the Back Rack website only to find the Encore is not compatible with Back Racks ?

I'll do some more digging on other headache racks but I have a feeling I'll end up back to square one on the tonneau search!
