Hi guys, I have a 2017 GMC Sierra Elevation with stock Wrangler SR-A size 275/55r20 (measuring 31.0" x 10.09" based on spec).

I am in the market for new tires.  Considering Falken Wildpeak AT3W size 285/60r20 (measuring 33.5" x 11.2" based on spec) also considering Toyo Open Country AT3 (measuring 33.5" x 11.5" based on spec)

I am wondering if these will fit without level, lift or trim.  Lots of great info on these forums but seems like everyone at least levels to fit a larger tire without any rubbing.  Appreciate any feedback.

Bigger (Taller) Tires are about Ground Clearance or (Wider) more traction. In the snow you want a tall skinny tire to get through the snow to the pavement as quickly as possible. For Mud you want a wider tire to ride on top as long as you can. 

 

A lift kit is to prevent "getting stuck up to the body" and to add taller tires to add more ground clearance, But who it take that gorgeous Black beauty in the Mud on purpose?... That's what a Tacoma is for. I am for the levelling kit (Just got my 2020 GMC 1500 Black Elevation with X31 and Duramax) so I can use my truck for it's intended purpose Towing and Hauling. If I want to go Mudding I'll buy a side by side or older rig.... I am also thinking about the 4" lift kit to put on a little bigger tire as I do hunt and sometimes go off road, but not mudding. 

 

That being said I could just buy a side by side as they will handle a Deer and me easily... No worries about trashing the black beauty... GMC got this one right... Love the 24+ MPG and I emphasize the Plus....

got my 2020 gmc elevation x31 , ordered a 6inch rough country lift, i wanted to run my factory wheels but i want it to go on a 35x12.50 Cooper SST Pro ‘ has anyone tried this rig ? Would it fit ? Im concern bout the UCA rubbing the tire

👍nice! I was thinking about doing the 2 inch leveling on a 2015 gmc Denali, don’t like how it sits at angle with front end lower than rear.  Do you guys think this would improve? stance with stock wheels and tires.

All of this assumes you're running OEM wheels with a 28mm offset, like your Elevation wheels. 

 

The biggest thing you have keep in mind though is the P metric tire sizes mean absolutely nothing to tire companies. So, you have to look at the specific physical measurement of each tire. For example, 295/60R20 equates to 33.9" x 11.66," BUT a Nitto Trail Grappler 295/60R20 is 34.45" x 12.13" while a Nitto Ridge Grappler in 295/60R20 is 33.94" v 11.77." That specific tire definitely fits without trimming, based on my research. The Trail Grappler requires light trimming to plastic behind the front valence and requires cutting about half of the front mud flap off and removing the steel mud flap bracket. Based on my research and actually reaching out to some guys online that are running 35x12.50, 35x11.50, and the 34.45" x 12.13" Trail Grappler, all on non-AT4 Sierras with a 2 inch front level, you can fit that 295/60R20 without trimming as long as it's 33.94" v 11.77" or smaller. With that said, I believe narrower tires such 285 or 11.5 are much less likely to rub. With the 295 and wider, some folks have said you'll need a 1/4 inch spacer for the front wheels to clear the upper control arm. I've ordered a set just in case. I'm trying to decide between the 285/65R20 and 35x11.5 Ridge Grapplers for my 2 inch leveled 2019 SLT X31.

 

Finally, as if each different tire model of a same P metric size (295/60R20, for example) wasn't a different size in real life, the physical sizes listed by the manufacturer or tire store websites is for the unloaded tire. This means that once the tire is mounted on your truck and is supporting your truck's weight, the tire's dimensions will be different, usually smaller in height and wider in width from sidewall to sidewall. For example, my factory Bridgestone Revo 3's are 275/60R20, they should be 33" x 10.8". On my truck and filled with 38lbs of air, they measure 32" x 12.75." So, they're nearly 2 inches wider than their spec.

Thanks for the good info! I'm looking for tires on my 21 elevation 4x4 on stock rims. Just wondering what you decided on for tires? I'm thinking of either a 285/65/20 or 295/60/20 in a Toyota open country AT3.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.    
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
    • 286,740 Mile Services   8/6/2026   New AC Compressor. Refrigerant oil and dye, evacuate and charge system.  New exhaust system from cat back.  New Iridium plugs plus replace #3 coil Repair/rewire headlamp wiring (passenger side) and replace all forward bulbs. Polish lenses of both assemblies.  Pull rear rotors, clean and adjust parking assembly. Inspect, clean and grease front calipers. Check pads and shoes.  4 wheel power bleed of brake system. Dot 4 Reset idle speed 50 rpm higher New Serpentine belt.    Will need new pads in the rear in about 5K more miles.    Tax Title and License out the door just short of a grand.    AC clutch had bitten the dust. 1 year warranty on the pick and save replacement. Thing will make a Polar Bear cry Uncle.  He spent quite some time on the wiring. It was in the harness and he does nothing half. I got off cheap. I have considerable more light down the road. Sylvania Silver Star replacements.  Gas seal between the porcelain and shell of plug #3 was blown, cooked the coil. That was the cold miss.  Love the new exhaust. I can sneak into the neighborhood again.  Nice to have a working parking brake again. Belle Tire never got it done. That was disappointing.    This was one of her bigger bills and still way cheaper than a payment even given the oil consumption. This thing cost me under a hundred a month in repairs and normal routine costs. What is my incentive to replace it? 🤔           
    • hello I recently bought a 2012 gmc 1500 with a 5.3 and have a AFM disabler on it I'm interested in doing a cam but I'm worried if I remove the AFM system I will fail smog does anyone have info if they are able to detect that or a work around to it (not talking about hot smogging) please let me know thank you
