What Engine Oil Do You Use

Recommended Posts

HAPPY Hangover July 5th. LOL

Looking at changing my engine oil for the first time. No the dealer has been changing the trucks whole life since i have had it from 31K miles. Just a GM tech buddy of mine is doing the 90K all fluids change etc so inquiring. I haven't bought oil for any of my rigs since i am getting too old/hurt too much after doing this type of stuff. Wife yells at me for doing it when i hobble around in pain after.

With the above said what oil you all put in your rigs now days. 2006 Silverado 82K miles on it with the 5.3 Flex engine.

Pennzoil Plat or Ultra Plat

Mobil 1

Amsoil

just to name a few. No particular order

Actually you could blindfold yourself while in Wally on the oil aisle and grab any synthetic brand off the shelf and be ok. imo

If you also are buying trans fluid and diff, I'd lean towards Amsoil

IMO, what changes when you choose an oil is the OCI length.

The same brand can have several different formulations that run the full spectrum of what's possible.

Now that Phillips has bought Red Line, that brand alone formulates everything from NexGen recycled to virgin PAO/POE's.

Anything with a Dexos licence will get the job done. Ability is not the issue. The issue is; for what service length.

Pesonally? AMSOIL SS then Red Line HP then Pennzoil Ultra Platinum

Filter wise I'm a Purolator Pure One guy. I like my filters to actually filter.

Sometimes they are hard to find. The BOSS from Purolator is often easier to find.

They filter almost identically but the BOSS service life is longer and reflected in it's price.

AMSOIL Ea is my second choice. Mostly because is cost twice as much or more.

Only slightly less efficient than the Purolator.

Third choice is WIX Gold / NAPA. Not the platinum

Cheaper, less efficient but built well and for the majority close enough for horseshoes

There is no fourth choice IMHO

AS we are tossing opinions around

Trans, front and rear diff have AMSOIL signature swapped out at 24k miles. Engine recently got switched the AMSOIL XL. looking to do 5-6k OCI using AC Delco filter. Have a few here I stocked up on when they were 2 bucks each. I have always run OEM filters in my cars for years and never had an issue. Interested in the Amsoil filter, but at 5-6k OCI, is there really any benefit over OEM?
