I've read a few things in the owners manual and saw a YouTube video of a Chevy 2500 that had the high idle feature. I have a pretty highly optioned 2500 AT4 Diesel and can't seem to get it to work. 

 

Anyone else have the feature and been able to get it to work?

Set the parking brake, hold the cruise button down a few seconds and release. Works ok for me. Check your window sticker/ build sheet. Its  $200 option. The dealer should be able to set it up if you dont have it since its software only.

Yeah I don't see it on the window sticker. I'll look into having the dealer set it up

No rush, but if you get a chance can you take a picture of what its listed as on your window sticker? My dealer hasn't been much help. They keep trying to tell me that I don't have PTO and I keep trying to explain to them that's not what i'm referring to. 

 

They don't seem to understand that Elevated Idle, Fast Idle, and Power Take-off are all different features.

Honestly the only thing I have used it for is if I have to make a stop during a regen.

Regen only works based upon MPH not idle speed unless it is a commanded regen via the Tech-II tool.

The high idle will help keep the exahust temps up though. I find it lets the truck finish the regen when I start driving again as oppsed to ending early and having the truck restart from a cold exhaust. Maybe its all in my head and I just need a reson to use the $200 option. Idk.

I was told it can't be added when i asked my dealer last winter

The elevated idle will keep exhaust temps up in cold weather to prevent wet stacking 

I try not to just idle at anytime 

just shut it down 

also a no idle law in CT

my truck does not have that option.

however, the overnight temp the other day was down to about 35*. I remote started the truck. When I came out to it, it was definitely in a high idle state

There are two ''increased idle 'different functions.  One is standard, the other is optional

 

In addition, the ecm will also sometimes adjust idle for alternator charging, ac compressor, high engine temp or in regen to keep exhaust from cooling. (and there may be other reasons....)

 

 

Elevated Idle  is standard on all the dmax's since 2004.5 LLY.  It needs to be enabled in settings, but then will  automatically engage if the correct conditions are met. It drags the torque converter to create additional load, to warm the transmission as well as the coolant.  

Since it has automatic engage it is great during cold weather when the truck is started by remote. I find that elevated idle will result in the highest transmission temps my trucks will have doing rural daily driver chores in winter weather.

 

Elevated Idle
The engine has a cold temperature high idle feature which elevates the engine idle speed from base idle to 1050 to 1100 rpm when outside temperatures are below 0 °C (32 °F), and the engine coolant temperature is below 65 °C (150 °F). This feature enhances heater performance by raising the engine coolant temperature faster.
To turn this feature on or off, see Vehicle Personalization 

 

[ Edit to add: My current truck will kick in elevated idle at temps higher than my previous ones. (an LLY and a LML).  Despite the 32*F indicated in the manual I find this one will kick in at temps somewhere between 38F and 42F on the dash display]

 

When the engine is started, it will slowly ramp up to the high idle speed after a delay of a few seconds up to approximately two minutes. For this method to work properly there must be no throttle or brake pedal faults.

 

The engine idle speed will return to normal once the following conditions are met: 

. Engine coolant temperature reaches 65 °C (150 °F).
. Air intake temperature reaches 0 °C (32 °F).
The high idle speed will be temporarily interrupted and the engine speed will return to normal if any of the following conditions occur:
. The brake pedal is applied.
. The accelerator pedal is pressed.
. The transmission is shifted out of P (Park) or N (Neutral).
. Vehicle speed is detected.
Once these inputs are removed, the engine idle speed will slowly ramp back up to high idle after the normal delay, if the conditions for engine coolant temperature and air intake temperature are still met. 

 

 

High Idle / Fast Idle

 

The other one is optional, and is operated by the cruise buttons - as in the video above.

Sometimes called High idle. Sometimes called Fast Idle.

 

Primary use if to keep accessories (and PTO is equipped) drive running faster.  Its'not intended create heat the way the elevated idle does. 

Fast Idle requires getting into the truck to activate.

 

2020 dmax manual calls it Fast Idle.

If equipped, this system can be used to increase the engine idle speed.

 

Fast Idle control will be enabled when the following conditions are met:

Fast/High idle is slightly higher rpm than Elevated idle.  I've alway assumed it was to aid in identifying why the truck was not at 'normal' idle. 

 

When the truck is in regen, it will idle at higher rpm than normal - but not as high as these two functions.

The trucks will also jump up 200 RPM or so on a cold start, after about 20 seconds.  this generally lasts for about 30 seconds to a minute.  It aids in getting sensors and such warmed up.  I only notice it when the outside temps are below 50 degrees.

I know all of the documents state this, but is it 100% accurate? I have the "Fast Idle" option and I use it often as my truck is my mobile office and I idle alot at work. Sometimes while using the Fast Idle it definately smells like my truck is doing a regen when your near the back, even if I haven't moved it in a while. Thoughts?

    • Thanks!  I figured as such; GM and other manufacturers have used standard parts and harnesses across trim levels and such for decades.  I pulled the blank accessory cover off of my commuter van (a 2016 or so Chevy 15-passenger) years ago and found the plug for a USB outlet.  It wasn't connected to anything, though (I tried swapping in an outlet from another van).  I was a GM Tech years ago (late-90s) and was pretty familiar with my 2006.  I might be wrong, but I view newer vehicles (pretty much anything made in the past 20 years) as being a lot more plug and play.  Meaning, more unused wires and plugs unless you have the Mack Daddy of vehicles.    
    • not all plugs will be used.  gm uses more generic harnesses that support most/all options, and if your truck doesn't have a specfiic option, the plug won't be used (commonly will have a dummy insert in the plug , or it'll be taped up, but some may just be left as is).  But it's sldo possible some p.o. has installed the wrong/cheaper parts that aren't correct for your vehicle...
    • First off, I'm not trying to just get easy advice/fixes for the issues I've noticed so far.  I'll be combing through the site via searches and such, and if past experiences are any indication, should find what I need.  For the sake of conversation, though, I figured I'd post the handful of things I've noticed in the 12 hours since buying my 2010 SLE CCSB.     Indicator lights: Airbag and TPMS.  The tire pressures aren't reading for any of the wheels, so I'm pretty certain the sensors were either removed, are damaged, or are otherwise inoperable.  I used to mount and balance tires 25 years ago but am pretty much ignorant when it comes to TPMS.  My 2006 didn't have the sensors and this might be the fourth vehicle I've owned that does.     Radio: Rear speakers aren't working.  I removed the driver's side rear door panel and checked the speaker and wiring.  I also removed the sill and b-pillar covers to check the wiring.  A few minutes of Google Fu showed that this is potentially a head unit issue.    Switches: Power mirrors don't turn left/right.  I ordered replacement driver's door switches that should arrive tomorrow.  The windows and locks work but it was only about $20 for all of them.  The driver's side rear window switch lets the window down but won't put it back up.  I think the passenger rear doesn't work at all.  In the coming days/weeks, I'll break out my multimeter to check all of that.   Unknown wiring harness: There's a box attached to the front driver's side of the engine compartment, right where the second battery shelf is located.  There are three plugs, one of which looks like it fits a standard headlight-style bulb (9007 or similar).  It doesn't look like it's plugged into anything.  I'll do some digging and if I don't see anything elsewhere on the site, post some pictures here.   Unknown plugs on brake booster: There are at least two female plugs on the brake booster that aren't being used.  I think it might be a replacement/aftermarket, so maybe those are used for a different application, as there don't seem to be any unplugged harnesses and no indicator lights are on.   Little squeaks when turning: Sounds almost like a bushing around the bed of the truck.  I'll have to pay close attention as I get more familiar with the truck.   Clunk on acceleration: possibly the infamous drivetrain clunk.  My 2006 had it and I'm just not familiar enough with this truck yet to fully grasp what it is.   Anyway, my apologies for the vague and all over the place post.  This truck is new to me, and it's been four years since I drove my 2006.  With 200k miles, I know I'll need to learn this truck quickly to avoid having any major issues, despite being confident it's got much more life to it.  My 2006 had nearly 320k on it when I parked it (nearly 300k of which I put on the truck), and it was still drivable then, though I suspected the head gasket might have blown.  I'd hoped to have that truck back by now, but it's gone forever, as I detailed in my reintroduction thread.
