Figured id lost this up here. Going to take in tomorrow night when I get home from this trip.

2020 Silverado Trailboss LT 5.3L 4x4 10k miles

So a few days ago i noticed a small hardly noticable whine. Didnt think much of it. So now im up in the mountains on vacation and the whine has gotten increasingly worse and now i have a knock (will post video).

The whine is heard from inside vehicle (only with windows down tho). The whine gets louder when you push the gas too.

The knock was only heard when i crawled under the truck to see where the whine was coming from. It appears as youll see from the video to come from where the oil plug/ filter is located. I cant isolate it.

I do not see any leaks anywhere. The plug appears to be dry/ no old oil around it. The filter itself is black but i dont see any oil drippings over the stickers on it. Oil level is good and looks good. All gauges are running normal too.

Dropping truck off Tuesday morning.

Anyone experienced this? Im really hoping i dont end up with a bad motor/ tranny. Ive heard when you do they just warranty the truck back?

UPDATE 11-10-2020

Went to dropped the truck off today and they didnt have my appointment scheduled so that was fun despite being called yesterday for confirmation AND having a text confirmation. either way still got it dropped off.

Of course it was whining really bad still and thankfully (i guess) knocking. the tech who took all my info down and everything started the truck up to get the info off plug so i took the time to show him the noise. He acknowledged there is a whine and he did hear the knocking too. Explained that both are new and i have never heard either before.

I made a post about this months ago when i first got the truck. but i took the time to tell him i have having a low RPM shutter/ vibration. He immediately came back with its probably a torque convertor shutter? i havent heard of this before or seen anyone mentioned it? but regardless he acknowledged.

I also took the time to AGAIN address the backup camera brightness issue. Figured with time change it gets dark early enough they can easily test it in the low light and see how bright it gets

I didnt have any sort of timeline. But he said itd be looked at today. I will give them till tomorrow late afternoon before i call up there for an update.

in the mean time im driving around a Buick Envision. not really my speed or style but its peppy at least. Has cool heads up display too.

UPDATE-

Spoke with the tech person just now at 4pm. They havent even looked at my truck yet. Apparently their "heavy repair" side which is all engines, drive trains, etc. are way backed up. Couldnt tell me when they would even look at it.

he again mentioned well its probably just the torque shutter so itll be a quick like 3 hour fix.

I asked him to explain what that was to me. What he described it was that the current fluid/ additives the transmission has i guess doesnt have enough grip for when the truck is under no load (low rpm) so it slips a little. He said they fix it by draining the fluid and replacing it with a different one with more additives. Correct me if im wrong but isnt that what the 2016-2018 silverados had issues with? I have read several posts that the 2019-20s do not have that issue and that GM said they fixed the tranny issue?

I also asked is that what the whine/ knock is coming from? he said yeah most likely but we wont know till we do this.

I also mentioned the bulletin to him which he said hed have the guy look up.

my confidence in this dealership is already pretty low. I dont think the wrong fluid is going to cause an engine whine/ knock but maybe im wrong. Thoughts??

Imo it's the oil pump whining, my truck also has a whine but is nowhere near as loud and pronounced as yours is. Your tech sounds like he is talking about the fix they had for the 8 speed transmission shutter issues, which has nothing to do with what you're talking about imo. I would agree with your concern over the ability of your dealership currently when you bring it to them for engine knock and whine and they say lets change the trans oil. Not to mention the 20 models i would think would not come with the wrong trans oil seeing as this issue has been around for years now and is a 8 speed only problem.

No updates yet but i am going to call here around 4pm to see whats going on. If they cant get it in anytime soon i may call around to other dealers in the area.

I too am concerned. The transmission shutter on all accounts that i have heard is "fixed" and that these 19/20 trucks do not have that issue right now.

Definitely a little concerning how quickly he jumped on that and thought that it would fix the knock and whine which both are new and louder. Hopefully have some answers today we will see.

Whats the oil pump whining prognosis? Not heard about this issue yet

Update 11-12-2020 3pm.

I called over there today. The guy who helped me answered. Hes like oh um let me look into an update for you. Didnt you call yesterday? I was like no i called on tuesday and did not call yesterday so its been 2 days. Has it been seen yet?

Hes like oh im not sure we are just really backed up still. Im like okay well when do you think it'll actually be seen? If its gonna sit there for 2 weeks ill take it somewhere else... hes like well Yeah you absolutely can do that if youd like. Im like i dont want to but i also dont wanna be without my truck long term either. Hes like well ill look into it and see if its been seen or when they think they will see it.

Hes like well im sure its not gonna take long anyways since its just the transmission stutter anyways. I again explain no it had an engine knock and whine which i do not think is related. He was kinda quiet after that.

To be honest at this point im just about to say F%&k it. Let it sit there for 25 days. Give them the 5 day notice to fix it. And go lemon law route. I have lost faith in chevy. This is my 2nd silverado in A row and first ever brand new vehicle. I cant believe im having issues like this especially after my last silverado we nicknamed the ghost truck. Might be the route i go honestly. I love love love my truck but it is not worth the issues its currently causing me.

Also if its going to be a week before they see it im going to tell them i wanna exchange this suv for another truck

Oh boy here we go.... so the guy just called me and said trucks done...

He said they couldn't find the whine/ knock and that its normal operation of the vehicle -_- i just fricken knew it was going to be the answer too. Especially since its plain as day. The guys like yeah this techs really good too he woulda caught something. Im like my truck sounds like its fricken supercharger or electric but sure.

He said the shutter (which honestly isnt even a concern) is normal and cause i have all terrain tires on it.

Hes like well we update the camera though so we hooked you up there....

Gonna go pick it up drive it some and see what it sounds like. Might take it to another dealer if its still bad.

UPDATE 11-12-2020 7pm

So today was quite the day. And i couldnt be more annoyed!!

SO i went to the first dealership and picked up my truck. He basically said everything was fine, normal and operation as normal. I didnt seem to believe them but said whatever. He also said well the transmission shutter is only for the 8 speeds and you have the 10 speed so its probably just the tires. But we did fix the camera. He said that if anything else changes to just bring it back. So the chauffeur guy brings the truck into the service bay. PLAIN AS DAY you could hear the whinning as the truck came in. im like seriously? so i took truck. before i left lot called another dealer to drop it off.

First dealer said they didnt have a loaner so i called another who said they had one. of course it was farther away too.

Show up the tech guy, manager and a mechanic come out into the bay. I start truck up and there it is plain as day whining. They say what am i listening for? I give it some gas and say right there do you hear that. yes we do but its absolutely normal. They said that these new 2019-2021 trucks all make that whining with all the electronics and technology. I said okayyyy well why did it just start now after 10k miles? they said well its just breaking in. I also asked about the knock. he said i dont hear it. I said put your head under the truck. He said oh that is normal for sure. Im like how the heck is that normal??? they said all the new trucks are this way.

Then he continued to say well you have a warranty anyways, drive it and dont worry about it. Im like um wtf. I wanna keep this truck 10+ years if i can and im not about to grenade the engine on it or damage it long term. He also asked if the exhaust or engine was modified which i said no. Only bigger tires. hes like well also now that the trucks lifted higher and sits higher itll change the sound of it which is why its probably louder... im like no its been like this for 5k miles now. but whatever. I was so annoyed and they said they wouldnt look at it. So i left with it.

I bought this truck up in michigan so i called my buddys brother in law who owns the dealership. I asked if hes heard of this whine at all and he said no thats absolutely not normal at all and i need to take it somewhere else. Called the other dealer in town that didnt have loaner but they said they would set me up with one tomorrow afternoon. SO we will see. I am going to take it over there and have them look at it.

IF they also ignore me when i go home for a few weeks in december im taking the truck to my friend and have them look at it. he said he would hook me up if needed. im really hoping it doesnt come ot that but we will see what happens.

Right now i think the route im going to go is get to the 4 times/ 30 days i need in order to file a lemon law claim.

I have lost all faith in chevy

You will have an uphill battle, trying to lemon it imo because technically it is not broke or not operating.

Part of your issue is it looks like you bought your truck from another area, imo skip the local dealer trip and just go straight to who you bought the truck from. Tell them over the phone that the "it sounds normal to me" excuse will not work, be upfront with the guy right way, his dealer sold you the bum truck and his dealer should be the one that makes it right. This is the bad that comes with trying to save a grand or two traveling far away to buy something.

Well unfortunately its not that simple.

I bought the truck in michigan but currently live in north Carolina. I travel for work. So its not as simple as just driving a few hours its a full day drive there plus back home. Then id have to drive right back to eventually pick it up.

Yea didn't realize you were that far away, perhaps they could maybe call over to a local dealer so they don't give you the common "sounds good to me" line. Send that video link to your contact from the dealer you purchased the truck from and have them to do the work to get the service you deserve and need. You captured the sound pretty good in that link so i can't imagine them saying it is normal, it nearly sounds as if you have an actual gear driven timing chain or as you said it sounds like a supercharger whine almost, no way imo is it common. Have them pull a new truck off their lot or multiple and i bet none of them have a whine that loud or at all.

In anycase good luck and i hope you can get some satisfaction here.

    • Progress... sort of.   Intake is disassembled, spider is out, fuel lines removed. Used a torch on the stripped screw with the lower intake off, much easier when I've got the intake sitting on my workbench, I made it talk. Walked right out with a pair of vice grips once it was nice and toasty hot.   New parts are piling up on my service cart waiting to be installed. Distributor, temperature sensor, new gaskets, fuel line kit, themostat, water neck.   My new pickle is I don't want to spend $600 on a replacement spider. I'm not sure IT is bad. I'm probably splitting hairs. Or it's $300 to send mine away and another 3 weeks of the truck just sitting. I have half a mind to assemble everything with the old spider to see if I can get away with just replacing the fuel pressure regulator to be safe. The obvious issue was the gushing high pressure fuel line which will be replaced. Getting to the spider really isn't that hard, and now I know what I'm doing , swapping it would be a breeze should it absolutely need one. Stupid, or smart?   The part that gives me pause is replacing the distributor. Well, it's already out. And I didn't mark it, whoopsie! Engine was at TDC when I removed it, I know that, so upon correct reinstall the metal tip on the rotor should point to the TDC mark on the distributor because that's where it was pointing on the old distributor. Worst case I'm a tooth off and have to re-stab it.   But then, what? I assume the truck will start. It doesn't appear the timing can be set. Here's the problem: These distributors can't be rotated but a degree or two, by design. What I read is Cam ****** needs to be -2 to +2 degrees, ideally at 0 (and checked/set above 1000 rpm). There should be enough wiggle to get that properly set, but checking the reported value is another potential issue. My Actron 9185 scanner says it supports enhanced GM PIDs and Cam ****** is one of them but it's unclear that I'll be able to correctly see it over OBD 1.5. I can see why people end up junking these things with life left in them. They're an absolute nightmare with tweener-year diagnostics/electronics and unobtanium parts.   Fingers crossed it starts and idles nicely. There can be hope, right? I'ma buy a lottery ticket the same day just in case.   Next steps..DO IT. I have not installed an intake before so I've been reading and watching a lot. Some say NO RTV except on china walls, some say DO RTV on water ports but not fuel/air intake. 1/4 or 3/8 bead on China walls? I think my strategy will be, obviously, RTV china walls with overlap on the gasket corners. Chapstick-style RTV the water ports. Leave intake ports dry. The only set of intake gaskets I could find locally are Edelbrock performance gaskets (uh...for an asthmatic 190hp V6? LOL) so we'll see how they do.   #NoToolLeftBehind. It took an hour, but my recovery mission for my deep 10mm socket was successful. It had rolled down the bellhousing and wedged itself between what I think are the fuel lines? I couldn't see it at all, but with a junk antenna I had laying around, I blindly went poking/sweeping for it, heard it clink, raised the truck, and caught a sliver glimpse of chrome with a flashlight way up there in Narnia. I had pushed it farther along the lines holding it captive, but within access of severely improvised tools, poking and cursing at it to finally knock it free to where I could get a fingertip on it to bring it home.    Not much to see.

    • It wouldn’t have happened if the government hadn’t mandated outrageous fuel mileage standards. It does very little for the consumer. It adds cost. Back during Covid there was a chip shortage. They gave a rebate for your truck if it didn’t have the chip to turn on cylinder deactivation. It was 50$ because at best you may see 1/2 a mile increase per gallon. Splitting hairs each fuel mileage trick wasn’t mandated. The government doesn’t do the engineering work and say use this until it’s already in use and they like it. The fuel mileage was mandated. And those add ons the results. There’s a mandate and they are the results.
