i got rid of mine, i just wasn't catching much.  5000 miles i had maybe a table spoon full.

i did switch to the non DexOS oil , redline 5w-30 full synth.  and a 175 thermostat. not sure if being 20-30 degrees cooler is affecting the reduced oil consumption.

Nope. 132,000 trouble fee. Uses none per 5K OCI so what would I catch other than moisture? Don't see the need in my case.

130k almost got ya Grumps!  I have a catch can catching 90% water....I sleep better at night!  Oh and by the way, I am coking the valves and we shall see if I can even get this slug to 200k!  Going to be stretch imo…………….

your catching water... JUst curious but...

 

 what is the climate like in the area you drive? 

 

do you make  short driving trips during the day?

 

is there a yellow snot like substance under the oil fill cap?

I've ran an elite engineering one on my 2018 5.3 since new and I'm blown away every time I do an oil change how much is in the catch can. I do an oil change every 4,000-5,000 KM

The selection of motor oil has more to do with valve deposits than where the fuel is injected. IF you choose the wrong oil then yes port feed fuel with detergents is a big help. But if the right oil is chosen then there is no need to clean what isn't there...is there? 

 

 

A PCV system has two primary functions. 1.) Keep crankcase pressure low 2.) Remove raw liquid from the gas stream. Oil separation. Most of what is caught in a catch can is condensed vapors of water, gas and oil. Without the can it would have remained a vapor in a well functioning system. 

 

The measure of the volume of oil vapor possible is the NOACK test. SN and SN Plus have a limit of 15% if memory serves me well. The DEXOS license lowers that limit to 13%. Some top shelf PAO/POE based oils have NOACK numbers half the SN spec. Some as low as the 5% range.

 Normal temperatures on intakes range from 600° to 800° F in the center of the head of a light duty job to 800°-1000° F for a heavy-duty application. At the seat face, those temperatures range from 200°-400° F on light duty engines, to 400°-600° F on heavy-duty engines. As with seat faces, the under head areas are relatively mild on both types — about 200°-300° F on light duty to 300°-400° F on heavy-duty jobs.

 

Nothing there hot enough to  coke motor oil. Fact is claims by Mobil state their oil is good for trips to 500F. Let that pause in the grey matter for a minute. 

 

The same detergents that prevent deposits on the underside of a 500F piston head will do likewise for the cold side of an intake valve a 100F cooler. That is in the liquid state should the system become overwhelmed or dysfunctional. It's the vapor state that becomes worrisome. In that state there is no detergent package present. 

 

Lastly note that vapor traffic and valve temperatures are LOAD DEPENDANT. Harder you whip it, the more vapor traffic and at a higher temperature the system will have to deal with. 

 

Take a ways? 1.) Lower the  NOACK the better. 2.) Lowest NOACK happen with Group IV and V base oils 3.) Lower the load the better. 4.) Better system maintenance. PVC replacement once in awhile. Change the oil at intervals that are not kissing the basement floor for TBN or allowed to rise above the TAN.

    • Folks, Have a great new 2026 WT  (std cab, 2.7/4WD) w/base 40/20/40 mech adj bench "fake buckets"  (with lower and upper center console) heavy vinyl seats.  Overall the seats are very comfortable and the vinyl is heavy and appears less likely to 'split out'. Am very tall (6'5")  + a bad back/osteporosis/former hyperparathyroidism so ease/range of movement is a bit restricted.  The truck rides a bit high and I use a nerf step bar w/my left foot to step in, then I put right foot/leg in, drag my butt in  & get seated.  Worked fine in my 2018 RAM quadCab. But I end up dragging my butt over the left raised sidecushsion area of vinyl seat, and due to texture there's fair amount of traction on slide inward.  (ArmorAll didn't improve.) If the seat were even ~1/2" - 3/4" lower it'd be helpful, but base seats just have the forward/backward underseat bail and the side lever for tilt which really doesn't affect seat height.   I really don't want to 'de-puff' the left side sidecushion forming the  fake 'bucket'. I know one company sells 'seat elevator blocks':  but is there a simple way of lowering the height of the driver seat instead?   Thanks Bill W San Jose  
    • I have a basic 2026 1500 WT  (2.7L/4WD reg cab shorttbed). Comfy, generally happy with electronics/radio - but is there a way I can add switches to steering wheel right-side position (curr. empty) so I can adjust volume, push phone button to voice dial, etc? Bill W San Jose  
    • The curb weight on a 1 ton crew cab long bed is around 7k lbs.  Now, I don't know where you went to school but 9k is not more than 2x 7k lbs. More than 2x 7k lbs would be 14k+.   With that said, obviously yes you're going to feel a 9k lb trailer when slowing down.  I already said, when accelerating.  When changing lanes?  No.  But if you look at the context of what was quoted, the original person said, "after a mile or two..." which means that would be after the accelerating portion and you're driving a generally steady pace.  Please do learn to read and comprehend.
    • So I purchased the Range unit for my 2026 and I am seeing different locations suggested for the ECM . Can anyone confirm wither under hood, left side or right side or behind the wheelwell?
    • Like I've said before. Di and Carbon buildup is not that big of a concern. Engine had minimal buildup, and that engine was obviously not super well maintained. Do regular oil changes, and you're gtg as long as the rest of the truck lasts. Also, the High Pressure FP that people ****** about, but can't tell you why.  Now, I wish they'd trash the variable oil pump. No real world issues with them, but I'll gladly eat whatever miniscule MPG it's saving me in favor of more oil at all RPMs.    Curious to see his assessment of the 7.3 compared to the 6.6. I expect he'll praise the port inj, but from a structural standpoint, the 6.6 is as robust as any engine out there.    Not to take away from the 7.3. I feel it's equally as good as the 6.6.     As to heat on the rear cyls, I'd have to see numerous examples before I'd say it's an issue. Especially not knowing the history of that engine. For all is known, they could have blown a rad hose, and ran it hot, and the 2 rear cyls may be the first to get hot in a low coolant situation, but not be an issue aside from that.
