I've got a 2020 Denali HD with 44k miles on it  and this is the second time now that I have gotten a service def code.  This time they told the the def heater was bad. It's part of the tank and evidently you have to change the whole tank.

There is literally no availability on these ANYWHERE.  I'm being told no dealerships in the country have them. There is a single one at a dealership in Illinois but they won't sell it because it's for one of their customers and they have had at least 95 calls on it trying to buy it.

So basically I have an 80 thousand dollar truck that I can't drive for who knows how long... Could be months.  This is ridiculous.

I still have about 50 miles left before it puts me in reduced power mode and limits me to 65mph.

So part of my post was just to vent and see if anyone else has suggestions for me. And the other part is to ask how this reduced power mode works. I mean I could live with 65mph I guess for a while.  Is it gonna stay there?  Will it get worse and keep throttling me back?  How quick?  I have never had to test the waters on it.

Any advice is appreciated!

I know this isn’t much help but on the Facebook L5P page I have seen multiple people mention this exact problem and back order issues with no dates being given for availability...sorry about that, good luck

I hear ya..mine is in the shop now with no time frame for the part to arrive.  I was told that once it hits the 65 mph threshold, soon thereafter it will reduce to a crawl.  Bottom line is they are not driveable once that tank heater goes.  Extremenly frustrating to say the least.  11,000 on mine

On a side note, I was given a print out of every dealer in the country that shows them in stock...I called every one in hopes I would get lucky.  NOPE, all spoken for.  A couple dealers told me it took 2 weeks and others have said they've been waiting 6 weeks.  Sure wish they offered a 10spd with the 6.6 gas, I might actually give that a chance given this situation.

I wanted the 6.6 gas but ended up getting a Duramax since they don't make Gas in higher trims unless you order and thats as bad as trying to find parts like this. I'm assuming they gave you a loaner, not sure how they make something like this right?

I had a 17' Duramax and had the heater go out once which they fixed and the DPF go into reduced power 3 times which they did nothing for. The DPF would eventually fix itseld but no go with heater. I'm crossing my fingers I don't have these issues with this new 21'

They are building 1000's of new HD's every week.

There is no acceptable excuse for not redirecting def tanks to existing customers.

Just got my truck back last week after being at the dealer for 3 weeks with a bad DEF heater. My truck ended up being the guinea pig for a fix they wanted to try until the part comes in. They spliced two wires together that should not work together but did it anyways against GMs wishes. It has been working flawlessly for the last week and my dealer asks for an update everyday to keep GM engineers in the loop. My truck was the first they had seen with the problem... now some dealers around here have 20+ trucks sitting in their lots with the same issues.

I have a $100k truck and own a business that I use it for everyday to haul. This was a big pi$$ off to me that GM couldn't fix the problem. My part was ordered weeks ago and was canceled by GM because they had so many failures coming in they are going to try and redesign the part before sending them out I am told. Sounds like a recall will be coming. I'm just happy that my dealer chose me to be the guinea pig because my loaner (at first it was a Terrain which I told them didn't work for my job, and they gave me a 1500 a couple days later which helped a bit) wasn't cutting it for what I bought my truck to do.

Also, I drove it in reduced power at 104km/hr (65mph) which was good for about 100 miles or so, and then it alerted me that it would reduce again to 88km/hr (55mph) which is barely the speed limit on the side roads, and less than the speed limit on our highways... if it didn't keep dropping the Max speed, I would have advised you guys to keep it until there was a fix... but it doesn't work that way unfortunately

Can you do a DEF system delete? Are you in a state that requires it?

You can't do a DEF or DPF delete if you don't have the tuner/programmers needed, and the EPA shut down all the known tuners that were providing those.

Basketcase,

I showed this post to my dealership, and they wanted to know if it would be possible to get some more information on this?  Perhaps the name of your dealership so that they can contact them?  Or a picture of the two wires jumped?  Or a description of the process?  We're dying for anything about this possible fix!  You can PM me the info if you want to leave it off the public forum.

Thanks!

does anyone know what the dealership does with the old tank after they replace with a new one

All warranty parts are held on to by the dealer for a certain amount of time.  If GM decides they want the part back for whatever reason, the dealer ships it back to GM.  If GM does not want the part back they are thrown away.

Does anyone know if the tanks on the 2019's are the same part number as the 2020's?

They're different.  19's will not work on 20's.

    • My 2025 Silverado 1500 had to receive a brand-new engine (long block) under warranty last month at only around 16,500 miles. Before the replacement, the truck repeatedly displayed "Engine Oil Level Low" warnings, even though the Oil Life Monitor still showed around 50% remaining after about 6,000 miles since my last oil change. After seeing the warning several times, I checked the dipstick with the engine cold, and the oil level was completely normal. The next day, the message escalated to "Add Engine Oil." At first, I assumed it was just a faulty oil level sensor, so I brought the truck to the dealership. After inspecting the engine, they found internal cylinder wall scoring and ultimately replaced the entire long block under warranty. Before this happened, I was planning to install a 4-inch lift and suspension upgrade on my truck. After needing a new engine at just 16,500 miles, I honestly don't see the point anymore. I also contacted GM to ask whether my vehicle qualified for a buyback, but I was informed that it does not at this time. Anyway, this experience has left me with serious concerns about the long-term reliability of this engine. I sincerely hope NHTSA expands the current investigation or recall to include 2025 model and performs a thorough inspection of affected vehicles. My biggest concern is that these engines may fail shortly after the powertrain warranty expires. If GM truly stands behind this engine, then at the very least, please consider extending the powertrain warranty to 10 years for affected owners. That would go a long way toward restoring customer confidence.
    • Without exception but then I'm the odd duck, right? I know what goes into that test, how it is calculated and thus how to beat it. But EPA values are often not beaten by the general public and the government has in past years adjusted the means and methods to come to those values to more closely approximate "Joe Average".    The only real trick to beating that EPA average is don't drive like "Joe Average".    It's the same method you used to profit from "Economic Migration" and in doing so beat the 'stats'. But you, like me, are not "Joe Average".     The thing you don't seem to grasp is this "Purchasing Power Index" isn't forward looking. It doesn't predict what it going to be but looks backward and states what it was. They are not telling us what the THINK, they are telling us what they MEASURED. Example:    Wife says "I'm going to lose 40 pounds by Christmas". May she does, maybe she doesn't but the doctors office who weighed her when she made that statement and again at Christmas only REPORTS what the RESULT was. You and I can banter about what was possible and what aunt Tilly did till the cows come home but the result is the result. Arguing otherwise is.....irrational. That's all I'm saying. This isn't about:      What you are calling a 'Statistic' is a RESULT not a CALCUATION and as a result the RULE. Like gravity as a rule, it can not be broken.
    • Just wanted to say thank you for posting this. Years later, your thread is still helping Silverado owners.   I bought my 2025 Silverado 1500 in January 2025, and I've had what feels like the exact same rattle since day one. After reading your findings, I believe my truck has the same issue with the cable carrier contacting the rear sliding window. To be honest, I had pretty much given up on pursuing the issue. It wasn't until I recently drove another brand's pickup that I realized just how quiet their cabin was—and how noisy mine has been all along. On my truck, the rattle happens on almost any paved road, gets even worse on rougher pavement, and I can even hear it during braking and acceleration.   I actually referenced your thread when submitting my case to GM, hoping they'll recognize this as a recurring issue instead of treating it as an isolated incident. The reason I reached out to GM first is because my dealership told me they would need to keep the truck for at least two days just to diagnose the problem. I was concerned that even after two days, they still might not be able to identify the source of the rattle before giving the truck back to me. I had also asked a few dealerships about this issue during previous service visits, but none of them seemed to know what was causing it or had a solution. That's why I decided to contact GM directly first, hoping they might already have an official repair procedure or guidance for this issue.   I also hope GM eventually comes up with an official fix for this problem. I have a feeling there are many Silverado owners experiencing the same rattle, but most either choose to live with it or simply don't know what the cause is.   Really appreciate you taking the time to document your diagnosis. Your post is still making a difference years later.
    • I have 2 choices.
    • Do you have access to BP fuels? Some stations have Silver 91 E-0 priced the same as their 93 E-10.  There is a local Marathon with 90 alky free for $6 a gallon but I go down the road to BP for $5-ish. They also have a 100 E-0 but that stuff is $10 a pop.
