Tailgate spontaneously opening

Did anyone ever have a problem with a good old fashioned manual pull tailgate? Yeah me either. Sometimes reinventing the wheel is unnecessary. I wish my truck had a manual old handle.

I have had my cover off and can confirm the switch is underneath the holes, another reason to plug the holes is the switch and linkage will freeze in the winter after getting soaked.

Did anyone ever have a problem with a good old fashioned manual pull tailgate? Yeah me either. Sometimes reinventing the wheel is unnecessary. I wish my truck had a manual old handle.

I disagree, I love the tailgate. I've always driven a Ford F150 and decided to try an AT4. One of the things I like the best is the tailgate. If I'm hauling dogfood or anything in the bed it makes it

This is the first time I've purchased the extended warranty on my vehicles, solely because of all the computers and electronics that I fear will fail way before the power train will. I've actually talked to the GM tech at dealership and surprisingly, he said they haven't had many tailgate switch failures. I'm hoping mine continues to work properly.

Well, if that happens, just find a switch online like Ebay. I'm sure they'll be the same and far cheaper than at the dealership. I replaced a few cameras that the dealership wanted anywhere from $280-$500 to replace them, cost me under $50 for the camera & about 10 minutes to replace, worked as good as new.

 Dad's 56' Ford and a couple of my Granddad's trucks of my first memories had the best ever. Couldn't go wrong with hook and chain. I've had a Ford and a Chevy both take a crap but, they were both 100K plus trucks, stuff is going to happen. Mostly it was dry rotted, brittle plastic parts like those rod retainers. 

 

 I don't see these fancy electric tailgates being anything but a pain in the ass with some age and use on them. But in defense overall, I've had vehicles hold up, last, and be pretty trouble free like nothing in the past. They build pretty good stuff these days when they get it right. Which they then decide it's smart to change what works LOL! I have absolute faith I can get the miles out of my Chevy's like people only expected from a Honda Accord. But that doesn't mean you don't have to feed them. Had to puts a trans in my 16' Impala last year at 115K miles but I didn't wait till I was sitting on side of the road. So, 5 grand in 7 years besides tires and brakes? Not bad - Oh, and the electric trunk release assm 2 months ago LOL!  

 

 But you'd think, they could get a freaking tailgate latch nailed and bulletproof. I haven't plugged my holes yet but I will.

GM has just released a bulletin about the random tailgate dropping in GMC Sierras and Chevy Silverados. I too have had issues with my 23 Silverado. The tailgate has dropped 3 times now while driving. Once when I was towing a trailer and it caused damage. My claim with GM corporate was denied in May, because my dealership couldn’t replicate it. The bulletin states water leaks into the switch, causing the wiring to fault. I go through the car wash a few times a week. Interesting.....replacing switches appears to be a band-aid fix.  There is no mention of how to prevent water intrusion and preventing repeat damage to switches.  Ex. change plastic handle to one without holes.  Perhaps the new parts are waterproof marine type plugs/switches?

I find it odd that some members have siliconed the holes and are still having switch failure. Mine have been getting wet for over 14 months now without a problem. Common sense would suggest it's not a water problem...

I agree, I'm in the same boat as you.  My 22 has never had a problem.  I still think I will throw some silicone on those openings but I've never had a problem at all.  Perhaps I've just been lucky.

So this happened on our '24 last weekend. Had no idea it was down until we hopped out to look at some trailers at the local RV dealer. Not sure at what point it came down but it was up when we left the house. Thankfully it hasn't happened while towing our 5th wheel.

I haven’t had it happen. I also have a keyed truck. I wonder if a lot of them coming down are push button start which means the fob is in the pocket getting pressed? Just trying to figure it out.

Along with the button being above the center console that is easy to accidentally push when moving/charging a phone or other items that one might store there. I have done that myself. I do believe that the gate will not open when the vehicle is out of park though, at least it's not supposed to. The locking mechanism seems to work great also if people just take the time to lock it. I can't say if this would prevent the gate from opening on it's own though??

It does state it "may" be the reason, but that doesn't sound like a very confident reason in my book. That's like saying "It MAY rain today, but it MAY be sunny"

The gate wont go down using the FOB or interior switch unless it's in Park.

      Can ask that about a lot of places.   Holiday sells 91 for $1 over 87 octane. BP 93 is 80 cents. Amoco 93 is 80 cents Kwik Trips is $1.20 for 92 or whatever they have and $1 for the 91.   I know that this is not exactly same as what you are saying with the premium to premium debate of those two stations but why is there such a difference. Top Tier this and that, it's all BS. All the fuel comes from the same damn refinery, so give me a break.

      Why does Mobil Premium cost 90 cents a gallon more than Shell Premium when their regular offerings are but pennies apart?

      Was all the way down to $3.69 a gallon but then jumped back to $3.99 just because for some reason.   Diesel floats between $4.80's to $5.10ish a gallon. I even saw Diesel #1 for $6.09 today but nobody in there right mind even buys that in the summer.

      Mine just keeps lagging or getting stuck on the reverse camera. When I turn off the truck, get out, and close the door it will still stay on. It’s very intermittent and I would not be able to duplicate the issue.

      I was checking out fuel prices at my farm fuel retailer at their pumps and yes the farm price is a bit lower than the non dyed fuel and was glad to see that the regular farm gas price has dropped a lot from what it had been but what blew me away was the price of diesel as the spread now compared to before the prices went up earlier in the year, diesel was actually slightly lower than gas which was a switch from the theme the last number of years. However that sure isn't the theme lately and definitely not right now. The prices I will post are not from that retailer but just looking at gasbuddy for the main city in this area and instead of posting the lowest price someone found I will list the higher price ( and that may not be the highest price, just whatever someone posted on gasbuddy ).   So regular gas and there are a lot of stations listing the same price for regular is 1.68 a liter, premium 2.00 a liter. Diesel 2.03 a liter for a top price I saw on diesel.   Figures out to 6.36 a us gallon Canadian funds for regular and 7.68 for diesel. With the US exchange rate it would be 4.58 us for regular and 5.53 for diesel.    Thought I would figure that out to get a picture of what it settles out like compared to various US prices and its about the same as the current price in Fairbanks AK as Anchorage tends to be lower. So yes, these would be the prices and higher along the way on the Alaska highway where they know they have a captured market !, for fuel prices for those beginning the long drive back to the lower 48   The problem is our Canadian dollar and going to the states that have the high prices, boy do we pay then !
