James Beyer Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 Hey all, thinking about moving on up to 2500hd, needed for towing our travel trailer gvwr #8850. Curious as what you are getting for mpg on 2500 6.0L engines. City & highway, with and without trailer. Currently have a 14 gmc 1500, getting 16+ city, 21+ highway, backroads at 57 mpr 24+, towing trailer 6-10 mpg. Thank You, James
shakenfake Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 What 2500HDs still have a 6.0? I thought the last time that was a thing was 2013. Time for a diesel
James Beyer Posted October 15, 2021 Author Posted October 15, 2021 (edited) Thanks shakenfake, must be 6.6L instead of 6.0L Buying used, love to have 6.6L Diesel, just waaay beyond what I can afford. Funny Tim, but true. Like riding my Harley for mpg. Just courious what people are getting for mpg in a 2500hd. Edited October 15, 2021 by James Beyer Left out
shakenfake Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 That's fair, I personally don't know of anyone with a 6.6L so I couldn't tell you what they are like.

Well, you are in the 2015-2019 HD section so yes, the 6.0 would be the gas option those years. 2020+up new body HD have the 6.6 gas. 2015-2019 6.0 gas figure average per tank empty driving around 13-15mpg. Towing 7-9mpg. 2020+up 6.6 gas figure 14-16mpg empty, 7-10mpg towing. Edited October 15, 2021 by newdude
Mike Barber Posted October 15, 2021 Posted October 15, 2021 The trip odometer that I have never reset in my 2016 2500HD 6.0 says 11.3 lifetime mpg for about 26,000 miles. Some towing, lots of short trips.
James Beyer Posted October 15, 2021 Author Posted October 15, 2021 Thank You newdude & Mike Barber. 11-15 mpg, much appreciated.

Damn I don't think I have ever seen a 15-19 gas 6.0 haha I thought that the 6.6 started in K2XX or did they just get rid of the 6.0 for the T1XX?

The 6.0 from 15-19 (technically 2010-2019) was the last new variant of the 6.0, the L96. L96 is basically the same as the LY6 before it (07-09) just with the addition of Flex Fuel capability. 6.0 was Gen 4 small block, LS family. The new 6.6 is Gen V small block, LT family. 6.0 was 360hp @5400rpm, 380tq @4200rpm. 6.6 gas is 401hp @5200rpm, 464tq @4000rpm. As far as differences aside from the fact they are both different engine families, the 6.6 gas is direct injected, 6.0 was multiport indirect. As far as similarities, both were engineered and tested for truck use, both have VVT, and both don't use AFM. Edited October 15, 2021 by newdude
gearheadesw Posted October 17, 2021 Posted October 17, 2021 12 mpg average, gets down to 8 mpg towing, but it's an 8,000 pound truck, meant to do work, not be economical or pretty.
James Beyer Posted October 19, 2021 Author Posted October 19, 2021 Thank you gearheadesw, everyone. the 2500 is diffently a work truck, lots of power, but not good mpg. The same mpg back in 2000. Figured by now 2021, the big three would have figured out how to get 30+ mpg with these trucks, oh well. I just pull the camper around 10+ times per year, and not to far so...
rosidian Posted October 19, 2021 Posted October 19, 2021 Good luck, James. Hope you find a good deal. 1
Big Whiskey Posted October 23, 2021 Posted October 23, 2021 Empty, I'm getting 12-13 mpg in mixed driving. Towing, it drops to 9-10 mpg. The 2500HD gassers are much better at doing "truck stuff" than the 1500's, but you pay for it at the pump. Great trucks aside from the gas mileage.
