Hey All

newbie, Sierra elevation 5.3/8 8 speed. just bought and in construction using truck alot and notice major gas burn in idle. compared to old Ford F 150 or Ram it seems there is not a restrictor. like the hwy mpg/ but city really sucks.

Any thoughts or chips to use to save gas burn at idle ?

Nope, nothing will fix that. They already idle at 500-550rpm when hot and if you use the AC it will burn more fuel.

I get 9-12mpg in the city up here in Minnesota in the winter because I use my remote start alot and drive only city with speed limits under 50mph for my commute to work. Summer ain't much better, only get 14ish city.

Yea, stop idling.  No "chips" that will save you fuel idling either.

Steve...Once upon a time a long time ago in a land far far way was a motor with a carburetor and Kettering ignition and in those days the tune from the factory was plain awful. Almost anyone could improve combustion, economy and power with a screwdriver and a matchbook cover.

Those days are past. Todays tune are much leaner and cleaner and while a few real sharp guys with some expensive equipment can get a few more horsepower from a stock motor even they can not do so as cheaply as we once could.

If you want to make a real difference in your mileage buy yourself some 'feed back' like a Linear Logic Scan Gauge II plug in and teach yourself to drive frugally. Let it instruct you on your habits in real time. There is some to found as well in proper maintenance and good lubrication choices but there are no longer major slices of pie to be taken from the tin no matter what the marketing types are saying.

Everyone has given solid consult and good advice.

I will add that brand new vehicles of many makes including GM will have defective coil/s.  They can partially fail or have corrosion on contacts etc that will affect the proper fire to the plug. I will ruin your MPG needlessly and the engines will not feel like they are missing.  MIL/CEL codes will NOT set unless it totally fails.

Check the contacts and connections for corrosion and good contact.

Dealers really have no real effective way to detect a partially failing coil or coils but that can really affect a brand new unit.

When I saw  high fuels dilution and elevated nitration in tests run both on chemical testing of engine oil and engine test cell data many times we saw coil partial failure as the cause.  The exhaust bag chemical and gas testing may or may not show this depending on effective after-treatment. No after-treatment we could see the poorly combusted fuel.

An idling engine burns fuel at a set rate. You can't lower that rate.  If you did then it wouldn't run, hence idle.  The only way to save fuel is to drive only when you have to.

I'm a retired construction worker. Your truck is the most expensive tool you own. Take care of it and drive it for years.  Fuel cost is directly related to the price of gas. Idle time, foot control are your best deterrent.

There is no magic chip.

thanks for all posts. great points and input. next vehicle will be a smaller exo diesel or 4. maybe even electric but that EV seems far away to make it affordable for most buyers. I am excited to see Ford F series lighting!!

I hear you.  I regret getting the 6.2 because of the cost of fuel.  It's now over $5/gal in San Diego.  However, I would've hated getting the 3.0 Duramax because it wasn't the 6.2.  I wish I could afford 2 trucks.

I agree, the track to Ev needs time and hybrid vehicles may be the thing to transition correctly over 10 to 20 years. you see how fu...ked it gets when you rush to leave a foreign country that we been fighting in for 20 years. our government doesn't do much right anymore and bows to whatever is popular foe votes
