I have a better story from my youth. I had a 1970 F250 2wd with a 460 C6 combo with a violent shift kit and the engine was bored 10 over. What an animal. This was in 1997. So it was old even then but the engine was fresh. Anyway I didn’t have a grasp on gearing or rev limits etc and was racing my friends Camaro. A 94 catfish and my old horizontal speedometer was pegged past 100 and I never let off and I heard something and when I exited off the freeway it wanted to die I kept having to give it revs to keep it running and I pulled it into the shop I worked at and the mechanics took the valve covers off and low and behold I floated a pushrod right out it was laying on the block. The most amazing thing? It wasn’t bent it didn’t look bent at all it was unreal and we put it back together and it ran fine holy heck.

I bought a cheap little tach after that.

I loved that truck. Key was on the left. Crazy torque

I love it!!  The things we did back in the day!!  My dad was State Patrol, so it was hard to get away with anything in our little small town.  There was only one golden rule he had....he said, everyone speeds, I don't care about that.  But if you ever drink and drive and I find out, I will arrest you, take you to jail and have them throw away the key....he said boy, they will have to pump sunlight into to your cell...... so....you know what I didn't do.....yup, no drinking and driving.... 😀  He was a very fair man and great dad, no reason to break that golden rule of his.  I still don't to this day!

But here's where he used to just shake his head at me.  Have any of you seen the movie Eat my dust with Ron Howard?  It was quite similar to my life growing up.  It was considered a professional courtesy to not give another cops family a ticket for most anything back in the day.  And I wore that professional courtesy out....lol... I used to keep a paper on my sun visor to mark how many times I had been stopped.  No joke... I finally got an actual ticket on my 18th birthday of which marked the 18th time I had been pulled over.  My mother went ballistic on me.  Dear old dad didn't say much.  Just shook his head and didn't say much.  Funny thing is the trooper that gave me ticket, that I did deserve asked me if I wanted to go riding with him that Friday night....lol....it cost me 25 bucks and an ass chewing from the judge but we all stayed friends.  True story....being the son of a state cop sucked growing up, being beaten up by those bigger guys that were like, your dad stopped my dad, pow....right in the kisser....yeah I had to learn to be a scrapper early on.  But it was fun as hell aside from that.  They all wanted me to become a trooper too.  I knew I didn't have that tolerance for BS they have to put up with, but it was fun as hell riding with them all on the weekends.  The stories I have are amazing!

I've read through a lot of this long thread and am feel a lot of dread.  I have a 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 Denali.  The dealer put 6 quarts in the engine at 19,000 and I have since started burning oil.  First time I took it in they checked for leaks (found none) and gave it back saying come back in 1,000 miles.  Of course, once GM got involved, the dealer realized they did not conduct a proper oil consumption test.  I am in the middle of one now and can see a huge shift in 'cover you ***' type of documentation.  Likely because GM has contacted them about it.

Read the last order and you can smell the BS.

  • First return to dealer it was barely on the dipstick.  Added 1.5 quarts (so they claim)
  • Second return is was not on the dipstick.  Added 1 quart.
  • Noted evidence of towing.  **NO STUFF!!  Who drives a 2500 for pleasure?  But I have not towed since early Fall, 1,000's of miles before the last oil change and consumption test.
  • They state on the order that 1 quart per 1,000 miles is acceptable.  Assuming an oil change at 5,000 miles, and I lose 62.5% of my oil??  From driving 60% highway / 40% city?

Note the order has a quantity of 2 for quarts of oil.  Why 2 if they only used 1?

I have had 4 Chevy and GMC pickups plus 7 other GM vehicles.  If nothing further is done, I likely need to sell this very expensive truck.  If I do, it will be my very last GM product ever.

This is sad to see. I hope this helps you. I talked to a high performance auto tech and it changed the way I look at oil on the market nowadays. Look at this post I made.

UPDATE: Truck currently at 57,951. No change really, same issue but I firmly believe taking to dealer would have been a total waste of time, even to have it documented since it technically is "within spec". Oil life indicator is currently at 23% and just received an "add engine oil" message. Sure enough dipstick read low and added almost 2 quarts for it to register again. Did some towing the past couple of months and that seems to be the "reason". Crappy MPG's and oil consumption maintaining highway speeds while towing a 7500 lb camper but she still makes it to the destination so can I really complain?

Im sure you have, but have you tried a different type of oil, brand? I really dont keep track, but i think im using Quaker state.

My 2024 6.6 gasser 3500. About 24,000 miles on mine now. It uses no noticeable oil usage per oil changes.

Currently on this oil, since mid October, i drove around upper MN, towed to Rockport TX about 1,600 miles then 650 to New Mexico then just got back to Rockport 650 hear and no noticeable oil usage. Im towing a 10,000lbs tall 5ver. I think its at 30% left oil life.

Just got a "add engine oil" DIC message. 2700 miles since last change, I'm just over 2 full quarts low. Dipstick was dry.

At what truck mileage?

Forgot how to check oil?

obviously you should not need to unless you saw a leak on a newer vehicle like this.

I expect some smart comment but this is not 1978 and this truck should not be using this much oil, THAT is why NHTSB is investigating GM.

HOWEVER I will say that once you realize GM makes crappy A**ed engines that use oil like a 1947 Packard then you should start checking it..lol

Mine WAS drinking oil like crazy until I did a flush and switched my grade to 10-30 as opposed to 0-20w and use only HIGHER quality oil than the idiots at the dealer put in.

Buying another brand next time unless we get the Escalade V with the handbuilt ZR-1 engine.

Cheers

Ok fellas, I've got a 2021 Gasser, just took in for an oil change (every 5k) and, they told me she wasn't even low. And, we've been on 5 camping trips during this 5,000 mile stretch. We haul an 11,000 pound 5th wheel.  I use Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 & a Napa Gold Filter

Anything above 0-20w likely is the helper in this case, still lucky you I would say

Obviously you should check your oil but you're smarter than me.

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.

    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
