Some covers just don’t work well with the tailgate. Some do. My understanding is that the MX4 is an example of one that works well with the tailgate. Then there is the install. The cover can be installed improperly and need a bit of adjustment to correct that. Mine had to be moved forward a bit after the original install for the automatic tailgate to work. Mine still sticks a bit, but I didn’t buy a high end cover and I was not aware of this issue until it happened to me. My next cover will be guaranteed to work with my tailgate as part of the sales contract.
matienzone Posted January 26, 2022 Posted January 26, 2022 I've had the soft roll-up cover from GM, but that was put on by mistake by the dealer. Seemed like it was pretty darn good with keeping water out. Really easy to remove and definitely gives you almost the entire bed back when rolled up. latch system was pretty solid as well. My biggest reasons I didnt want it was because that wasn't part of the deal I worked out when I purchased the truck and I wanted added security of a hard tri-fold. When I went back to the dealer to have them replace it with the tri-fold cover that was part of the deal I agreed, but I forgot to specify the hard version, so they went ahead and placed a soft tri-fold on just to hold up their side of the deal. I'm planning on selling this soft tri fold so I can get the hard tri-fold for the added security and I'd love to have the option to pull the latch open on either side and not have to go to both sides just to undo the rear most third of the tri-fold. I test drove trailboss that had the hard tri-fold with the pull string latch that unlatched both sides and 2 kick stands for the forward most third of the cover. Still trying to find out which one it was. It was probably the most convenient hard tri-fold.
matienzone Posted January 26, 2022 Posted January 26, 2022 Found the hard tri-fold I've been looking for: https://realtruck.com/p/gator-fx-tonneau-cover/v/chevy/silverado-1500/2021/ Note that it has the pull cable for both sides and the kick stands I was referring to. Another positive point to getting this one, it lays flush, almost like this is what all of our truck should've came with from factory...the GM accessory ones all add 1.5-2in to bed height.
Dirk13 Posted January 27, 2022 Posted January 27, 2022 @matienzone security is not that great on the hard ones either. They are extremely easy to get into with just a pry bar, the latches are not strong. Or fish a coat hanger in there between the tailgate and cover and grab the pull cord. If you want security you need something like an all metal cover. If it’s security you want, a hard tri fold is not the cover. Also, they are not quite flush. They stick up about a half inch. Much lower profile and better looking than the soft tri folds but still not flush 1
Desrunner Posted January 27, 2022 Posted January 27, 2022 @skully85 When looking at trifold, keep in mind how the last section, which is closest to the cab, is propped up. Bakflip has it rest on the rear of the cab with the prop rod pushing it against the cab. Other manufacturers have the prop rod fix it vertically and not leaning against the cab. Just something to consider it you envision using it in that position. The nice thing about having the trifolds and having that last panel come up is that it protects the back window when loading longer items. But you lose rear view visibility. So, I had a G2 Bakflip and liked it. I did go with the Revolver so that I have some rear visibility but it doesn’t feel as sturdy as a good trifold.
matienzone Posted January 29, 2022 Posted January 29, 2022 @Dirk13 I agree, it can definitely be opened with a pry bar, but it's definitely a little more piece of mind than the soft roll up or the soft tri fold. Any of the soft covers probably can be torn with a sharp object. I figured the hard tri fold would be the nice balance between heightened security and hefty prices. I sure would love for one of those Diamondback covers for like $1800.

Out of all the ones mentioned here, I havent seen many say if it interferes with the auto down of the tailgate. Can anyone speak to this for the models you have on your trucks? I just purchased a 2022 Denali limited shortbed with the tri fold soft cover. It prevents the tailgate from dropping with the button release. Will try to put a spacer on the rear corners to elevate it off the tailgate or trim the weatherstripping a little. Frustrating Edited January 29, 2022 by Mad Max My spelling sucks 1

GN2018 Posted January 30, 2022 Posted January 30, 2022 3 hours ago, Mad Max said: What did you do? For now, I’m just living with it. It’s a less expensive soft roll up cover so I’ll replace it at some point with one that actually works. When I first got it, the tailgate hardly worked at all, let alone automatically. I took it back and they adjusted it forward a bit and it worked better, but still doesn’t drop down automatically. I’m thinking about having them cut the weather strip and see if that will work, but then I’m almost guaranteed to have water infiltration (not really a big deal) and no guarantee that it will work. I really detest when things don’t work right and/or have to be rigged to work so I’m kinda just doing a slow burn right now waiting until a can justify getting a new cover. Should have just bought a good one in the beginning. But, I guess I could still have had this issue since I wasn’t aware that it was an issue when I was shopping.

Hopefully a couple corner shims and or trimming the weatherstripping will fix the problem. Otherwise I guess it’s the Bak Flip mx something or other. They seem to work better but leak a little. my ‘53 Chevy 5 window had just two hinges and two chains. It worked every time. 1
Raphaël Macron Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 I bought a tri-fold hard cover that cost half the price of the realtruck. Although it is not functional enough, it meets my needs. https://mostplusauto.com/collections/hard-tonneau-cover
