It definitely is true that they do not make a ton of money per gallon on the fuel sales, I will not argue with that. It's just as we have been saying, why are the prices so different per station within a small radius so different when it's the same company. For sure the nicer neighborhoods around me where all the millionaires live will have higher prices but not by much. Also these stations make a killing when "all of a sudden" the fuel prices spike 30+ cents overnight even though the fuel in the ground tanks was bought weeks ago and the next 2-3 loads of pre-bought fuel has already been paid for at a cheaper price.

They just learned how the play the system more and chalk it up to "well the market changed and we need to follow it".

At least in the USA, there’s some competition between neighborhoods, even between street corners. Back home in Quebec, it’s basically the same price across the same areas, and when consumer protection steps in, they always claim there’s no collusion. All stations within miles seem to adjust their prices around the same time, whether they’re national brands or independents. Occasionally, you’ll find one that tries to raise or lower prices faster, but that’s rare. Most of the time, Costco is the cheaper option.

In high school I worked in a gas station pumping gas, the owner had quite a few gas stations. I would go to a different station location when needed. His prices were always higher in nicer areas'.

I used to play poker with a guy that owned a local gas station. One day at the table he was complaining that selling gas was not worth it. He made more money on in store purchases. If I remember correctly I think he said he made 12 cents a gallon.

My first job after I got my license was pumping gas. It was a garage. He was a tad cheaper to build repeat business to get repairs and oil changes. After moving to Texas I often fantasized having a full service gas station because everything is self service here. Along with minor repair work and oil changes. Instead of a convenience store like they morphed into.

Fuel retailers are going to need to up their card payment pre-auth limits again and put a sign on the pump: Insert card, mortgage application, or kidney.

Years ago (when gas was 99 cents or so) we had a busy intersection with stations on 3 of the 4 corners and fierce competition. A bit of a war broke out between them and before long they were all selling below cost. State put an end to it, violation of the minimum markup law. 🙄

Ah, the good old days.

Atleast we don't live in Australia or New Zealand and a few other places. They have regular unleaded fuel prices topping $8-9 a gallon in US dollars and Diesel prices into the $11-13 a gallon range.

I wonder is electric vehicles are more popular over there due to those prices.

Gas prices have hit a national average of $4.02...

Diesel is over $7 some places around here in the Northwest, $6.39 at the discount stations around here, lowest I can find.

Some stations at $3.39 and other up to $3.69 now.

Diesel still around $5.00.

Paid $6.399 for diesel yesterday after $0.20/gallon discount using my Safeway club card. The truck dipped below quarter tank, so it was time.

18.089 gallons

$115.75

Safeway has upped their auth to $200 per transaction.
