be careful with the software update tonight

Recommended Posts

my 2023 silverado RST just installed a software update from the radio and it killed the transfer case computer and ABS module. I did not write down the update code that was prompted to install and left the truck in park for 2 hours to update. Tried to remove the battery after 4 hours and it isn't saying the update finished successfully. Now it's being towed to the dealer for service.

The symptoms are service 4wd, the parking brake keeps engaging when in park and I can only get it out of park when I put it in neutral or drive and press the parking brake button, the front collision avoidance light is lit yellow on the dash.

Here are the errors that onstar found:

Module Diagnostic Code Diagnostic Information Recommended Action
ECM - Engine System U0102 IGNORE UNKNOWN DTC No action needed
ECM - Engine System U220E Vehicle network communication code. The network provides a communications link between systems inside the vehicle and when the network is disrupted a code can be set. If vehicle functionality is impacted please seek service soon. No action needed

Is this a brand new just released update?

My 2023 says it's up to date.....last update about 2-weeks ago.

It seems to be. I just updated it when I bought it on Monday and now it has the update showing tonight when I went to shut the truck down.

The last update that I installed is version GM N23-241156. That was done on Monday and installed in 12 minutes and actually said it installed successfully. This one seems to have been a broken update (maybe they are as great as Microsoft with updates) and killed the data bus on the truck even after sitting over 2 hours for the update it claimed would take 15 minutes.

edit: when I check for updates on the radio or through the onstar app it claims it is up to date.

Updates are pushed to the vehicle before they ask to be installed.

They are not pushed to all vin's at the same time.

@BigMick2023 yours might already have N23-241156

Mine asked for (and was given) approval to install GM N23-241156 on the 21Aug2023.

It was the first of 4 that were installed  in the last 10 days of August.

List of recent update numbers, and brief descriptions for each, can be found in the install history on the phone app.

(I think this just for the Global B vehicles)

Note for GM N23-241156 says - 'Updates made to the overall vehicle software update process'

Didn't create any issues with mine.

I've (so far) had no updates during September

Mine just did the update. Noticed a few small changes but nothing detrimental yet

How did you initiate the update? I went like the one I ran manually when I looked for updates on Monday when I brought the truck home from the dealer and placed the truck in park, was paired to my WiFi at home and had the parking brake engaged.

The monday update went through in like 12 minutes time but the one tonight didn't seem to do anything after 2 hours when I came back to it.

I got the reminder on the screen when I shut the truck off. Let it install complete over the air and came back out like 30 min later after I read your post.

I'm guessing your install file got corrupted some how during the process

I hope the dealer can fix it. probably need to reflash all the wonderful systems they pack in the vehicles now. Total BS though that it died from a software update but being I work in IT i'm not surprised. updates never work worth crap on anything.

I was going to call dealer tomorrow as it felt like the trans was shuddering when going into torque converter lock to the point truck was bucking (new 2023 lzo - 800 miles). Also felt like it was down on power vs my previous lm2. I had update come up and accepted it. When I turned truck back on, said update failed, service 4wd and emergency braking disabled. However, the truck now shifts perfectly and power feels great.
im hoping the service 4wd goes off by morning. The update did mention improvements to adaptive cruise control. my truck does not have adaptive cruise.

my previous Lm2 I had until 102k miles. Never had a major issue. Most check engine lights would clear themselves after 50 miles or a battery disconnect. Had it happen maybe 10 times while owning it since new. Ran perfect and got 32mpg going 80 on the way to dealer to trade it in. As much as it sucks, I’d just ignore it and wait for it to clear up on its own.
one thing I did notice however, is that the ac drains literally right onto the trans and transfer case on the new trucks. On my 2020, I had nowhere near as much condensation and it came out onto DPF instead of onto the trans.

Mine shows it got N23-241156 on Sept 3rd.   Then on Sept 9th, I got N23-240984.  If KA only got 0984 yesterday, that seems like a fairly long delay - Unless of course he was putting it off.  Sorry to hear there was a hiccup.  I'm really not liking the degree of the electronic complexity these vehicles have now.  Especially, with the often questionable repair costs.

My GF's daughter is at college and called that her 2018 Honda Civic was showing a CEL and was running a little rough. I told her to go to a AutoZone and get it scanned. Turned out to be a P0340, which is for the camshaft sensor. It's either the sensor or the wiring, both cheap and a dead simple job, but to replace I saw it might require programming so I have her bring it to the Honda. The Honda dealer confirmed the connector wire had rodent damage and quoted $500.  Even sent a pic - Wire broke 1" from connector.

Well, the replacement connector and pigtail is $20. And, it takes all of 10 minutes to complete.  Then they quoted $2,100 for a brake job - New pads and relining the rotors which are fine.  The problem is, this getting to be the new normal.  The automakers are locking down things so tight purposely to make it harder for DYI, and in turn is enabling these dealers and this type of crap.  Sorry for going OT, but I'm kind of fuming right now.

Just bought a 2023 Duramax Sierra on Wednesday. Hour and 1/2 drive home from the dealer. Parked in the carport and update showed up. Shut truck off. Next morning update showed complete. No other issues noted.

By the way, I traded my 2019 Sierra SLT. I could no longer put up with the transmission crap, the rubbing noise from the rear and a few other issues. Got the standard answers from service whenever I took it in. I've been told the 10 speed is better.

Performed the update last night. Started the truck this am. Update failed notification on the infotainment screen. Parking brake applied, Service 4x4 system, forward crash avoidance and 4x4 icon light on. Could only get the brake to release by placing trans. in drive, apply brake pedal and press e-brake button. Dealer can’t look at it until Thursday, 10/5.

sorry buddy but you have the exact experience as me. The dealer looked at it for over 4 hours today and found a wire in the dash that connects the HMI to the radio and it was not sending the full voltage they were testing it with. They are patching the wire and hope to reflash the update tomorrow and hope I can get it back. I can't believe you need to wait that long just to get in the dealer, that's insane!

Right! The truck still drives so I’ll keep using it until dropping at the dealer. Not happy with how it’s been handled thus far. Funny thing is it was just there for an oil change the day before. Not surprised by this software issue. New vehicles are computers on wheels nowadays. Truck has been perfect until now. Glad you are getting your issue resolved.
