davidm767 Posted September 18 Posted September 18 Yesterday I felt sick to my stomach after backing into a pole with my multi-flex tailgate down (at my in-laws place 1000mi away from my home) … does anyone know if they sell the tailgate as a whole unit? I called a dealer and they have the metal shells, but all the innerds, hinges, solenoids, wiring, plastic and paint is not included. Thankfully my truck frame was not damaged and the main gate is still ~mostly~ functional (inner gate only closes on one side). I’ll likely just take her home and deal with it there, but if I can just buy the whole unit I’d save myself a few days/week in the body shop. If not I’ll look online at salvage yards. Thanks! Quote
SoCal Angler Posted September 21 Posted September 21 (edited) Sorry to hear about your mishap. I forgot I left a hand truck behind my truck and my MP gate was down. I backed right into it, although I was traveling very slow. Luckily, the tailgate just moved the dolly back a few feet after I realized it. It didn't even knock the dolly down! However, it could have been worse. I share this as we all make mistakes. It's a material object and it can be fixed/replaced to look just like new! Important thing is...no one was injured. Perhaps an insurance claim may be the best route, as I'm sure the MP gates are expensive. Also, good body shops will know what is possible, as they have been repairing/replacing these gates since they were introduced a few years back. Let us know how it turns out. Best of luck! davidm767 Posted October 21 Author Posted October 21 (edited) So my collision shop is finally fitting a new tailgate to my truck. Hopefully by close of business tomorrow I'll be headed home from the shop with my new gate. Thankfully I was able to use my truck during that time (I had an end of season camper trip my with fam). Grand total? A little over $3k for the new gate (I only pick up the deductible), the adjuster was actually surprised that it didn't cost more as he was assuming it would be closer to $6-8k before he sat down and worked the quote. Bottom line I learned two things...1) The '24 is a fair bit harder to back up than previous trucks I've owned by using only the mirrors and looking out the back window (I have a stacking bed cover which doesnt help) 2) I'm going to be very paranoid about my blind spots from here on out when I have the gate down. Pryme Posted October 21 Posted October 21 Yikes thats a spendy tailgate. I once was backing an old truck slowly out of a carport with my driver door open because I was just going back about 5-6 feet and didn’t notice the pole and yeah my open door rammed right into the carport pole. It was pretty mangled up on the bottom back edge. Total bone head move. Quote

When I was talking to my salesman while he was searching, I told him that I had no interest in the tailgate. 'It's an option on the Chev's so it's not as common as you might think.' My brother's 2024 LTZ has just a standard tailgate. Quote

They might be OK for a 'mall rated' pick up, but what about all the debris that a truck that is actually used sees? I haul firewood in the fall & the box is a mess for a couple weeks. EDIT: It was difficult in the 2017 to remove what falls between the box floor & tailgate. It seems even worse now. Close the tailgate & you can't get your fingers between the bumper & bottom of the tailgate (and no I'm not fat fingered). Do the people that design the trucks anymore actually own or use 1? davidm767 Posted October 22 Author Posted October 22 (edited) FWIW, I see your point if you haul loose loads and debris. For commercial work yes its probably more hassle than not, but for recreational 5th wheel towing its nice to have. It makes it much much easier to load and unload the hitch assembly. The gate folds down allowing me to get closer to pull the release cable saving some time and hassle. Yes the gate is expensive, but since I really only "use" my truck to haul my 16,000lb 5th wheel and for home improvement projects the gate is a nice option to have. I didn't order my truck with the gate as the truck was already on a lot, but I got a hell of a deal on the truck last year. I don't regret having the Flexgate at all, but I'm not using it for work. ManyCamaroz Posted October 26 Posted October 26 I don't have one but would find it beneficial as I get older. Quote
