The viscosity of an engine oil in any of these engines being 9.3 cSt or higher @100 C is not going to stop failures. 

 

Fuel and post EGR fuel deposits and constituents are third party abrasives at times.

I see your point. And FWIW, remember that for this 6.2 recall alone, 28,000+ engines had problems before GM did anything about it, and those were only the ones the NHTSA knows about that were reported, so that's not only a small few!

Just read this in an article pertaining to yet another class action suit:

 

GM says it has corrected the manufacturing process blamed in the lawsuit for causing rod-bearing damage created by sediment on the connecting rods and in the crankshaft oil galleries in certain 2021-2024 vehicles, leading to a loss of propulsion that could become a safety hazard and sometimes requires the installation of a new engine.

 

Is this the real problem? Some articles say it's a crankshaft out of spec, some say it's the way the crank sits in the block, and now this. But, is there even such a thing as an oil "gallery"? Did they mean "galley", or do they just plain don't know what they're talking about?

The tickets we have haven't been closed, so no idea on any warranty yet beyond their factory warranty, if any.  Waiting on the new oil caps.

 

As for the test, there is a knock sensor on a harness that attaches to the Pico.  The sensor side is bolted to the block.  The test has the engine run at 2000rpm and then you start to record the data.  Its using the sensor as a microphone and listening for some certain decibel range it seems.  The 3 that passed on the 4 main data points were in the 50-68dB range during recording at 2000rpm.  Two of the three were a bit quieter staying in the 50-57dB range, one was in the 60-67dB range.  The file from that gets uploaded to a test in GM SPS (service programming) and the test analyzes the data and pass or fails.  

 

So there has to be some sort of decibel range they know of for good engines, and then bad engines.  The analyzer they have set up must read that data and determines if its in spec.

Bearing speed is important ,as is heat. Rod side clearance is very important as too tight, on the pair, will not let the oil out fast enough to cool the bearings. Out of dimension stuff on the internet is BS. That stuff wouldn`t last the PDI road trip.

And there it is.  N252494003 Special Coverage.  10 year/150,000mi extended coverage on 6.2s for affected VINs under N252494000, N252494001 and N252494002 recalls.

So if you have/are shopping for a used 2021 for example, that 10 years starts from the warranty in service date (just like it always has for all special coverages).  So if the warranty in service on a 2021 was 1/1/2021, that special coverage applies from 1/1/2021 to 1/1/2031 or 150,000mi, whichever comes first.

Thanks for attaching the bulletin. Would you be able to also share what it says in the referred publication pertaining to Courtesy Transportation? Specifically, I'd like to know if they are providing like vehicles, and at what point? For example, does the Courtesy Transportation vehicle get supplied when we bring it in for the recall service, or only when an an engine is determined to need to be replaced? And, will they provide a truck?

I'd imagine its just if the customer needs a loaner and one can be provided, then it will be provided.  So its all going to depend on if there are loaners available at your dealer.  

 

And no.  No guarantees as to what kind of vehicle you get.

I asked because the bulletin specifically states that owners within the original warranty period will receive courtesy transportation, and refers dealers to read another publication, which is what I was hoping you might be able to do and share what that publication officially states so we all know for sure.

That "publication" is GM's parts and service operating policies and procedures manual.  Its all got to do with rules/regulations for service and parts.  The "Courtesy Transportation" section is about GM reimbursing dealers for warranty repairs for using their loaner fleet and has no relevance to the consumer.  So ignore that line in the recall as it does NOT pertain to customers.

 

If a customer wants/needs a loaner for having these recalls done, its all based on your dealer.  Do they have loaner inventory?  Do you really NEED one and can just drop off and get a ride/have a spare car?  Does the dealer not have any available at the moment?  Etc.
