I just changed my oil, 2008, 5.3. Put 6 quarts, and the oil is showing about 1/4" over full. Could the stick be the wrong length?? Any other suggestions?? The stick part number is 12610053

Did u run the motor first, and did u change the filter? Believe it or not some ppl dont do either.

Yes to both questions. It is weird... In fact I changed it a couple of days ago, it has been sitting for a day, have not driven it today, and just checked it, still showing over...

I can't decide if I should drain some out??

I think you should be just fine as is.

Mine does the same thing. It has been above full since the first oil change (when I added the OEM filter and specified amount of oil to it.). Nothing to worry over. It would have to be way overfull to cause any real issues.

Same here, came from GM that way, 99' 5.3 did the same

I wouldn't worry about it

I had thought about ordering another stick, maybe the one I have is the incorrect length?? I will just drain some out. Next time I change it, I will put 5.8 quarts.

Just put 6 in and don't worry about it. There are far more important things to worry about like decals in windows.

Heck yeah!

When you change oil in an engine, it is impossible to get every last drop out before you refill. Too many little places in the block and head castings that hold tiny pools of oil. The small amount that it is over is a result of this. The capacity of a DRY engine is 6.0 with a filter. It won't hurt anything but if it bothers you I'd suggest leaving about 1/4 quart out of the next refill.

Enjoy!

EDIT: LOL! I said 1.4 quarts when I meant 1/4 quart. Slight difference! :D

+1

If you completely drained it and replaced the filter and added 6 qts, you have the right amount in there, regardless of what your dipstick says.

Leave it alone!

IMO, i'd rather have a half quart too much than a half quart too little... therefore i wouldnt drain any out; especially since the owners manual calls for 6 quarts with a filter change, therefore you probably have the right amount in there anyway and are somehow getting a false reading on the dipstick---- i trust the owners manual recommendations over some flimsy piece of metal that, as you said, may have been made incorrectly.

My 02 Yuk XL will read about 1/8" over full if I put a full 6 qts in after a change. I did discover something though, if you let it drain until it is simply a drip every now and then, it will not show over nearly as much. Like Jim said earlier, it is impossible to get all of the oil out.

I short fill mine by 12 ozs each time I change it. It puts it dead on the full mark on the stick. Contrary to what some believe, I would rather have it filled a little short than over. I cannot speak for the clearance between the crankshaft and the oil in the 5.3 but in some engines there is not much clearance there. The last thing you want is the crank "whipping" air into the oil.

Re-mark the stick and be done with it.

Overfilling, getting air into the oil can be bad. I really doubt the 1/4 of a quart is any issue. But, like C & A s Dad said, just short it a little and be done with it. Oh, and make sure the oil is warm - run it till hot and let it cool some - the oil will be the last thing to really cool down, and will drain much better.

I don't recommend remarking the dipstick. How much oil remains depends on how much drained out & how long you let it drain.
