Review: Sylvania Silverstar/ZEVO LED Exterior Lighting Upgrade Zane Merva Executive Editor, GM-Trucks.com 9/14/15 Are you looking for more visibility and a distinctive look for your vehicle when the sun goes down? We installed replacement SilverStar headlight bulbs to see better at night and ZEVO LED marker bulbs to give Project Sierra a high tech look. Here’s how it went. We only publish our honest opinions and give no consideration for the gratis product. What are they? Replacement headlight and marker light bulbs that shine brighter and with a whiter color temperature than stock. The LED bulbs will also never need replaced. Tested On 2011 GMC Sierra All-Terrain Extended Cab SLT SilverStar zXe Headlight Bulbs The SilverStar zXe bulbs are Sylvania’s premium headlight bulbs. Sold in pairs, our Sierra takes H11 for the low beams and 9005 type bulbs for the high beams. SilverStar zXe bulbs are supposed to be the brightest whitest and most "Xenon like" bulbs that Sylvania offers. They provide the bright daylight colored light closer in the spectrum to HID systems without going over the top and having a fake blue tint that only serves to annoy oncoming traffic. Updated: Sylvania has clarified to us that the SilverStar Ultra is the brightest downroad bulb, while zXe bulbs have the highest/whitest color temperature. Installation is as easy as replacing any other headlight bulb. We had the best results on our 2011 using small hands and removing the air filter assembly. ZEVO LED Marker Bulbs Our trucks have around a half dozen mini-bulbs used around the exterior as marker lights. In some new vehicles, these bulbs are now LED. LED's bulbs are brighter, have a high-tech look, and never burn out. Our Sierra came from the factory with 194-sized incandescent marker bulbs that give off a dim yellow light. Even the rear license plate lighting used two of these little outdated bulbs. Thankfully replacing all of them is very easy. Our truck has two 194 bulbs in the headlights, two in the tail lights, and two to illuminate the rear plate at night. We started in the rear and removed the tail light housings using a Phillips head screwdriver. The license plate bulb housings pop out by squeezing a few tabs located behind the bumper. The four bulbs in the rear took under 15 minutes to swap out. The headlight marker bulbs are slightly harder to get to. They reside on the side of the headlight housing, tucked tightly in the front fenders. We used a pair of needle nose pliers to very carefully remove and replace the bulbs up front. Stock vs Sylvania The stock headlight bulbs (left in each photo) vs the SilverStar zXe bulbs (right in each photo). The Sylvania bulbs have a blue tint that can only be seen during the day. That blue tint on the bulbs translates to a slight blue hue in the headlight housing during the day. At night the blue tint isn't apparent. The stock 194 marker light and license plate bulbs are light and fragile. The ZEVO led replacements are sturdy and feel heavier duty. The right/driver side headlight is still stock. The left/passenger side is a SilverStar zXe bulb. The stock halogen bulb light looks yellow and dimmer in comparison. Replacing the 194 marker light bulb in each tail light is a quick job. The reward is a significantly brighter 6000k white light. Stock on left, ZEVO LED on right. The LED bulbs are so much brighter that you can see the light spilling over into the lower part of the taillight. At first we thought this might be a problem but ending up deciding we liked the more aftermarket look it gave our truck. Up close, it's even more obvious that the rear tail lamps benefit from the brighter ZEVO LED bulbs. The stock marker lights are almost unnoticeable. The LED bulbs are unmistakable. The result is the most dramatic when illuminating the rear license plate. The stock 194 bulb(left photo) is yellow and dim. The Sylvania ZEVO LED bulb is much brighter and gives the exterior a better overall appearance. Side by side, it's easy to see the ZEVO LED bulb (left) is a big upgrade in brightness from the stock bulb(right). Since LED's never burn out, you'll most likely never have to replace them again. Conclusion We replaced 10 bulbs on our 2011 Sierra during this lighting makeover. We began enjoying the results the first night and we noticed the difference immediately. Just by looking at the photos above, we’re sure you can too, and that says a lot considering it is very hard to photograph the lights in a way that accurately represents them in real life. The biggest reason that someone would want to buy SilverStar zXe bulbs is for the exterior look they give your vehicle. Sure, the whiter color temperature light is easier on the eyes when driving at night. We'd even go as far to say that we could see the road better because of this. However, in our test, there was not much discernible difference in overall brightness over stock. After all, they both use the same wattage and the same reflective housing. Sylvania offers the SilverStar Ultra line of bulbs for enthusiasts who value brightness over color temperature. In other words, don't expect this upgrade to be as bright as a HID upgrade which adds extra power to the lights. Where SilverStar zXe bulbs really "shine" is that from outside a vehicle, the headlights have a very crisp, almost HID like appearance. The ZEVO LED 194 bulbs are similar in nature. Completely hidden to the driver, LED marker bulbs are great because they will never burn out and they look better and brighter than stock. However, with that said, the brighter corner marker lighting really stands out and we've fallen in love with the modern look. We are looking forward to expanding our exterior makeover to LED tail light and backup bulbs someday in the future. Right now Sylvania doesn't make a set of LED brake light bulbs that are street legal for our Sierra but promises a solution. On the other hand, Sylvania does have backup light bulbs that fit and we're testing them now. We're also excited to share our thoughts of the ZEVO LED Pixelated DRL with you soon.

Manufacturer: Air Lift Company What it is: The RideControl kit from Air Lift is an adjustable air bag system used to keep your pickup’s suspension level while towing and more comfortable when unloaded. Using a compressor and wireless remote, air pressure is adjusted from 5psi up to 100psi, allowing the driver to level their vehicle for various loads or situations. With a level suspension, towing a trailer is easier on your truck, more stable on the road, and safer for you and your cargo. In fact, we bet many of you purchased your truck with towing in mind. However, if you tow more than a couple thousand pounds with a light duty truck on a regular basis you’ll probably get an idea why the pros use 2500HD and 3500HD pickups. However, most of us don’t have a need for a heavy duty truck and are only towing on occasion. While it’s true that our trucks are built for the purpose of hauling stuff around, most of the time they dutifully serve as personal transporters and elaborate grocery getters. GM knows this and as a result, our 1500 Silverado and Sierra pickups are tuned to be comfortable first and to perform while towing and hauling second. That means our trucks suffer from less than desirable traits in both situations. We all know how easily a truck’s rear end bounces around while unloaded. On the flip side, rear end squat is a serious issue when a light duty pickup is pushed to its rated limits. When a truck is pushed to it’s limits and the rear suspension bottoms out you inhibit the shocks ability to dampen bumps. Added weight in the rear also has the effect of lifting up the front end. This wreaks havoc on your steering, tire wear, maneuverability, and most importantly... safety. This is where AirLift comes in. The RideControl system is an aftermarket airbag system used to support your truck’s suspension. Inserted between the rear axle and frame, parallel to your existing shocks, the system adjusts its internal pressure to add support only when your vehicle needs it. We were interested in Airlift’s RideControl system, so we installed one on Project Sierra. Here’s how it went and what we thought. Installing the RideControl and WirelessOne: Installing the RideControl is a task that is entirely possible to do in your driveway with a set of ramps or jack stands. With that said, this is not a beginner project and if you’re not entirely comfortable digging into your truck and running wires, we’d suggest having a professional complete the task. While we won’t go over the entire process, installing the RideControl breaks down into a few easy steps. First we removed the rear tires, the rear inner wheel well liners, and the rear spare tire. Then we mounted the brackets to the frame and leaf spring along with a deflated airbag. The next step is to run your airlines. Both bags will be connected to the same compressor. We ran the lines from each airbag to a ‘T’, which in turn had another ‘T’. One end of the hose will be run to the air compressor while the other is tucked behind the rear bumper and equipped with a schrader valve for emergency manual inflation. We then carefully cut the inner wheel well liner to fit the mounting bracket and reinstalled it. We then installed the air compressor and controller manifold under our spare tire. We chose this location because it was protected and far enough away we cannot hear the compressor running from inside the cabin. Lastly, we ran the wiring harness to the engine compartment and connected it to a keyed power source. After we confirmed the system inflated the airbags and none of our lines leaked, we reattached the wheels and buttoned the project up. A smooth ride, all the time After installation, we couldn’t wait to test our new air suspension. As we accelerated out of the shop we could immediately feel a distinct difference in the way the Sierra handled. With our Sierra unloaded we got to work testing every available air pressure setting we could. The system has a minimum pressure of 5psi and should never be driven completely deflated. Conversely, the compressor has a maximum setting of 100psi, for when you’re taking your vehicle to its limit. We found that the RideControl system significantly changed the unloaded driving behaviour of our Sierra for the better when set to between 5psi and 10psi. The air bags helped our truck’s suspension soak up bumps and settled down axle bounce at the same time. The result was a vehicle that drove with less flex, more composure, and was more comfortable than stock. We then hooked up a dual axle 12-foot enclosed trailer stuffed with an ATV and its related equipment. This combination weighed approximately 2,500lbs. After increasing the pressure in the airbags until the truck and trailer were level we set out to see how this combination handled. With a trailer hitched up in our rear view mirror, the RideControl system shined. We immediately noticed how level our Sierra sat, even with the extra weight in the back. This level position preserved the correct steering angle of the front end, brake distribution, and helped reduce drive line shock during transitions from acceleration to braking. In general, our Sierra acted as if it was given a huge confidence boost.The AirLift system stiffened our Sierra’s suspension and added new found stability and capability to our last generation truck. Worth noting, however, is when we went to take video of the airbags operating, the unit stopped working. We couldn’t figure out why, and since the remote still lit up we assumed it was functioning correctly. After checking everything else, we decided to replace the remote's batteries, and voila, everything came back to life. Because of this, we highly recommend keeping a spare set of batteries to avoid any mid tow remote battery failures. Conclusion Not just for towing, Airlift’s RideControl Airbag System improves our Sierra’s ride and handling every time we get behind the wheel. Before installation we were dubious that this product would provide any measurable benefit beyond substantial towing and hauling. We were wrong. While we love the added stability while towing a fully loaded trailer, we really appreciate the added stiffness the RideControl system adds to our trucks rear suspension when running errands or driving to work. Our rear axle dances less on washboard dirt roads and sucks up potholes better than before. And with the new K2 trucks sharing much of the same chassis design as our 2011, they too would benefit from this serious upgrade. If you tow more than a few times a year and don’t want to compromise your truck’s everyday driving ability, then the ride control system from AirLift is just what the doctor ordered.

The affected models include BFGoodrich's line of Commercial T/A All-Season, Commercial T/A All-Season 2, and Rugged Terrain T/A tires. The company is letting consumers know that the bead area of the tire may experience a rapid failure, resulting in complete loss of tire pressure. As you could imagine, losing all of your tire's air-pressure without warning usually results in a crash. Consumers who are using these recalled tires are asked to return to the shop where they were installed to receive absolutely free replacements. The main highlight of this new model is the all new ProStar Turbo engine. It was developed for performance applications and features forged pistons, an upgraded firing order, forged crankshaft, high strength connecting rods, sodium filled exhaust valves, and a new oil lubrication system. To control all of the heat generated by a turbocharged engine, an all new cooling system also comes to RZR Turbo. A new engine management system is updated to include knock detection, boost control, and a high-flow return style fuel pump. Of course, with a more powerful engine, Polaris has also updated the drivetrain. An all new PVT system features new clutches and belt. Reverse is now geared and internal shafts have been upgraded. A dedicated high performance all wheel drive system helps drive connect the engine to the ground. The RZR Turbo EPS also features bigger coil-over springs and FOX Podium Internal Bypass Shocks. A longer wheelbase and a 3-link trailing arm suspension is geared for big jumps and rolling whoops. The side by side comes equipped with Maxxis Bighorn tires. An all new seat angle for all RZR models positions the driver closer to the steering wheel. A 660-watt charging system offers enough power for any accessory you can think up, including over 145 official Polaris Accessories. Among the most interesting data is the official horsepower and torque figures for the engines, the estimated cost increase over the other models, and that the engine will only be available in crew cab configurations in LT and Z71 trim. The new engine will come paired to a Hydra-Matic 6L50 automatic six-speed transmission and comes with a special "centrifugal pendulum vibration absorber (CPVA) in the torque converter. Equipped pickups will also come standard with a Z82 trailering package, integrated electronic brake controller, a G80 automatic locking rear differential, and a 3:42 rear axle. The 2016 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon with the 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel will go on sale this fall. GM claims it is the cleanest diesel engine ever produced by the company. During the month of June, which included 25 selling days, the company as a whole sold 259,353 vehicles in the US. That's down 3.0% from last June but up 3.4% year over year. A large chunk of those lost sales comes from a lagging fleet market. Rental company sales were down considerably, but purposefully, according to the company. Strong sales by the Buick Encore (up 33.4% vs last June), Cadillac SRX (up 23.5% over last June), Silverado (up 18.4% in June and 14.6% YOY) and Sierra (up 20.8% in June and 8.2% YOY) helped fill the gaps left by weak sales in other areas. The Chevrolet Impala (down 41.5% in June), Cadillac CTS (down 29.4% in June and 39.5% YOY) are among the biggest sales losers. Surprisingly, the new Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon XL are also lagging, down 44%, 54%, and 22.3% respectively compared to last June. Takata has issued an equipment recall for the SPI passenger airbag inflators that were installed as original equipment on the 2007 and 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 heavy duty and GMC Sierra 2500/3500 heavy duty models only. According to information provided to NHTSA by Takata, there is a risk that, in a crash, these passenger air bag inflators could deploy too forcefully, causing the inflator to rupture and increase the risk of air bag inflation injuries. Q2. What is the cause? A2. The principal root cause is still under investigation by Takata, which has determined some aged inflators from areas of high absolute humidity and high temperatures may rupture when deployed in a crash. Evidence from airbags returned to Takata from other vehicle manufacturers indicates moisture intrusion into the inflator from high humidity, along with temperature cycling, can cause changes in the propellant, which can result in generating gas more rapidly during deployment. The increase in pressure generated by the propellant with this condition may exceed the design tolerance of the inflator chamber, which may cause the inflator assembly to fragment during air bag deployment in a crash. Q3. Are the vehicles safe to drive? A3. GM is complying with Takata’s equipment recall announcement. GM is aware of no incidents to date of humidity-related inflator ruptures in any GM vehicles in the field. Q4. When were the vehicles built? A4. December 2006 to August 2008 Q5. What does the repair involve and how long will it take? A5. NHTSA will be coordinating an industry-wide, national remedy program based on priority and relative risk. When parts are available, the repair should take less than an hour. Dealers will replace the existing passenger airbag inflator with a new inflator. Q6. How will I know if my vehicle has this issue? A6. Customers will receive a letter when replacement parts are available. In the meantime, owners can look on the Safercar.gov (NHTSA) website and check to see if their VIN is included. Owners can also go to the GM recall center website and check their VIN to see if it has an open recall (https://my.gm.com/na-gm/recalls) Q7. Will I be provided a rental/loaner vehicle while my vehicle is being repaired? A7. Please work with your dealer for specific questions or concerns you may have. Q8. Is this a regional or national recall? A8. This is a national recall for the 2007 and 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 heavy duty models only and GMC Sierra 2500/3500 heavy duty models only. Apple's CarPlay and Google's Android Auto is software that allows certain functions and apps from a driver's smartphone to be projected and controlled from a vehicle's in dash infotainment system. Both of Chevrolet's infotainment systems will work with CarPlay and Android Auto for 2016. The 7-inch system will work with both standards at the start of production while Chevrolet will offer owners of the 8-inch systems the ability to upgrade later in the year. The 8-inch system will only be compatible with CarPlay at the start of production and will gain Android Auto compatibility with the update. Unfortunately for current owners, 2015 and earlier system cannot be upgraded and will never work with CarPlay and Android Auto. That said, don't worry. We'd have to imagine that aftermarket upgrade options will be in hot demand for this new bit of tech. We also expect a similar announcement from GMC in the near future. Chevrolet also confirmed that the Bolt will be developed with two goals in mind. A 200-mile all-electric range and a $30,000 price tag. While the production vehicle will share the concept's name, don't expect them to look exactly the same. The production version will most likely undergo some styling and functional changes before it goes on sale. The Bolt will be produced Michigan at the Orion Assembly facility. The company simultaneously announced a $200-million investment to get ready for Bolt production. Orion will receive $160-million for tooling and equipment while Pontiac Metal Center Facilities will receive $40-million for new dies. The Bolt will be produced at the same facility that currently produces the Buick Verano and Chevrolet Spark Chevrolet has not yet announced a model year or on sale target for the Bolt. General Motors Says Leveraging the industry-leading battery technology found in the Chevrolet Volt and Spark EV, the Bolt EV concept was developed as a game-changing, long-range pure electric for all 50 states, designed to offer more than a GM-estimated 200 miles of range at a target price of around $30,000.
