Transmission Help

So I was driving my suburban on the beach this last weekend and I threw the car into drive while I was still moving backwards. This in turn tore up the rear differential puncturing the back access panel. Well I couldn't get the car to move at all in any gear. We towed it off the beach and once it was on pavement I pulled the driveshaft off to see if maybe I could move it around in 4 wheel ( I was about 100 miles from home and didn't want to pay for a tow to get my truck home). Well taking the drive shaft off didn't help. It seems that none of my gears will engage, including park. It's as if it's in neutral. When I shift into park though it does make a grinding/scratching/cranking noise similar to over cranking the starter. I'm wondering what my options are. Currently my plan is to pull the transmission and get it repaired at a local shop, and as for the rear end I'm gonna try to pull one off of a car in the wrecking yard. I'm broke, and I only have two weeks to do the work myself.

Thanks,

also, when I try to engage 4wheel it seems to go in, but it's as if it's uncomfortable being in 4wheel and is very fidgety. the 4wheel light will pulsate a little bit as if not fully engaged.

How would I check the transfer case other than taking it off and taking it in?

+1,your fuse for your transmission (differential) worked and blew up as designed,

if the parking pawl does not hold the truck, you have problems and may have to have a heart to heart with yourself if the truck is worth any time and effort unless you are gonna keep the truck for awhile yet

just remember that hard parts inside a tranny cost some money, get a good estimate before giving the go ahead.

also get a price for a rebuilt from GM,they have a 3 yr warranty and the cooler gets flushed and flow rate thru the cooler checked and recorded should the dealer do it.

you'll have it the next day if the dealer does a replacement and 2 days if they rebuild it barring any parts more than overnight away

Very rarely are you going to lose everything in an auto trans at the same time. you may lose forward or reverse or park, not all together. When the rear diff went there was probably enough shock to throw the chain off in the transfer case.one way to check it is see if you can turn the rear output shaft by hand with it in park other than that, you will most likely have to pull the case apart to check it.

what would replacing the transmission fuse do for me? wont it just blow again?

He's making the point that your diff is the fuse for the transmission

Yeah, fuse. Was wondering about that. Must be a Canadian technician term ay? Where's a service adviser to explain techie gibberish when we need it.

Sounds to me like you broke the input shaft, or the planetary set.

I am with Rob (gmtech4) on this one...if your going to spend the cash, you may as well buy one new from GM and have the warranty.

here's some more info for ya. When my dad tried to rotate the universal joint on the front differential it didn't rotate the front axle.

also...WOW taking the tranny out is a beast.

The front axles will only turn via the input shaft if the actuator in the front diff is actuated (4WD selected).

Here's an update for you guys.

Seems like the transfer case is alright.

I definitely trashed the inside of my transmission so yeah that's dead lol.

I bought a used rear end from a 99 yukon that only had about 114000 miles on it and I installed that today.

Gonna try to pick up a transmission and get it installed by saturday so I can get my truck back on the road.

I swear that I have hte suckiest year for a car. I can never find parts for my year and I have had the WORST time tracking down a transmission for my car because it seems like they did in fact use a 4l60e but it's an early model but it may actually be a 4l60. ah anyways, I just hope I can get my ride running again soon.
