nothing new. these types of tools have been out for many many years. i have seen them as early as 1995 myself when i started working at a car dealership. they now have a whole slew of products to make it easy. and what's worse is you don't need any permit or business license to buy this stuff from towing/recovery suppliers.

I would NEVER let someone wedge my door to do an unlock. The door frame will bend out and never seal correctly.

 

 

Yeah one morning I locked my truck after I started it to warm it up. I had a spare in my safe but to unlock it I needed the key that was locked in my truck. :thumbs: So anyway I got to watch a cop do the same thing with those tools. I didnt seem to mess with the seal but I was worried about the same thing. This was on my 2007 ford not my Gmc.

The locksmith I called did that on my 01 Sierra. He pressed the unlock button how ever and there was NO damage to the door. $75 and I was on my way down the road.

Every wrecker company on the planet is going to do that. I work for the 3rd largest AAA provider in the state of Michigan and I know for a fact that this is the best way to get into one of these trucks. We have even had to do it on our own wreckers before. I have never once seen a door that doesn't go back to normal as long as the person doesn't wedge it so much that you can put your hand in the door. As soon as an under-trained person puts a slimjim, Z-tool or anything else in the door, there is a very good chance that it either isn't coming out or it is going to break something in the door (or even the glass of the window). The only thing that is better than this method would be an actual key cut by the dealer or keep a spare in your wallet.

It's just as easy and pretty much the same process for most vehicles. I got locked out of my Mazda not long ago. There is a lock shop where I work and it took the guy less than 5 minutes to break out the tools and have the door open. Made me wonder why lock up in the first place. Only thing a lock does is keep honest folk out.

Not really honest people aren't even going to look at you truck unless they are admiring it. Locks and alarms only slow them down and try to persuade the crappy thieves from even trying.

But really this is where onstar would shine if you locked yourself out (unlock feature), and they could shut the vehicle down and track it if it was stolen.

Same here. Plus, with the way they're wedging the door and where they're "bending" it, flexing it back into original shape is VERY easy to do if it does happen to stay out away from the seals. The window frame portion of the door is really on the flimsy side.

if that guy in the vid worked for me, i would fire his A$$.. there is no need to pound the plastic wedge that far into the door jam. all the air wedges i have owned/have are thin enough to slid in with out the wedge. also, the higher you put the air wedge to the top of the door, the less chance of springing the door. ALSO deflate the air wedge first, also helps in reducing any damage. also he took tooo long. i can get in/out in under 30 sec. on GM trucks.

i'm surprised he is advertising that stuff for sale. there not sold to the general public due to most states there considered B & E tools..breaking & entering..
