Tundra Or Sierra 6.2l

Well Im back in the market for a 1/2 ton . Ive had a 2008 tundra 5.7 4x4 for the past 2.5 years of a 3 year lease. before that I had a 2001 sierra 5.3 4x4 for 6 years. I would have kept the sierra but I destroyed it after having it for only 2 years. Frame damage, bent axle , bent rancho front lift kit ect.... Insurance fixed it ,but it was never right after that. So when my ext. waranty ran out at 100k, I bought the tundra from my work. Yep, Im a toyota tech contemplating a GMC sierra 4x4 6.2l.

 

The things I dont like about the tundra:

huge blind spots at the "A" pillars

Mirrors too far away from door

Radio too far away and not angled toward driver.

A/C takes forever to cool

fuel mileage . 12 around town and 7 towing

Fake locking rear diff. controled by brakes. Horible in sand

seat height. seems too high. Im 5'9 and I cant get the front of the seat low enough.(60/40 split bench)

The fake tilt wheel. The wheel doesnt tilt, the column moves up and down and the angle of the wheel doesnt change.

 

I like about Tundra:

huge interior. front and rear. double cab

lots of rear leg room.But no one uses it

rear doors open like front

incredible performance when towing or driving crazy. out performs 01 GMC

excelent braking.Way better than my 01 gmc

being able to park on the lot ,Blends in with all the tundras in for service.

 

What turned me off from the vortech max sierra in 08 was that I though they got around 9-10 mpg all the time, city towing and HWY.

am I wrong ? how is the 6.2 4x4 on mpg?

 

What are the thoughts of anyone that has switched from tundra to Gmc or silverado.

Talk me into the GMC.

I also think the Sierra looks better than the Tundra. and now the GMC has 100k waranty

I was between the Tundra and Sierra..

 

In the end, I went with the Sierra. The Sierra was only 5k more because I got a great deal...

 

Things I liked about the Sierra:

It looked better

It felt more solid

There's no comparison on the interior

Sierra won't suddenly accelerate on you like a Toyota.Better resale on the Sierra as Toyota resale is in the crapper,Sierra looks 10X better[thats personal pref]New sierra has a 6spd tranny so fuel mileage is improved.Awsome warranty,5yr roadside ass, 1 yr onstar

City driving in the 6.2 gets me around 12 mpg. Now that it has around 2600 miles on it, the last tank avg (city) 13.3 mpg according to the computer. If you're going to get a half ton and comparing it to the Tundra, get the 6.2l .

My Vmax gets 15-18mpg consistently and towing got 9-11mpg from Pa to S. Carolina towing 6800 lbs running no less than 65 average. The 6.2 should do better

The sound with the skinny pedal on the floor.

 

Drive a Sierra with the 6.2 and pretend it is shifting life the Toy. Then buy the Sierra and get a Black Bear tune and it really will!

I get 12 around town mainly in my 6.2. But I also Run E85 it goes up to about 14 around town with premium gas (suggested to run). Highway I get 15-16 with E85 (that is basically all I have run)

 

My 2000 with the 5.3 regularly got 12-13 running regular gas so overall the 6.2 gets better milage than my old truck.

Plus, the Sierra/Silverado 4wd system is awesome and will completely blows the Tundra away.

2010 CC 4x4 here

 

Just rolled 2600 miles

 

Best tank all highway = 18.6 mpg @ 70mph

= 17.4 mpg @ 75mph

 

Best tank city/hwy mix 50/50 = 13/14 mpg

 

I set the cruise on hwy, and keep foot in it in the city.

 

So far, I am impressed considering my 07 5.3 & 4spd w/ same setup never got more than 18mpg hwy over the 45000 mi I drove it.

 

Get the 6.2, you won't regret it!

You really ask such a question on a GM truck forum? Uh...take the ford...Really, buy what you like...the rising sun truck looks ugly to me...inside is bare...that said the old ones were good ...not sure about the San Antonio specials..I never even considered the rising sun...Gm or Ford...GMC won that short battle...

7 towing, I had 4 quads on a trailer and one stuffed in the box, four dudes in the truck and driving 75 to 80 and got 12 with my 6.2. I get 16 unloaded and 13 in town going as fast as I can between lights. Drive a 6.2 and you wont want to take it back to the dealer. When you push that pedal to the floor and you feel your back sink into the seat youll want one too.

I haven't driven the GM 6.2/6-spd, but I've driven the Tundra 5.7/6-spd numerous times. Really, it depends on what you like best. I bought a GMC Sierra 4x4 5.3/4-spd in 2008 *instead* of the Tundra w/ the 5.7/6-spd. I tested both a *lot*. I never felt "good" driving the Tundra. It has awesome power, but otherwise... it felt more like our Sienna minivan than a truck to me. I would drive them back to back, and picked the GMC every time. Personal preference, but here's a quick list:

 

Sierra:

- Solid on center steering

- Gauges and dash (personal pref maybe, but I don't care for the "tubes" and painted dash in the Tundra)

- Much better stock sound system in every trim level

- Auto-4wd and locking diff (excellent)

- Ride is more "compliant" and "solid" to me (may be the boxed frame?)

- Better sheet metal (by my feel)

- Actual metal on the bed rails and in the rear wheel wells

- Real tailgate

- Best looking truck

- Excellent warranty (and excellent local service)

- Relatively inexpensive parts/repairs (Toyota is nuts on this one)

- Doors close "solid" and are "heavy"

- Crew cab has better cab/bed dimensions (by my taste) than the crewmax

 

Tundra

- 5.7/6-spd available in multiple trims on the lot every day (not special order)

- Lots of interior storage

- Roll down rear window on the crewmax

- Standard 4-wheel disc (although, they use a Chinese system I think?). GM/6.2 comes with 4-wheel disc and GM 14 bolt 9.5 SF axle.

- Toyota plastics and switches seem a little better quality to me (mirrors and such)

- Built in the South (hey, gotta support my brethren)

- All four doors swing forward (d-cab and crewmax). I'm not a fan of suicide doors, so this would be a big one for me if comparing the GM Ext cab. While the crewmax is huge inside, it just doesn't look right to me, and the GM crew has ~3 more inches of bed.

 

Looks (interior and out) are subjective, so that's personal taste. You really can't compare the 5.3/6-spd to either of these for power, but I personally think the 5.3 is the best all-round motor available (economy vs power). I routinely get 16+ mpg around town, and 19+ highway w/ the 5.3.

Why anyone would even remotely consider a Toyota anymore is just beyond me....

 

I suppose the buyer just gets what they deserve if they make that mistake.
