Hd Shoot Out

Cliff's notes:

Ford 6.2 was quicker than hemi and vortec in all towing tests but the hemi was the fastest unloaded. Ford got 1st in the HD gas shootout.

Duramax and Powerstroke were fairly close in all contests with the Duramax typically leading by a small amount of time in all unloaded and loaded tests. It also managed the best unloaded mpg.(statements are true for 2500 and 3500 tests) They also said that the GM trucks had the new benchmark for chassis and steering while criticizing their interiors for a lack of gizmos, materials, and fit and finish compared to the other two. GM trucks took both the 3/4 and 1 ton diesel wins based on the scoring by pickuptrucks.com.

I test drove both the diesel and the gasser on Friday, and there is definitely a huge steering and ride improvement. The duramax is a monster, but GM needs to up the ante and start stuffing the 6.2L in the HD's. The 6.0 seems lacking, when trying to move around a 7500lb crew cab 3500 (only one they had on the lot). The fully boxed, hydroformed frames are visibly shorter and the springs and torsion bars are visibly beefier. I do agree, the interior needs a refresh and more options. Also noticed that god awful urea tank is anchored like a saddle bag on the outside of the frame just below the passenger side door.

BTW Ford makes a 400 HP/ 800 Ft-lb Powerstroke?

Local dealer just got a 2011 HD Denali Duramax on Sat. I was looking at it and the truck sits high and that should appeal to some buyers. It had a sticker of $58,006.00 Nice truck in all black. Its appears to be a stock unit as its sitting out in front this am and when I went by there was a couple driving a Ford looking it over closely.

Ford re-flashed the computer on all new production 2011's. The 2011's already out there on the streets can take their truck in to get the new re-flash on the computer. Pickuptrucks.com asked for the V2.0 Powerstroke but Ford declined to deliver. Mike Levine at PUTC.com said it wouldn't have mattered, GM still would've won.

Supposedly all GM gas engines will be replaced in the coming years with direct injected engines, probably at the next re-design (2013-2014).

It's been said over and over that the current 6.2L is not heavy duty enough for HD truck applications.

Rumor is the HD gas engine will be the direct injected 7.0L....we'll see.

I am happy with mine and don't feel that an extra 20 or 30 horses would make any big difference,That is for what i use my truck for I will never need to max out all it's towing capacity or have any need for more horses. Plus the 6.0 litre can take a hell of a beating and is a great engine that is hard to kill...

Having said that a lot of people just want bragging rights and I'm fine with that!!!

The dealer had a loaded K2500HD crew cab in their lot when I was by yesterday. I saw the same thing. Not really protected IMO. No skid plate & I wonder how they'll mount steps or running boards?

nice review, GM will step up with the gasser HP ratings. not worried about that too much, but did you look at the duramax SRW and duallie difference in 1/4 mile times....the dually was faster????? the truck weighed more and its a duallie. i dont get it....you'd think a truck that weighed more and has two extra wheels would be significantly slower but i guess not.

Dually had more tires on the ground and more significantly...no traction control. That is no doubt why there was such a difference.

cliff notes for us mobile users?

GM has a superior diesel, ride, frame, handling, and braking

Ford's "brand new" 6.2 left them underwhelmed.

Dodge won nothing.

what I don't get is why in the previous HD shootout the 6.0L dominated the gassers. In this test its 0-60 time was more than 2.0 seconds slower, along with the other tests, if you use 2007's numbers the 6.0L is still the best in 2011. I guess the extra 300lbs. made the difference or it just goes to show you that not all motors run the same even though they are built exactly the same. You could have 10 6.0L sitting in your driveway and after awhile you could tell us which ones are the bulls and which one is the dog. What I mean is that I think the gasser that chevy sent was a pooch. Atleast that's what I'm blaming it on.

Another interesting bit of information regarding the 6.0L Gas in this 2011 shootout. I looked up the rear differential ratio on the 2011 2500HD 6.0L and it is only 3.73. In the article they list it as a 4.10. Not sure if they had a special order, but I doubt it. They makes a pretty large difference when Ford has there 6.2 mated to a 6 speed automatic with similar gearing to the GM six speed automatic, yet it is a 4.30 rear differential. I think even though the GM 6.0L has less power/torque, I think had the GM had a 4.10 rear differential ratio or if you could get a 4.30 rear differential ratio, it might have faired much different in this competition. Anyways just my thoughts.

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.
    • How about them NICKS!!!
    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
